Since the last update my car sounds have changed. The cam1 engine sound is louder and abrasive.
The cam3 engine sound is muted much more than before.
Reactor sounds are either not working or they are very quiet.
I've been through all the ingame sound settings as well as all my system/device sound settings, and have not found anything that makes a difference.
This is making me crazy so any help appreciated
#Car sound has changed and reactor sound not working

Sorry if this is just the basic answer but,
this is also smth that could be Map dependent. Some maps/texture mods change the sound.
If that's not it, the first step i'd try is to validate game files via ubisoft connect or steam (or wherever you downloaded your game from) or redownload it from scratch and try it then. Game is only like 4-5Gb big, so it shouldnt take too long 🙂
Thank you for the suggestion. It does affect all maps, and I did game file validation with no problems reported. I have 2 separate installations of TM on this PC (Ubi and Steam) and the problem affects both installations.
When I watch TM streams, the engine and reactor sounds are normal. Because the game probably uses a different codec than a webstream, I did a fresh install of the k-lite codec pack but that made no difference.
what is your headset/speakers/audio devices sample rate set to?
24/192
I also tried disabling OpenPlanet (by starting TM holding Pause button) and there was no difference
thanks for the suggestion. i updated the driver for the audio device along with firmware and software updates, and now it won't go over 44.1Khz. So I'm stuck at 24/44.1 maximum for the moment.
At 44.1Khz the cam1 and cam3 engine sounds are much closer to what they should be (though still different). The reactor sound is now audible but also different.
i suspect the problem is my audio hardware/software but not sure why it would have suddenly started having a problem in this game only
the sound device and its related software are working at all sample rates now.
at 44.1KHz, things sound most normal except reactor is more muted
at each higher sample rate (48KHz-192KHz) the sound gets progressively worse.
i've played this game at 192KHz for years, so I conclude that something changed in the game (audio resources, windows audio integration, or some setting).
Default.json has "AudioGlobalQuality" : "normal", with possible values of "high", "normal", and "low".
Changing this to "high" made no difference
@dire pier did you at some point replace the OpenAL_bundled.dll the game ships with with a newer version?
the game update may have reverted that change
no, i never changed that. i have OpenAL64_bundled.dll v1.23.99 in both my installation folders
while looking at those files, i noticed OpenAL64_bundled.dll had a new date, so i checked a backup to confirm: the file was indeed updated to a new version in the Jan 1 patch
i found instructions on reddit for replacing the OpenAL64 with a download from OAL. They do have a newer version 1.24.01 but i got no sound when i tried that
i then replaced OpenAL64_bundled.dll with the version from before Jan 1 and everything sounds correct
i marked as resolved because there is a workaround.
But there must be a problem with the version of OpenAL64 that shipped in the Jan 1 update (perhaps affecting only people who use hi-res audio). I was lucky to have a backup copy of the previous version
