then you can air steer left and right and no air roll needed

General tips would help

I played a bit in the past but nothing remotly serious

[vale tangle]

1. make sure you have reasonable settings or mechanics will be hard. i recommend starting around 110 270 100 -5 .40 for camera, 0.05 dz 0.70 ddz and 1.3 sensitivity (both) for ps4/5 controller, 0.07 deadzone if xbox controller. all video settings lowest or off except render quality (high quality). just dedicate one bind to directional air roll right for use later, and preferably change the powerslide key and regular air roll to L1/LB for easier use.
2. how rotations work on a basic level - is that the first person should try to go for it almost always, and the second should follow close enough to score or take over, but far enough to save any shot. the best advice is to watch the opponents car instead of the ball, as it gives you a better idea where the ball can go and what's happening. after the first person goes, they should rotate around the long way to the opposite side of the ball, where they don't get in the way of the team and can see the whole field with plenty of space.
3. general tips is to stay away from corners unless it's 100% free and easy (all the way until like gc+ really), never follow your teammate too close near corners, and if ever the ball is above you just leave as fast as possible to where you can see. when rotating back behind, do it quickly and make sure to steal and grab all the boost you can on the way. always fight for boost and move quickly. don't flip so much when moving or even hitting the ball as it can put you out of position and cause immobility (very risky).
4. improvements tips are to just play freeplay a ton, people have thousands of hours in the game and there's no shortcut it's just lots of practice. focus on hitting the ball as hard as you can with the corner of your car, and if you flip into the ball make sure you flip b4 touch

i recommend watching higher level gameplay and seeing how they approach defense in action. you will notice it looks easy when they do it, and it's because of their positioning and movement. always in defense you should try driving up and turning around, then trying to cut the ball off before the shot is threatening. it's a balance of being not too close or far, watch the opponents car for more hints of when they can fire it past you or when there's no threat. if it's on the ground then feel free to just challenge it since it can't go over you. always send it to your own corner then just wait patiently, it's safest there.

yeah it's definitely a big deal especially things like the fov (default 90) and the controller deadzone (default .30) these will be detrimental to the car feeling responsive and being able to see and do mechanics. other settings can be preference and are workable (although 99% of pros use the same settings or close) but you at least need fov 109-110 and a deadzone between 0.05 and 0.10 to play competitively. *and making sure camera shake and vsync are off of course

same camera settings as it's not input dependent, and kbm just has no sensitivity or deadzone obviously so it doesn't matter. for binds I'm not sure as there's not a 'gold standard' for kbm pros like there is for controller high level play. just making sure you can use air roll, powerslide and directional air roll freely and comfortably while doing everything else.
