I noticed this before but thought it was intended until I got the new ship, and logically it makes sense this is a mistake
The Shrikes don't consume fuel to go backwards and you can just get to basically full speed going backwards with them

ahhh ok, ty, its odd as sometimes the lancer uses fuel to slow down but not all the time
