I guess to add more details I want to say that basically I am on a laptop, a Acer Nitro 5, AN515-55, which came with windows 10 and a 256gb m.2 SSD stock, I learned that you can not "migrate" m.2 > sata, only sata > m.2, because regardless of the fact that they were both 4k sector sizes, I guess it's a round hole square peg scenario... So my solution was thought then to completely install windows fresh onto the sata drive
#Installing windows OS onto new Sata via USB not working
209 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
To do this I had downloaded the windows 10 version media launch installer to a Samsung USB, and then had to disable the Acer nitro 5 secured boot loader, via holding F2 on boot I navigated to make myself a supervisor password in my security, then in the boot options I disabled secure boot, then I removed my password from the supervisor security, and finally I went into the main settings and turned on F12 for boot menu option. I restarted and hold down F12, received the correct boot menu and selected the Samsung USB.
Windows seems to completely install... And as you can see it gets to the next screen to restart and finalize... But then for no reason I get that blue error
I'm tempted to yank my OS drive out and try again?
I don't think the process you went through was normally necessary. Secure boot should be on the entire time during your installation process
was the machine already encrypted beforehand?
if it was, you probably didn't actually do a full reinstall, you performed an inplace install
which means the drive is still encrypted, with the old credentials from the old install
you need the recovery key, or to completely wipe the drive
it means you booted up an encrypted drive, then reinstalled windows on it without saving the key anywhere, and then after the next reboot your system is not accessible anymore
because it's encrypted
yeah i just tried it again withyout the secured boot off, i re-enabled it and it still doesnt' install
the recovery key is a backdoor key to access the hardware decryption key
is there a way to wipe it?
yeah
i mean i feel like i kinda did wipe it formatting it
ah if you are sure you did
i used mini-tool partition wizard also to "wipe"
then you probably just need to clear the secure boot keys
or tpm keys
or whatever they're called
i'm willing to try anything at this point what do i do
there should be an option next to or near the secure boot option called "factory reset tpm key"
or something like that
or just "delete tpm key"
secure boot option.... hmmm
varies depending on manufacturer
sure
security or boot
there
in security
"restore secure boot to factory default"
but also
you may need to reinstall again after that
I see, weird
ok so i hit enter on that, and it asked me if i wanted to restore and i said yes
nice
that should clear everything out so that you can reinstall from scratch
but also uhm
so you think i can try to reinstall?
no
ah ok
ok nice then go ahead and try to boot
ok
if windows doesn't work now, just boot from the USB and do a quick reinstall
delete all partitions
select empty space
then spam next and it should be gucci
always do that
that is the proper way to do a reinstall
if you select the same drive again, it's not going to do a full reinstall
it's going to do an in-place reinstall
you need to remove the partition
preferably all the partitions
so i format the old drive and then install onto the new drive
yeah delete all partitions on all drives
understood
so you only have drive 0 empty space and drive 1 empty space
then pick one of the empty spaces, and windows will automatically partition all the required partitions
crossing my fingers please work
it should be fine after that :)
so it gives me an option for delete
it's just bitlocker can be a bit tricky to reset to a blank state if you're not used to it
yeah delete all of them
super weird but it re-installed onto the original drive despite my choice
Or maybe I'm crazy
No that looks like it's right
Do I need to go into my boot menu and redirect my drive to boot now?
It seems like... It worked I think
But I don't get an option to switch boots
@tacit slate
What I will say... Is it did not give me the blue error
that's exactly why you need to use the delete button on this screen to clear it completely xd
I did
it will sometimes go like "oh there's a windows bootloader on this drive and it points to a different partition so let's just overwrite that install instead"
It became that unallocated
yeah
installing over unallocated space is the best practice to make sure it selects a fresh install
Says in that photo drive 2 now has multiple partitions like it ought too
ah that's the 2TB one
But when the install finished it restarted and brought me back to the USB boot
but why is that also bootable?
yeah you probably need to set your boot options
but if you installed on drive 1 unallocated space
you now have two bootable drives with windows installed on each
just so you know
I think probably two separate bootloaders as well
where one knows about the other and the other doesn't
ah
and currently drive 1 should be empty unallocated
its going into a external enclosure
acting as a usb
but ive got a m.2 for it's place 2t after this
i want my os on the sata drive first
but u helped me get this far... and i believe we maanaged to install windows on to drive 2
but i do not see drive 2 as a boot option in that last photo i sent
hm
it might be corrupt
it might be an install without bootloader
just try again until it sticks :D
I'm pretty sure your TPM keys are reset properly at least so you should be good to go once you figure out the install :)
hmmm....
so recommended i simply re-install and try again
yeah same thing again
its weird
i don't see the fat32 partition that used to be on the drive 1
it was tiny
like a bootloader, i would pressume
Here I'll find a photo of before
yeah that's a bootloader
I think the bitlocker bootloader
that loads the initial encryption stuff
at least I think that's how I remember it works
:D
How might you suggest I get another lol
just re-enable bitlocker
bitlocker is a full drive encryption system
it encrypts your entire drive
plus encrypts your bootloader
and replaces it with a different encrypted bootloader
it is what the old install had
Ok so I need it
it's encryption
so that nobody can access your data if they steal your laptop
it's entirely optional, but it's a great feature to enable if you ever need it
you enable it inside windows though
I mean I was happy with my laptop exactly the way it was, If you think I had it already then I presume that's what I need at this point to get it to work
Inside windows?
reinstall it again
I don't think you ever reinstalled on drive 2
since you cleared the tpm keys
You helped me however I believe install 95% of windows successfully
just unplug the 256GB drive if you're not gonna use it
and reinstall again on the 2TB one
Ok I'll do that give me 5-10
make sure it's reinstalled on unallocated space
So it installed... (I hope) but it restarts... And immediately jumps back to the USB install boot screen
I restarted manually and hold F12, to try to change my boot
But drive is not there
I'm gonna do it again to get a picture of the install 100%
But I think it's that missing fat32 partition
Still
Yeah I'm convinced it's the bootloader
No idea how to proceed
So should I be trying to clear my tpm or something
i've gotta run out for a few hours but i promise i will return. please help
i tried to do something i saw on youtube where u unplug ur pc or restart ur pc over and over and over until it goes into a diagnostic check, and u can open a troubleshooting comand prompt, but it seems to me that is only possible for people who have access to the drive... because the prompt itself is selected to a drive... and i can't seem to get that menu to even come up
@tacit slate
I don't feel like this is necessary, although if it's a new install I can't imagine how it could possibly hurt
ive gotta run out for dinner but i will be back later... still unresolved
in the end this discord community tried very hard to help me. i will say that nobody was able too... unfortunately the end result was cmdrkeene.com pretty much telling me i was wrong about everything, and judged my hardware....yet i was happy to show him a photo of so many extra drives and usb's from samsung already owned that i had to ask...will buying more of these top shelf drives really help...if i already own 3 or more? it will not... i've managed to install windows os onto a m.2 drive, but nobody on God's great green and blue earth could tell me why i can't install windows os onto a samsung 870 evo 2.5" sata drive... and so i say this was a complete waste of my time... every nerd on earth is less then my capability and understanding, microsoft/apple i'm here, working for amazon if u need me.
i would close this, but i refuse to lie (religious purposes) and so no.... it was not solved. enjoy keeping this open... i wish i saw a "Unresolved and Closed" option. Fact of the matter is NO it's not solved, and yes i'm ready to wipe my os drive at a moments notice if someone comes along and knows how to setup my sata (afterall i do have a handful of backup drives)... this ticket to remain open indefinetly.
windows has no problem installing a bootloader onto an m.2 drive, but it refuses to do so on a sata drive... and cmdrkeene wants me to know i was unable to do what 2billion people could do... lmfao
useless
and for the record, that exact same usb media windowsOS 10 installer that would not work, is the one that did work to the m.2
so the usb, the installation files, all worked... perfectly
i can acess the sata drive no sweat!, its JUST THAT 100mb FAT32 Partition BOOTLOADER i kept screaming about
i'm 100% positive u simps will read this and say, oh his problem is fixed. let me remind you, again you are wrong
hmu anytime u think u know the solution! i'm not scared
