Sure Mihoyo have done some questionable (repeatedly treat the player base like dirt) things, and the game hasn't aged all that well, but it was ahead of its time when launched. A Breath of the Wild quality anime game on mobile for free. It was the perfect storm for them combined with covid when a large portion of people were stuck at home. Genshin changed the thought that all gacha were just low quality, low production valued trash to the mainstream. They also had a commanding head start lead for taking that risk cause no one else had the balls to invest over 100 million in a gacha when the risk of failure was high.
