Yeah I've touched on this aspect before, especially in the generations that were here when this new avenue of celebrityship really took off in society. There's so much wariness about "fakers" and such, people seeing people get "outed" due to controversy, that in a way, it makes people widely cautious about figures, always wondering and suspecting if every persona who comes along is "just another A-hole waiting to be revealed". And then that defensive cautiousness doesn't want to be surprised so it starts to just default assume that everyone is an A-hole waiting to be outed. It's unfortunate and sad.

Yeah it's the "egg on the roof" idea. If an egg is placed on the tip of a roof, it's going to either roll one way or the other, based on which way it's slightly leaning at the start. If someone's interpretations of a person are overall positive, then they will bias favorably all other actions and statements of that person. But as soon as the overall opinion becomes negative, suddenly all those previously favorable interpretations become negative. Thus you don't really see minor swings from slightly positive to slightly negative, but rather big swings from moderately positive to moderately/highly negative, due to all those small situations and biases being flipped and swinging the scale.

This is just my personal take on it and it means nothing and I'm not trying to direct hate but the entire situation is just cringe at this point. Could thor have done more to save those characters? Yes. should he be getting hate to this extent because he didn't play perfectly? No. This is simply a situation where someone got scared to lose their character did things wrong whilst the group didn't communicate correctly resulting in two people arguing and refusing to be wrong.
