the most wrong advice I have heard is "hold down-right while using air roll left to turn left and hold up-right while using air roll left to turn right"
using the right side of your stick like that when taking off from the ground can allow you to gain some height while turning if you "tap" it
but holding it or doing too much input will result in you "going backwards" while flying.
so focus on making small air roll movement when necessary and keep adjusting with your stick without air roll
until you can control these small air roll movements
then start chaining them together to go higher/lower or to turn more
