The country restriction requires them to actually make changes on the various platforms. The PSN requirement was just something they planned to enforce but haven't actually done anything to implement that yet.

Haven't been on the publishing side of things so I don't know the exact process for making those changes or how long they take.

For those wondering or argueing about EU. It basically goes like like this:

in this case you may need a seperate account (at least from steam you need an account in a non restricted country), but this works, Lost Ark had that issue, but if you made a steam account in another country you could then buy the game, funnily enough you could actually just gift it back to your regular steam account that has a purchase restriction and play just fine.

The Helldivers 2 community was tricked by Sony.

Sony declared having a PSN account would be mandatory to play Helldivers 2. The community revolted and trashed the games review score to 13% positive. Sony walked it back and stated they wouldn't be making PSN mandatory.

Yeah, I had a few chats about Steam doing the region-locking, but it's just highly unlikely.

Region-locking is easy to change for publishers.

And lately Steam has had several of the pro-consumer moves. Sony has only done anti-consumer moves

cuz Steam is literally losing their cut and fees and whatnot from refunding

but at least they're doing it, perhaps not at the quickness / rate that people want, but from what I see it seems at least well-intentioned to try and amend the situation for consumers

especially given the situation is not created by them lmao

GMG delisted GoT a day ahead of Steam, and they deal directly with game keys from the publisher. Ghost of Tsushima was also delisted on Epic Game Store for the same regions. Sony appears to be the one pushing for the region-locks. 😦

the only reason why Steam would've done it before was when the announcemtn for PSN came and it meant those countries without PSN couldn't play the game. So it was a logical argument to think that Steam could've region-locked to prevent future refunds

but even if it was logical at the time, Sony's actions have made it clear that they are the most likely ones.

Because they don't want to expend the effort in dealing with that region, or they don't want to translate into the local language, or they consider it not worth their time, or because they have prejudice against that area. There's multiple reasons.

But you see, Sony, to grab a quick and topical example, just wants to artificially inflate it's PSN customers.

By making the game only available in that area, they increase the Steam customer to PSN customer ratio artificially.

I suspect it's a numbers manipulation game. They're running a scam on the stockholders, I suspect.

By removing those regions, they decrease the number of Steam customers, but crucially, they don't impact the number of PSN customers.

Thus artificially increasing it's ratio, so they can then say 'The ratio of PSN customers has gone up!'
