It's not that they run out. It's hard for rune to deal with barrier.

It's strong play in the mirror as well. Only destruction gets past barrier, i.e. bane & holy vessel.

So portal and haven in particular can deal with that combo.

There are gold rewards for reaching certain master level thresholds but, personally, I don't have the time anymore to hit the leaderboards

Maintaining diamond mmr in A0 and maintaining it in AA0 are not even remotely the same. It's even harder in Master unless you're playing Forest or Portal. Rune, unfortunately, is not what I'd call a great deck for climbing
