Boxing becoming safer has little to no correlation with the sport dying off. as recently as the early 2010s and the late 2000s the sport was practically in heaven in terms of intrigue with the shane mosleys of the world fighting damn near contender they could find, along with prime Mayweather, pacquiao, diego corrales etc. It's all about how that sport is structured and how the matchups everyone wants don't happen until two participants are out of their primes and build up hype for half a decade

MMA is safer than boxing though. increasing amount of body parts that can take damage is unironically preferable to a boxer taking practically guaranteed liver kidney pancreas and head damage.

you get all that in the UFC of course (i better not see any crayon eaters acting like i'm just not acknowledging this to make a lazy point that shit is lame) but the fights are shorter (thankfully. also i prefer MMA anyway), and they're easier to stop in that shorter time frame. the elevated amount of ways in which a fight can end dilutes the likelihood of suffering some debilitating illness.

the one thing boxing has over it, is the potential to make far more on a per-fight basis

the most unhealthy thing bout per bout in either sport has got to be the dehydration involved in weight cutting. people have died in this century over that stuff

football being more dangerous than either sport depends on position. Linebackers be getting fucked up long term. linemen and running backs as well. after that if you were to rank it, safeties are involved in plenty of scary collisions. tight ends too.

if there was an argument to be made for football generally speaking, I think it would have to be the sustained damage without adequate rest for the duration of the NFL season mixed with rampant painkiller use to get through it. and insanely high CTE risk. especially running backs and linemen.
