there's no "first thing", there's things you do well, and things you do bad

best advice i can give you, is to install bakkesmod, get the plugin that automatically uploads all your replays to ballchasing.com, then you can ask someone that's gc+/ champ if you're low enough, to review your decision making

getting the plugin allows you to not have biases saving good or bad games

Hm, as mentioned above im kbm and don't have insight on this.
However a good general piece of advice would be to look up pro controller settings, and try them out until you find a layout you like

and if nothing works, you can always swap buttons and make a weird setup, i use side mouse buttons for air rolling, which is unconventional, but i heavily prefer it to the E,Q default for kbm

A good recommendation would be, directional air roll on either your right or left bumper; and your free air roll on the opposite.

For me it's the left bumper, and then I have free air roll on my right bumper. I have drift on my left bumper but you could very well put your drift on the right bumper.

You can even put your leaderboard on square since there's nothing there with these settings

I'm also D3 and trying to break this habbit. I think it's because we don't have a lot of solo moves that we can reliably score with, so we don't value possession as much as we should

My friends who got me into RL are both GC and you can tell when they get possesion they're looking to score right away. I'm usually just trying to avoid defenders and advance the ball becuase I'm not very confident in my air dribbles or flicks

Do you need them? Probably not. Do they make the game way more fun? Oh yeah. I just need some kind of move that I can reliably use to score in a 1v1 situation, doesn't even matter what. Something I'm confident I can get passed a goalie
