Ability creep was definitely a problem in games since retention became the winning method of making money in the FPS scene, but it's also just the tonal shift of having that lowest common denominator. FPS before would always self filter over time because either the shitters would make their own restrictive servers to avoid good players, or stop playing altogether.
Now there's so much done to retain them and they don't bring anything good to the genre.
