Depending on the way your car gets the reset, your wheels will leave the ball earlier.
Just like when you go for a ceiling shot,
Sometimes your wheels just go off the ceiling earlier.

Test the timing with the ceiling and test the timing with the ball until you get good at it then start working on doing it with your pop resets.

There are only like 6 hitboxes for all cars in the game,
