#Revert Classic "Vote" modes

To be upfront: I'm a casual fan of the game who wanted to relive my teenage years of playing Warcraft 3 custom maps. I think the devs have done a tremendous job restoring what was one of my favorite tower defense maps.

That said, I'm quite busy these days being an adult - work, life, and all the other usual excuses. I've avoided the ranked 2v2 mode specifically because I don't want to "drag down my teammate" by just wanting to be lazy and casual my way through some games while listening to music and killing the night. 4v4 Classical filled this niche perfectly.

The new "Vote" mode, to put it plainly, is not really a change I enjoy for the very reason that I'm forced into something I don't want to do. Every game I start up is pretty much a gamble of ~45 minutes of being forced into a game mode I may not want to play or enjoy. I'd gladly opt out but currently, there's no other means to play this game other than vs. AI or 2v2 Ranked.

While I'd put forth the suggestion that we allow additional "custom" game modes, I think that we don't have the player bandwidth to support splitting the community so much. I just don't like how Classical has turned from a casual game experience where every game I could decide what I wanted to do into what it is now: being forced into a playstyle you may not want to do but you were merely "out-voted". This wasn't a problem prior to this change.

One side note I'd like to mention: one complaint I've read constantly about is how "Autosend" is ruining the game by letting people not be so engaged with the game. I sort-of disagreed with this because I liked utilizing Autosend, especially on the first 10 waves. However, this new "Auto & Chill" mode seems to have made any perceivable problem worse. I just got out of a game where no one on my team wanted to send even onto wave 26. I suppose they were meme-ing, but it made for a less-than-enjoyable experience when my teammates are even goaded by the game mode to not even try.

I really don't even want to play the game anymore. I don't want to play Ranked, vs. AI gets old after a while, and Classical has turned into a gamble of whether or not I'm going to be forced to play something I don't want to. My best suggestion is to create a third game category with a "Game browser" where people can play these wacky modes, or even do a "Flavor of the week" akin to the weekly challenge. However, in my eyes currently: Classical was just removed as a possible play mode for me.

4s is a chill game mode that is still going through its discovery phase. Auto and chill is viable no matter which mode is selected. This is the first flavor of the week options being added, let's try to help it iterate before just hitting the breaks.

Nostalgia is great but games do need to continue to iterate. I'm excited by the exploration the devs are doing.

It's not necessarily about the "quality" of the game modes but rather the fact you're "forced" into them. I just want a casual, almost predictable experience. I'm trying all the modes out, but ultimately, it is just the fact you're "forced". I just tried out the expedited building phase and it's simply not enjoyable for me, and while I did vote on it to try it, the votes were overwhelming and I would've lost even if I said "No"

#

Like I said in my original post: I have no game mode where I can just casually relax and play a predictable, fun game

#

I had that in the original iteration of Classic 4v4, but that's gone now and there's nothing else aside from 2v2 vs. AI

#

I'm just not enjoying the game anymore

With one patch that drastically changed an entire game mode - I'm basically left on the wayside

Hi aquilaungula, sorry for that experience. Your feedback is heard.

Although Legion TD 2 is quite active for an indie game (50,000+ monthly active players), it's not enough to support 3 queues.

I think we had to do something to address the previous pain point in classic that ~50% of players wanted classic to be an income & chill experience and ~50% wanted it to be a ranked-lite mode with mythium saving.

At least now with voting, the majority (within in each game) gets what they want. Are a minority of players sometimes forced into a mode/playstyle that isn't their favorite? Yes, but that's arguably better than having half the players on your team playing one way and the other half playing a completely different way, leading to everyone getting upset.

The patch is very new, so let's give it a chance, and we'll continue to listen to feedback and evaluate. I predict after the novelty of the new modes wears off, players will vote for what they really enjoy playing (rather than just voting for the new modes because they are new), which will result in more standard classic games.

Additionally, we're willing to consider changes like:

  • Require +2 more yes-votes than no-votes (instead of +1)
  • Remove any special modes that aren't well-liked (although the good thing is that, by the nature of voting, poorly liked modes won't be enabled often).

And of course, if players overwhelmingly don’t like something, we’re always willing to revert it, but it’s important to give new features a chance and allow time for iteration/improvements first. We're definitely keeping an eye on things 🙂

Thanks for the response. I'll keep giving it more of a chance as well, I just liked being able to decide my strategy myself without being forced into it is all.

Keep up with the great work, Jules!

After a certain threshold in previous classic before voting, there was no such thing as predictable casual which to me was miserable. At least now I can vote for predictable casual and have a chance at it. And if income and chill isn’t voted for, I know what I’m getting myself into which is refreshing compared to prior where I didn’t know if it would be income and then starve past w10, or income and starve past w15 etc.

Honestly, for me, I just really like playing Fiesta, and its the reason I boot up the game and play. If i'm thinknig eh theres a 50% chance I have to play something else (lock in etc) I'd rather not play.

Happy for others to do some OP mode in the game though, its not about power

I'd like to see the abillity to opt back out of whatever the special mode is:
e.g. for double lock-in, have a "return to select" button towards the top that will let you pick a different mastermind (while giving up the advantage). It'd also mean something like "ordered chaos" would likely need to give a small bonus to incentivize staying on it (+1 income?)

I think double lock in should let you forego the lock in, it’d be a disadvantage in some sense to do it anyway, don’t see why not

Ordered Chaos is the one where it might be preferable if everyone has to do it, since that's part of the design/charm of the mode.

I could see your suggestion working too though (+1 extra income would mean most players do it, and the only ones who don't are players who really don't like Chaos). Will think about it.

Either way, with the above changes (and us taking this into consideration for new modes in the future), 95% of the time, you should get to pick your legion/mastermind of choice.

Thanks! For sure I think it should be very clear or require some extra step to back out of what the special mode was (e.g. an extra button press to switch back + heavily emphasizing whatever the mode is during select). Just an extra bit of UX to "push" people into playing the fun thing that was voted in.
