So there's this thing called energy, every subcategory (static for example) gets an energy score based on the highest score of the two scenarios. Master level static would be 800 energy, jade would be 700.

Overall rank is calculated using what's called harmonic mean of all the subcategories' energy scores. Harmonic mean places higher weight on lower energy scores, so overall rank will be affected more if you have a subcategory with say 2 ranks lower than overall, than it would if you had it 2 ranks higher than overall.
