Watch your replays. Gamesense is gained by having seen similar situations and reasoned what best to do in them. If you look at situations where you feel like something went wrong e.g. in rotation where you were involved, and you take the time to properly think through the situation, it can massively speed up the process of learning how to react in these scenarios.

Well, if your car control was at the point where you could consistently dribble in game I would doubt you are plat. I would recommend more of a regiment of defensive work at that rank since it will benefit you the most with teammates and opponents lacking gamesense, meaning you will be able to score lots of counterattacks as well as prevent them. Also slowin makes a good point with offensive work

Well that makes a solid point to, learning a front flip flick, 45° flick, and when to low 50 are the progressions from dribbles to provide offensive pressure.

Go into training and dribble with the game speed slowed so you can learn the timing and movement for the flicks and become consistent, then just emulate the movements with the game at slightly faster speeds in training until you get to full speed

But at what point do I transition from being positioned behind them in midfield, trying to be facing the play as much as possible to turning around, facing away from the play, to shadow?

Essentially up to myself to decide whether I challenge/beat them or transition into shadow instead? Or is there some kind of optimal system behind it?

If you mean just first man it's just as soon as your teammate is behind you and don't really dive in just stall as much time as you can and if you see a chance where your almost sure its a goal take it. But as soon as your teammate as least has you covered with boost you just make it as ez as possible for your teammate to take it
