I usually just drive away from them and powerslide if they're matching my speed. Otherwise you can jump, stand still or brake slightly if they're faster to throw them off. Demo chasing leads to a lot of 1v2 situations for your team you can take advantage off from my experience

Actually, start off first with Basic Aerial Packs like 'AERIAL - PASS', I wouldn't suggest going for redirects right away.
You'll need them around Champ - SSL.

Redirecfs will have a super high edge in Plat - Low Champ

But you can't go for them if your basic aerials aren't up to mark

GC and beyond, redirects are mostly saved, so then you polish your speed and accuracy and try a little more complex redirects like ones right through the narrow corner on the wall next to the goal

somewhat useful in situations that occur very, very rarely, sure. practical enough to learn and use your time to improve them? absolutely not. there are way more beneficial things to be practicing. i only recommended that he do the pack as a way to improve general air control. once he has a feel, he can move on to some packs like "Aerial - Pass" or others that @spark hornet has mentioned previously.
