#Upgrading from Windows 7 (32bit) to Windows 10 (64bit)
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Thank you
So... As I was saying..
Press Ctrl + Shift + i and a little menu should pop up on that website
like so
The developer tool?
Correct
In the left top of that little window, press the tablet icon, and it should adjust the size to what looks like a phone or tablet
Makes the site smaller
Now just refresh the page (F5) and you should get the site as if it was on your phone
Scroll down a bit until you see this:
Select "Windows 10: Multi-edition ISO" and hit "Confirm"
Then select any language you like..
You can change it after installing Windows.
Click Confirm once again and you should get 2 links
This time, you want to click the "64 bit download" link.
.iso file?
That will download the installer for 64bit Windows 10. It might take some time as it is a ~5GB download
Correct
Is this like the download like the media link for windows 10?
Yes.
The installer though, that is.
It means that the program you are trying to run is not 32bit
And as your Windows 7 is currently 32bit, it cannot run 64bit programs.
Oh okay
Anyways, while the ISO is downloading, head over to https://rufus.ie and download the latest version
Rufus is a small application that creates bootable USB drives, which can then be used to install or run Microsoft Windows, Linux or DOS. In just a few minutes, and with very few clicks, Rufus can help you run a new Operating System on your computer...
This is the tool we can use to get the Windows Installer onto your USB drive.
How can I check if the usb has spare space?
Oh.. The tool will completely erase the USB and put the Installer on there...
Oh
So if you have any (important) data still on it, I recommend you to put it on another PC.
Is there any way to do it without usb drive?
No, not really.
What does rufus do
This basically.
It erases your USB, puts the Windows installer on there and makes sure we can start your computer from that USB afterwards.
If it isn't that much data that is on the USB then it might fit on there after you put the installer on the USB
But you'll have to put it on your PC temporarily before making the installer then.
the data transfer or downloading the ISO?
Both
Take a while actually
Okay I finished the data transwfer
Wait what does this do?
I have to go sadly... Just let us know here when the download / transfer is finished, then we can continue.
Someone else under the role @Community Tech Support (CTS) might be able to help you in the meantime.
Otherwise, I will most likely be available <t:1676642400:R>
This just says that there might be a problem with your USB
This is most likely caused by it not being removed safely, but usually nothing to worry about.
You could just "Continue without scanning"
the download of the ISO too?
It’s burning something
What do you mean?
Oh you tried to open the file I guess?
You can close this by either hitting the cross or clicking Cancel.
Plug in your USB and go over to Rufus
Do I click it?
Click what exactly?
Yes
Just click No.
It should come up with a window with a lot of buttons and all
We will just work our way down..
First, make sure you have the right USB selected from the top dropdown menu
Then on the "Boot Selection" part, click the "Select" button. A file manager window should pop up
Did you plug in the USB?
Yes
that is weird...
Also 0 devices found
maybe try opening rufus again? and make sure to run it as an administrator btw
That is very weird
Does the USB show up in File Explorer?
Yes
Very very strange.
Are you sure there aren't any dialogs open on the background like Autoplay or the "Scan this device" window?
is it really a USB or more of an external hard drive?
If so, click the "Show advanced drive properties" and then select "Show USB hard drives"
Yeah this explains..
Alright. Then just hit the big "Select" button and navigate to the Windows ISO
It should be in your Downloads folder, and you can just sort by recently added.
Otherwise, you will be able to search for "*.iso" and it should pop up
Alright.. Ill just check if your PC is compatible with that
brb
So it seems like your PC should support GPT. So that is fine :)
Ok
There is no need to change anything else really.
All there is to do is press the START button
THIS WILL REMOVE ANY AND ALL DATA FROM THAT USB DRIVE THOUGH
Everything looks good to me
No worries, you backed up the data and you can just use the drive again after you installed Windows
Just let me know when rufus is done with making the installer :)
Do I press start again
@mint karma
Uhm
It is done yeah :)
Now, shut down your PC and say bye bye to Windows 7
Unless you have some data you forgot.
Ok
After that, press the power button and start spamming F9 until you get into the "Boot Menu"
Is this normal
Ok
Yup
Correct
I’m on the menu
Right... There might be multiple options, just use the arrow keys to navigate to your USB drive
The "UEFI: Generic External" one 👍
I’m loading instantly to something
Something with a Windows 10 logo? Good news..
Click "I don't have a product key".. Don't worry, it should just detect your Windows 7 key afterwards.
Now I’m on some selecting page
As long as you select "Windows 10 Professional" with "x64" it should just work
Pro?
Yup
It asks what type of installation
Click the "Custom" one
You'll get on a page to configure your storage.
Could you send a photo of that?
Delete both "Drive 0" partitions
THIS WILL REMOVE ALL DATA ON THERE
Do not delete the bottom 2 (drive 1) options
I just deleted the 400gb but it’s not going away
Is it called "Unallocated Space"? In that case, it is already deleted..
Perhaps send a photo so I can verify
That is perfect!
Right, select that "Unallocated Space" and click "Next" in the right bottom
It should then start installing Windows
It might take a while depending on your computer.
Yes
Once it reboots, you will get the first time setup to configure your account and (privacy) settings.
After that there are 3 major things to check:
- Is Windows activated?
- Are all devices working?
- Is Windows installed correctly
But that is for once it is installed, not now :)
The startup seems fine
Oh it is done already?
Alright, that was quick!
Nice
If you're on the desktop, then it should be done yeah
Just hold on a minute :)
Can you go over to the Settings app > Update and Security and hit "Activation" in the sidebar, then look if Windows is activated
Take the time
Ah okay it is still at the initial setup..
No problem
Sorry I’m just adding my account
As I said, take your time :)
Do I unplug the external drive
Anyways.. I have to go
Just check if Windows is activated using the message above.
After that, open Device Manager and make sure nothing shows up with a
icon
If that is both okay, then you're good to go
Ok
You can now yes.
Or format it and put back your data
No problem.
No
It’s not activated?
What version does it show? Windows 10 Professional right?
Also, is there a sticker with a key on the computer case (on top or on the back when in an upright position)?
Yes
You might be able to enter that code in as a product key, if it isn't activated already
It might look a little something like this
you cant activate 10 with 7 key
I have an HP PC too..
Also with a Windows 7 Professional OEM key
I even activated Windows 11 with it when I installed that unofficially...
i tried it on my pc it didnt worked
Hi Yuri sorry for the extremely long wait but I can’t find a sticker that looks like the product key
@mint karma is the product key inside the pc?
Nope. It should have just been saved in your BIOS (not visible, but Windows should activate automatically), and / or on a sticker on the exterior of your PC
25 digits? Yeah
Should I send a picture of all the stickers
You could yeah..
The one above the "HP" one..
Ohhhhh
"Product Key:"
try entering that in Windows
Yeah go ahead..
After that is it done?
If it works, then yeah!
Nice!
Just check Device Manager if everything works as it should and then you are ready to go
