#concerning pc crashing issue

Sometimes when I play certain games, the whole pc freezes instantly, and forces me to hold the power button and restart

This first started happening when I tried undervolting my cpu. It just kept happening like 5 mins after gaming. Resetting cmos fixed this issue and it didn’t happen since until now

Today I bought a new game, back 4 blood. The game crashed with a fatal error message. Then I reopened the game and the pc froze. I reset cmos again and reinstalled graphic drivers. This time the pc froze as soon as I clicked the open game button. I tested other games and they worked fine. This time I reinstalled the game but on a different drive. Played for an hour with no issues. Either something got corrupt or idk.

The pc passes every benchmark test I tried, and I’m just scared it’ll happen again. I’m not sure how I can diagnose this issue further it’s really scary like what if it’s a hardware issue.

This is a really high end pc with a 4090 and 13900k, 64gb ddr5 ram, temps are perfectly fine so I’m just so confused. Games like hogwarts legacy and the last of us 1 crash occasionally too but those games are known for that so idk what can I do?

Update: played back 4 blood for an estimated hour and a half or 2 hours, and froze again

#

I normally don’t game for more than an hour at a time, expect when I would play vrchat in vr. I could always play that for hours without issue.

#

This game is not even the most demanding my whole pc would use only around 450W and I had games where it would use close to 700

Second update: froze when I wasn’t even playing anything. This is getting weird now. I’m starting to suspect maybe it’s the new bios update cause it started ever since the update. Thinking of just downgrading back to the previous version

#

i appreciate the input, however that is unlikely for a number of reasons, such as its a brand new high end cpu and it passes all the tests i threw at it, including cinebench and prime95. The CPU also is not even close to being under full load when the issue occurs. But it IS still a possibility that I am not ruling out. The issue has returned after i updated bios so I am currently reverting back to the old version and hoping for the best.

#

I also suspect the ram because I have 4 sticks of ddr5 running at 6000mhz. the ram is rated for 6800 but when its that high i get a whole lot of memory issues, but i realized that at 6000 it was always stable, and memtest86 shows no issues after running it for 2 hours. they're all the exact same model of ram however the two kits were purchased from completely different places.

#

a screenshot from reliablilty monitor. it doesnt show everything but maybe it can tell someone something. one really says hardware error

#

any other way to see logs?

#

armourywebbrowseredge shows up in A LOT of these errors

#

now i remember, pc froze also in beamng, when i was just in the menu, so i dont think it really matters what im doing on the pc. and it started like 3 days after updating bios. so yeah i downgraded back to the previous version of bios, will wait like 2-3 days. if no crashes til then id say its safe to assume something got fucked with the bios

deep jewel
#

Could this also be true? Tf even is a motherboard driver

It's not recommend to do a bios update if you don't have any errors but in your case it may

#

But

#

You should check the game drivers requirements

#

If your missing one

#

Or the power

#

(if your PC it's getting enough ⚡)

#

Or GPU

deep jewel
#

Nah it’s a 1200w psu

#

I updated bios because of the 4 sticks of ram I’m using I needed better support

deep jewel
#

My question now is can a bios update cause freezing like this? I keep asking but no on one can answer, it’s just a yes or no question

deep jewel
#

I’m aware ram might be related, however I did run memtest86 and it found no errors. Granted I did for 2 hours but errors are usually found in the first 10 minutes. If ram is causing that then it’s just compatibility issues with ddr5 and maybe because it’s two separate kits but the exact same model or ram. All I know is the pc started freezing again after updating to the latest version of bios

#

I set them to run all at 6000, xmp ii

#

4 sticks can be too much for the memory controller I learned, however the pc has always been stable that way

#

Bios of course, I’m unaware of how in the os

#

It’s a Asus z790 hero motherboard it’s one of the higher ends one maybe that’s why it was stable

#

64gb

#

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/230496/intel-core-i913900k-processor-36m-cache-up-to-5-80-ghz.html I was sent this yesterday and it says 13900k only supports 5600mhz dual channel maybe that’s why

#

Nope, wait

#
#

The pc would freeze at random not just gaming

#

Well nvm I was always doing something

#

BRB

deep jewel
#

Last time it froze it was right after I updated some stuff using driver booster

#

Yea however everyone says it’s safe plus it finds updates which I would have ever found myself

#

The software find it

#

I downgraded the bios back it could be fixed now for all we know

#

It’s not

#

So am I, driver booster is proven though

@deep jewel try to change da games settings

#

or reinstall

deep jewel
#

that didnt work but no freezes so far since downgrading

open garnet
#

Maybe you should try to ask da devs

#

Of da game

#

lol

deep jewel
#

It’s not just in that game sadly

This utility scans the system for corruption in the system files which may be responsible for irregular operating system behaviour. For more information, check this page (written by Microsoft).

Use DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if SFC fails to properly fix the problem.

deep jewel
#

Yes

deep jewel
#

test was clean so for the time being im putting this thread on hold as the issue hasnt happened since i went back to the old bios.

deep jewel
#

Nvm froze again

#

Could hwmonitor somehow cause the PC to freeze? I swear it's been happening pretty much everytime it's open

deep jewel
#

Literally gaming for 2-3 hours with no issues without hwmonitor and haven't crashed since which sucks because I can't check CPU temps anymore

#

I'm just gonna use the PC for a month and if it still doesn't crash I'll install a different program

deep jewel
#

i THINK the pc froze again while i was loading hogwarts legacy, and then it recovered a second later. im not entirely sure it happened to ofast for me to check. Anyway if anyone can give answers about if hwmonitor can cause freezing or not id love to know

#

for cpu too?

boreal field
#

msi afterburner is created for that purpose!... usage temps power usage..to display in the corner..

deep jewel
#

but i want it shown in a seperate window not in the corner of my game because my monitor is too big for that

#

its super tiny

boreal field
#

Did you try hwinfo64 instead of hwmonitor?..

deep jewel
#

does it also show cpu temp and power usage?

boreal field
#

they function the same...

deep jewel
#

ill try it and update here ty

spare pawn
#

yes but only one of them has dark mode ;)

deep jewel
#

aight pc froze again for the first time in a while and it was on the latest bios firmware while running hwinfo sensors only. trying again but this time without hwinfo and if it freezes again then that pretty much confirms its the specific bios update causing it

#

and it it doesnt crash then it just means i cant use cpu measuring apps without crashing which is super annoying

deep jewel
#

and now i played jedi survivor for 2 hours with no pc crashes. the game itself crashed though but nothing to do with the pc itself

#

this time it was without hwinfo

#

gonna wait a few weeks or a month without hwinfo and see if the freezing issue continues
