#how do I stop this from happening
33 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
When does it appear?
randomly throughtout the day
You make steam check the files?
I validated them and it still happened
Try to uninstall and install
This file was probably a virus that got deleted and now it tries to run while it doesn't exist so you get this message
If it keeps appearing, there's probably a scheduled task trying to run it, but it fails since the file no longer exists
let me know if it's still happening I'll suggest some places to search
That is somthing that is prob a virus you installed lol; gl
I suggest you dont pirate games
bc thats what it looks like
I dont. I legaly bought it
is the message still appearing?
Okay no worries, let's see if we can find out what's prompting that to appear. Next time it appears, can you leave it open, and then open task manager
Right-click any column heading (like I right-clicked CPU here) and choose Command Line, then you'll see a column showing the full command path of the programs in the list. Find that dialog box (script host) and see what the command line running it looks like.
ok
would disabling windows script host work as a fix?
that'd really just kind of mask the issue, it'd still be attempting to fire somewhere
I honestly think its a windows 10 thing. I upgraded to 11 for like a day and it didnt happen. I just dont like the layout and the way the icons look on 11
No, the message you were getting is nothing about Windows 10
that sure seems like a very nonstandard way for it to sync if it's legit... such a strange thing. But in any case, that sync.vbs file is gone so it's never gone to do anything but complain. I suspect it was perhaps a malicious file hiding with that name, and it got zapped by antivirus at some point.
For this showing up at 6pm every day, I wish I had a super fast way to find it. You can check through Task Scheduler for things and see if anything matches the time or mentions wscript.exe (generally no task is going to be running that unless it's malicous)
If your implying I pirated the game I didnt. I have proof below. Where would I look in task scheduler to find it?
I found it
no it has nothing to even do with the game, what I'm implying is some other, unrelated malware, used that path and name to pretend to be related to the game
I wont even guess how that occurred or got there, it's just a guess of what that file is. I seriously doubt it was ever really part of steam or the game
that updater task is probably not legit either but check what the action is
also maybe consider a tool like malwarebytes
