Dont think stretching will solve it, take a look at this exercise 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQJYTO67UJ0

10 years ago I had chronic back issues but I can hardly remember what that's like. I don't avoid my back, I don't do treatments of any kind, I don't take supplements of any kind... I just train my body's ABILITIES. I train every surrounding muscle to my spine, and after training thousands of people I now have measurable targets for each exercise...

for some reason when im aim training after like 30 minutes my eyes get really tired/dry. eyedrops help but if i want to play for more than 30 minutes at a time i have to put eyedrops in every like 15 minutes while playing. if i aim train for like an hour my eyes will just be tired for hours like 3-4 hours before they feel fine again. this only happens when aim training btw, i can play valorant or other games for hours and be fine

I get migranes and just a dry bloodshotty feel behind my eyes when I wake up everyday unless I sleep 10+ hours

#

anything less and I feel like shit for 2 hours

only 2 hours then they all go away

after drinking water and moving around

I feel amazing before bed then boom I feel like a ten ton truck hit me the moment I open my eyes

It makes early mornings a very hard task for me and it keeps me in bed thru my alarms

I have ADHD and I'm medicated where I take the pill when I wake up I take Vyvance so it metabolizes in my body and kicks in in around an hour / hour and a half where I start feeling better. Before medication I couldn't figure out if it was the coffee that made mornings more bearable or just drinking something

#

I don't wanna be smacking down 500 mg of Tylenol every day. Can't currently contact my doctor was wondering if people have a similar problem orr if there is something I can do before bed to resolve this]

#

I'm 17 so it could be growing pains I suppose (thats what google says) my doctor said I probably have around an extra 1-2 inches to grow since I started late but I'm already 6'2 and I highly doubt that any of that is happening quickly enough to result in migranes overnight

if u think its from ur grip. coz i used to tense a lot for big flicks to get faster speed on them. so i tensed in the wrist but it affected my fingers too coz its all connected. now i try to relax as much as possible to not get tense anywhere. so if u grip it in a way that causes fatigue and/or pain then i think u should grip it lighter but watchout for tension in other body parts too

Hi, i have a question for the 1HP team :
We talk a lot about posture, stretch etc, but from a purely mechanical point of view, we are human, there must be a "range" of sensitivity (in cm) which should be optimal in order to limit the stress put on our joints and tendons as much as possible.

What is your opinion on this subject ?

# inner prawn any advice, stretches i could do

You can try doing this exercise, 15 times up and down and then turn your head to the side and repeat for both sides

The exercise uses your necks full range of motion and that should ease the stiffness as well as help build strength over time

Chin tucks are another great exercise that you can do while sitting at your computer, can repeat every couple of hours and that will help with the tension too

peak urchin
# inner prawn tysm

My pleasure bro, stay healthy 🤍

Just try to be consistent with the exercises, I’ve also dealt with back/neck pain and it can actually take a couple of weeks before you see the full effects, might even happen so that one day you don’t feel any relief, but the next one is wonderful

The clicking noise could be nitrogen bubbles bursting in your synovial fluid - synovial fluid lubricates your joints like motor oil in a car's engine, reducing friction and preserving your cartilage

I've had thumb pain for a while

since feb 2019

#

it's come and gone and has mostly been gone ever since I started working out but it's come back

#

and I suspect I know why

#

all my life I've had a hard time with making precise, fast motions without tensing my hands

#

this goes back all the way to when I was a teen playing rhythm games in the late 2000s

#

where to make my fingers go fast enough, I basically had to squeeze my arms

#

and obviously this is bad...

#

lately I've been playing FPS games again and now I have hand pain again

#

and I'm almost positive it's because I use a claw grip and squeeze my mouse when trying to make accurate shots

#

what kind of things can I do to try to train myself to not do this? I'm just messing around with some of the basic tasks in aim lab using a fingertip grip

#

focusing less on getting a good score and more on just doing the activities while paying attention to the tension in my hand

#

does anyone have further advice for trying to sort this out?

I've been looked at by doctors who weren't able to find any signs of nerve damage or arthritis or anything like that

molten badge

steelseries rival 300

and it's not that holding LMB causes discomfort in itself

#

it's that when I try to hold it down for a while, the rest of my hand seems to reflexively clench and I have a hard time unclenching it without taking my hand off the mouse

#

what kinds of things did you do to train yourself to use a more relaxed grip?

#

I'm in my early 30s now so this is a pretty old habit...

# violet swan I have a pretty odd grip for my mouse. Can anyone tell me if this is bad/unhealt...

There's a chance it could cause unnecessary pressure on the median nerve from the carpal ligament (palmar cutaneous branch) being contracted, which might increase the risk of carpal tunnel. I wouldn't recommend it, as aside from that it can also lead to minor cramping or tension, possibly decreasing performance. The best thing to do if you don't want to radically change your grip would be just resting your middle finger on the scroll wheel.

For the sake of clarity, I will say that this is not medical advice, and the best thing to do would be to talk about a professional in the area.

upbeat crystal
# proud belfry 1 - i do not exercise it at all. 2 - i have no prior injuries in this area. 3 - ...

Sorry for the late reply, but here's what I might recommend.

  1. Perform stretches to whole arm in mornings, evenings and before and after a game. The main ones to remember would be both the anterior and posterior deltoid stretch. They're easy and take little time.
  2. Try to work out regularly if possible. In your case, maybe high rows could help
  3. Eat more salty foods, although you should still be careful.
  4. Whenever seated, try to maintain a 90 degree angle at the elbow, and not have your shoulder tensed or raised

Take the necessary precautions to prevent it in the first place. There are many ergonomic products if you're really concerned, however if you aren't that worried, just make sure that your hands stay warm while gaming, you don't tense up your hand too much, and maintain a good posture

Numbness is can be a higher cause for concern, and if you've been using the grip for a longer time but didn't have the feeling before, it could be a sign of some form harm. Two of the most common things I can think of at the moment would be ulnar tunnel or carpal tunnel. If this is the case, try to answer these questions with as much detail as possible:

  1. Are you currently on any medications?
  2. Do you have any conditions that could be related to this such as diabetes, thoracic outlet syndrome, or any autoimmune diseases?
  3. What is the grip (send a picture if possible for a most accurate view)?
  4. How long has it been going on and how long have you been using this grip/mouse?
  5. What is your posture like, and what angle is your elbow approximately at when you sit?
  6. Does your elbow rest on an armrest or table, or stay in the air?

Here's what I might recommend: Take a break for a couple of days, try not to strain it. You don't wanna make it any worse, and should let it rest. Come back, and see if it continues. If it does, I'd suggest going to a professional, as some person online might not be the best for medical advice. I don't want to make any radical conclusions that could be more harmful, but the most reasonable conclusion is that it's temporary. I'd still advise caution though, because this can be a sign of ulnar tunnel or other forms of nerve damage.

yo, so i've been having some hand concern's recently:
my right hand seems to hurt a wee bit, almost feels like my hand is strained when typing. not completely, but my right hand is always less comnfortable than my left majority of the time whle working at my desk. not only that, my wirst and back of my hand feel "constricted" while my left feels more "free". whenever I rotate my wrist and move my fingers up and down, i can feel things moving in my hand and all cracks and pops are audible. there's no pain, but sometimes hand can feel a lil tired in comparison to left. right hand feels more tense

Is there a general consensus on wrist/forearm position in terms of health? I know that you want a neutral wrist as in no ulnar or radial deviation, but what about pronation/supination?

A lot of the times I see people recommending a flat wrist, but wouldn't this actually be bad? A flat wrist would be a severe pronated wrist, which should be a far more tense position with health concerns? The main reason for vertical mice is the neutral position of your forearm after all.

In that sense, does it make sense to try and tilt your forearm a little bit (less pronation), to lower the tension?

Same goes for the recommendation to have your arm close to your body. The closer it is, the more tense the pronation gets. Sure the rotator cuff can more easily function, but wouldn't a middle ground be the best, as in maybe 30° angled or something?

main cloud
main cloud
# balmy summit Is there a general consensus on wrist/forearm position in terms of health? I kno...

There's a number of competing factors that I'm aware of. In terms of pronation, there's a tradeoff between mobility and ergonomics. The more supinated your wrist is, the harder it is to use it for corrections.
"Flat" in this case tends to refer to the other directions if I'm not mistaken
As for the distance from your torso, your arm being further out induces stress on other parts like your shoulder.

The short unhelpful answer is don't tense your arm since that's within your conscious control

hollow current
# pallid shell I tense my arm a lot like it starts to hurt after about 10 minutes when running ...

Usually tensing means your putting conscious focus on your muscles. You’re actively thinking about how to move your arm and that leads you focusing on your arm and muscles then tensing.

Having an external point of focus is best. Simply focusing on the target instead of worrying about the correct movement.

Other things you can try are things that relax you before and during aim training since you might be “over tryharding” it. Doing muscle relaxation techniques before the session, relaxing music, stretches, breathing, etc.

A quick exercise before aim training will increase focus, attention and reaction time due to increasing blood to the brain and periphery.

Exercise after training will increase substances like BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) that aid in learning. BDNF release is correlated with increased intensity.

# low musk Any tips on how to deal with work going from day shift to night shift constantly...

That actually sucks. Same happens to me in hospitals with call days.

Depends on the frequency and time intervals. If it’s 100% at random then kinda screwed.

Ideally you can progressively adjust your circadian rhythm (through sleep habits) but if its random then a quick fix is sometimes using a melatonin pill (3mg) on the night before the shift to forward your sleep schedule.

I don’t like to suggest a pill, only used if there is no other way to get some more consistency in your schedule.

hollow current
# toxic ivy does anyone know why playing FPS games could cause you to have vertigo despite i...

Usually this is from a mismatch between what your eyes see and what your vestibular apparatus senses. Like have you ever worn a VR headset and gotten motion sickness?

The reason is usually that there is a delay between the information on the screen and your movements. Like you suddenly turn your head right, your brain recognizes that and it SHOULD mean that what your eyes see also pair with that but in VR there sometimes is a delay (internet lag, frame rate or whatever) so you get motion sickness.

One thing you can try is sitting farther from the monitor so that your eyes can use the stillness around the monitor as a “visual” anchor for the brain.

Well there is a lot that can go into this.

You started exercising so maybe you’re body is asking for recovery.

If taking caffeine in the morning it could be an afternoon crash.

Are you sleeping the hours your body needs?

Naps of 15-30 mins in the afternoon are actually healthy and good for productivity.

What are you eating? Carbohydrate meals tend to increase sleepiness due to the amino acids they contain. Try eating more fat/protein lunches.

Some basic stuff.

hollow current

  1. Don’t have any sources of caffeine but I do tend to eat cereal in the morning.
  2. Most likely true, 2nd week into doing strong lifts 5x5
  3. Sleep schedule is a little borked but I try to sleep from 11-7 but most people in my house are nocturnal so it’s not consistent.
  4. Naps are kinda inconsistent and they tend to be at least 2 hours so that could factor into it.

evaluate where u wanna go after a bit instead of just bruteforcing weight loss

#

a period of maintenance is nice during a diet, since it gives ur body a bit of a chance to normalise metabolic rate for you to then go into another period of deficit (or not)

#

also if youre fairly new to lifting, being ok with having some extra body fat at the start is pretty good, since your body composition improves over time even without further deceasing bf%

#

also ofc make sure you have adequate protein intake, and consider increasing it further if you are on the lower end of 'recommended' intake levels

hollow current

Solid tips. Rule of thumb for protein intake is 1:1. 1g per 1lb. Higher intakes have been correlated to decreased muscle breakdown.

Wrist pain is by far the MOST common complaint I get when I work with pros and gamers. And the first thing they often encounter online are resources telling them to rest, brace, just do stretches! Sorry, that’s not going to help in the LONG run. These are just methods for short-term relief. I’m Dr. Hwu, and I’m the esports injury doctor. Over th...

# violet swan does a caffeine addiction affect my gameplay ? and in a negative or positive way...

Caffeine enhances cognitive performance especially when combined with L-theanine. But you mentioned “addiction” which inherently is not good. Needing a substance to feel normal is never good. If you’re addicted you probably need caffeine just to perform at normal levels at this point and would need higher than normal doses to get benefits. Would definitely recommend tapering and cycling your caffeine.

My first thought would be that you have tendinopathy of the adductor pollicis muscle

molten badge
#

the adductor being the one that closes the hand, right?

#

or rather, the thumb

hollow current
#

And it has been going on for years? What activities makes it worse? What have you tried to make it better?

molten badge
#

it originally started because I was looking for solutions to wrist pain, and got a thumb trackball

#

which worked fine for a while

#

but then my thumb started to hurt really bad almost out of nowhere

#

the problem is that

hollow current
molten badge
#

even when it heals and I don't get acute pain

#

there's just this diffuse, "general" pain in my right hand that frustrates my doctors lol

#

because it can't be pinned down to any particular spot

#

the hand just sort of hurts, in general

#

and when I get into that state, I cannot figure out causes or solutions. it seems to just show up randomly, regardless of what I actually do

hollow current
#

Is it more prominent in the thumb and the next two fingers? Do you feel that pain jn the pinky and ring?

molten badge
#

never in the pinky or ring

#

sometimes I get some pain in the MCP joint on my right index finger

#

and sometimes the pain radiates from the thumb all the way down the arm

#

I was actually mostly pain-free most of this year, as I started working out in february

#

my arms are much stronger than they used to be

#

but then I started playing first person shooters again, using a claw grip

hollow current
molten badge
#

I'm like 99% sure that was the culprit here lol

but I haven't played in weeks and it's just not getting better

@molten badge Please try doing the Phalen's maneuver. Let me know if anything happens. You can google how to do it.

hollow current
#

You said you had pain but then it went away but are left with limited mobility

#

Impingement is usually in the subacromial area. Its when the muscle tendons are trapped between the acromion (part of shoulder bone), the bursa (a little water balloon that protects from friction) and other structures.

#

Repeated movements while things are impinged can cause inflammation (the pain), but then it can progress to the tissue becoming fibrotic (like thin and crappy) and eventually breaking.

#

Is there a possibility you ruptured it? Yes. Can I have an answer? No.

#

Could I be completely wrong about everything? Yes. So best advice is to try and get an ultrasound or xray done to the area to have confirmation.

molten badge
#

nothing on the phalen's test aside from a touch of pain in the fleshy part of the thumb where I circled before

#

I did have an EMG of my right arm done in 2019

hollow current
molten badge
#

all normal

#

of course, things could have changed, but my symptoms right now are basically the same as when I had them in 2019

grizzled oracle
molten badge
#

"fibrosis" is just another term for scarring basically

#

hollow current
# molten badge all normal

Well if the biggest thing right now is that pain then it would suggest a tendinopathy of a pollicis muscle. Tendinopathies usually go away after some rest but you've had it for years right? Again, a PT would be better suited than me. Contact Caitlyn, Dr. Hwu, or Dr. Tsai from 1HP. They are experts in this sort of thing in gamers.

molten badge
#

the acute pain is usually not present but I am currently dealing with it

#

it's been the chronic, diffuse, hard to pin down pain that's been giving me a hard time the last few years

it's just like there's some kind of strange weakness in my hand that never quite gets better and makes it really easy for me to hurt myself

weird thing I found out, but I'm able to lower my performance anxiety by holding cold water in my mouth when gaming. Was wondering if anyone else does that or something similar?

molten badge

anxiety can sometimes be mitigated by distracting yourself heh

hollow current
#

I'd say that would be similar to how people use gum as well.

#

Just a distraction.

urban linden
hollow current
#

Are you a very jittery person?

hollow current
urban linden
#

well actually my body hates the cold like uncontrollable shakes, but when I lay on the ground I can stop it and my body just gets use to it

hollow current
#

Its like a technique to help people learn skills implicitly is called dual-tasking. Like swinging a golf ball while counting backwards from 10.

#

You gaming, while trying to hold water is pretty similar.

#

Well the water thing might be a momentary help but working on the performance anxiety itself would be more practical. Things like meditation and visualization can help

urban linden
#

I see, dual-tasking sounds like the most common conclusion people have told me, I basically use this as a sort of crutch I guess, to help my rational thought flow. I agree with stuff such as meditation and yoga, but I'm still trying to build a better space for it, just by adding more visual things like plants and something to set fire like lanterns

I got an rsi, is it still okay to aim train in moderation even tho that’s the reason I got it

tawny oyster
#

probably best to rest

molten badge
#

rest

#

that shit can spiral out of control fast

#

plus from a performance point of view, you don't really want to be training when you have an injury because developing proper habits depends on all the parts working properly

#

and if you're hurt, you'll likely be overcompensating in certain ways

#

which may lead to improper technique

#

also ugh I think it's time for me to just wear my splints for a while...

pulsar niche
velvet matrix
#

@pulsar niche my doctor, they just said avoiding what caused if it’s possible for a few days and rest my arm/wrist then slowly get back into what I was doing

errant kestrel
#

if you develop RSI issues it's very rarely from the load you're placing on yourself, realistically the movements of a mouse should not cause any serious issues.

#

it is almost certainly bad form and a lack of strength/developed muscles causing the strain

#

Take a break, let the inflammation go down. But please look into your bad habits/form/weaknesses and address those issues before you get back into aimtraining

#

If you have insurance or the money I would go to a sports medicine doctor and explain what's going on to them. Make sure they investigate the trapezius/shoulders/back/neck/c6+c8 nerve roots etc.

#

Everyone here will recommend rest and stretches which will help alleviate the symptoms but unless you address the root cause you'll be right back where you are right now

tidal root
#

after pushup do you feel your mouse is lighter so i it good or bad

velvet matrix

hollow current
#

As far as I know there is no conclusive medical evidence linking marijuana smoking to depression.

#

Like most things it depends on the frequency and reason for partaking in the behavior.

#

A lot of people smoke and get high as a form of escapism and momentary pleasure to avoid IRL problems. This leads to more smoking, and the underlying problem going unattended and festering longer and longer.

civic rose

So it isn't a stimulant of some kind right? Like you get a temporary high then a longer low
