If I had to hazard a guess, Kronika is probably alive because she was ‘erased’ by Shang Tsung in the rehashed events of Aftermath, which overwrites her being vitrified and shattered by Liu Kang where he definitively killed her.
You can’t just erase a time god from time. So in a way, Shang Tsung may have indirectly brought her back to life.

Apparently shujinko was originally supposed to be Shang tsung assist but they found it significantly faster to develope shukinko as he doesn’t transform. Hence the similarities
