For some reason my dell laptop keeps shutting down when on battery power, happened twice when it was on and many times when it was in sleep mode. When I check logs it says that it shut down because of a kernel api, I've tried windows 10 enterprise ltsc and 10 pro but they both had this problem. Weird thing is that when I had chrome os flex and chrome os brunch frameworks on it was completely fine and never turned off randomly. Please help I have no clue what to do.😭

#Dell xps 13 9343 keeps randomly shutting down on windows 10

Can you send the logs and stuff?
The chromeos stuff is based on linux and wont be affected the same; most of the time its more resilient as souch
To solve the windows issue we need the exact codes
The logs in the bios under the power off section only say Software request and ACPI power management
I also tried windows 11 and it didn't have the random powering down issue but it didn't enter sleep mode when I closed the lid even though the screen turned off and it went on the lock screen
thats a weird issue... did you install GPU drivers when you installed windows 11?...
also check your battery health just in case...using hwinfo64 software...
In the bios it says the health is good
battery health?...
yes
I think so because the screen flashed and it became smoother and I could control my brightness so yes the drivers got installed
also ...pls dont try modified version of windows like LTSC... clean install windows via bootable usb first.... and install all official drivers for your device....
I thought about that and tried to put windows 10 pro, cleaned and formatted the drive and installed the regular version using a usb, same thing
Installed all the drivers and updates
make sure you followed the procedure properly... clean install meaning you wipe the entire drive...
do it again...and this time...make sure you installed official drivers from dell website...did you change the ac adapter recently?
No I didn't change the ac adapter recently and all the drivers were from the offical dell website for my specific model
run cmd as admin... and type this.. powercfg /systempowerreport
I don't have windows 10 installed on it anymore, its 11 right now
its the same thing...
or did you mean...your pc never shut down..in win11?
yes, the issue only happened on windows 10, not 11
but then 11 doesnt even enter sleep mode when shutting the lid, maybe 10 had the issue when unplugging the ac connecter, going into sleep mode and then going out of it? I'm not sure
could be a bug with the sleep mode...that triggering the shut-down...
maybe
whats your GPU inside?...
Intel HD graphics 5500
can you tell me the serial number? ...usually printed on the sticker...or on the back
by serial number...I meant service tag
type msinfo in windows search... and enter... check for the bios version...you can also screenshot the details
I remember the bios version, it's A20, the newest one
your pc officially...doesnt support 11 anyway...although that shouldnt stop you from using sleep mode.... did you download GPU drivers from dell or let windows update do it for you?..
On windows 11 windows update did it for me but for 10 I did it from dell
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/servicetag/0-b2s5UDBkTzJaalNNaGZ6ZTZpN0dLUT090/drivers do it from dell again...for win11
The weird thing is that when i closed the lid and opened it again the screen was off for a second and it turned on to the lock screen, so windows recognized it closed
And by any chance, windows 11 is pretty laggy for me, can I fix the windows 10 problem? Other than that it runs very well on 10
that could be also mean... that it was just a simple screen turning off...instead of S mode
only way to know whats causing it...is to go back to windows 10 and reproduce the problem...
I remember the windows 10 event viewer log before the laptop shut down, it read: The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition. Shutdown Reason: Kernel API
thats why I told you to run that cmd command... it would have shown you the shutdown reason...
anyways...report back when this problem comes back...in windows 10
event 109 can be a hardware problem...or a bug... pray its the latter...because something is triggering a shut down....
Some time today I will try to install a older version of windows 10, instead of 21h2 or 22h2
I'll try 20h2
You can try the latest...
I tried and that's what happened
I understand...but older versions may cause some other issues...and it will eventually try to update to the latest windows 10 build...
I'll disable the updates will a github tool and try and see if I get the shutdown error
Report back...just run that command again when you see a shut down..and screenshot the results...
I didn't experience a shut down though
Ok, now I experienced a shut down
But it was during sleep mode
I went in my settings and found the hibernation was on and it was set to like a 10 digit number so I changed it to Never and it didn't turn off when I put it into sleep mode. I will keep using it and see if it still turns off
Report back...
I don't think it shuts down anymore but now it wastes so much battery in sleep mode
In like an hour it wastes 30% and I've tried disabling modern standby too
I have a feeling that sometimes it enters sleep mode and sometimes it also just randomly exits
It's pretty hot right now touching it even though before it was cold and I just opened it to check the battery percentage and closed it right away, 20 minutes ago
I think sometimes it enters sleep mode and sometimes not
I actually discovered something today, just like on windows 11, with windows 10 20h2 it doesn't enter sleep mode at all, not just when I close the lid but even if I press the sleep mode button, I installed all the drivers too
So the reason is same, sleep mode somehow causing it?
I'm not sure, I think sometimes it still enters sleep mode, it's confusing
whats the update now?...
idk same thing
use the latest windows...reproduce the crash...then send me that report link!
I checked event viewer and it says things like exiting connected standby reason: ac adapter and entering connected standby reason: ac adapter
I don't know if I should update back to 22h2 because it might make the issue worse in some way
ac adapter causing ...the exiting of the standby?... welp...it may be picking up the AC when connected and records the event...hence it exits stanby mode...
These are not actually issues...but information only...
Yea but for some reason when I opened the lid me thinking it was in sleep mode the battery drained from about 40% to 19% and the laptop felt super hot
2 more logs I found
I will try updating from windows 10 20h2 back to 22h2 to see if anything changes.
I have updated to windows 10 22h2 again
I decided to test it now. I heard the fan so I put it to sleep mode and closed the lid, I heard the fan turn off for 1 seconds and instantly turn back on again and not turn off again. Here are the logs, keep in mind all I did was put it to sleep mode, close the lid and after a minute open it again.
I think this might have been a fluke because I might have touched the TouchPad, but I don't think I did.
I would also know if when I opened the screen the wifi logo was there or not, when this happened it was connected but I just tried again and it actually went into sleep mode and it was disconnected for a couple of seconds.
I just realized that I had my s0 sleep state on, not the s3. I disabled the s0 state and enabled the s3 state and now it should actually go to sleep and not waste battery. Will report back tomorrow
Okay...
Btw 22h2 was slow so I decided to downgrade back to 20h2 through the recovery menu but I made sure s3 was still enabled, I'll see what happens tomorrow
If it gives me problems again then I'll go back to 22h2 again and won't downgrade anymore
Is your pc on..right now?
Open the lid...run cmd as admin..
Type powercfg /a
Yea I've heard about that command, I'll do it again but it said s3 is activated and s0 is unsupported which is what I want to see
Give me 3 minutes...
The power button light is on but the screen isn't turning on..
sigh..do what you did earlier...if screen doesnt turn on...
I force turned it off, give me a second it's turning back on
Well it's back on now atleast
S0 used to be enabled but I used a registry tweak to disable it
Was s3 officially supported?...
I'm pretty sure every laptop supports s3
And windows 10 also supports it if that's what you mean
Nope!..not always...
anyways...it could be something to do with..the gpu driver..or firmware bug...if this continues!...
Also run that battery report command...
Sleepstudy report...
also..the times.. are these the times...when you tried to wake it from...sleep but no screen?
It started after that, I just opened the lid again and the screen isn't turning on again.
at this point..it appears to be gpu driver bug or firmware issue
Where did you install the gpu drivers?..from windows update?
I'm having issues everywhere with this laptop, every time i restart I need to go to bios and turn off and on the wifi options to get wifi working.
No, from dell
Its old at this point...such things are expected...
Yea but I've seen 2012 laptops work perfectly fine
I think it might be the motherboard
Welp!.. You are just unlucky...
Issue can occur anytime...for any device...
I want to switch to Linux but they all have a ugly ui in my opinion and chrome os won't cut it for me
Try using the gpu driver...from intel website..
I'll try updating to 22h2 tomorrow..
I know i dont recommend..intel website...for laptops..but... i guess its worth a shot!..
I'll try that first
Check.. Also undo that registry changes...
Thats.. the last thing we want right now...
Windows was bugging again so I decided to switch to Linux, trying zorinos
report back!
I went somewhere outside of where the laptop is right now, it's also kinda broken, so I'll need atleast a week or 2
