could you show and explain your problem with Disk Managemant

#

show which partitions are used up, where your windows partition is etc.

#

that's why a nice infographic with Disk Management is better than words sometimes

#

you can rename the disks temporarily, or just censor them with MS Paint or something

#

could you explain, using drive letters, eg C:, D: what exactly do you want

#

hm, a folder seems problematic

#

so you don't have H:\Windows, but instaed H:\some\folder\Windows

#

could you shrink H: and then copy the 180 GB there?

#

in the windows folder on H:, do you have \WINDOWS\system32\winload.efi?

#

do tell more

#

output of bcdedit would be useful

#

not relevant

#

bcdedit would be useful

#

I can understand that, but that doesn't help, I'd like to figure out what you've configured using it

#

there's like at least 4 things to change

#

my idea is, using bcdedit, copy your current configuration, modify the new copy to point to H:\some\folder\Windows

#

doesn't matter

#

will you be doing that? do you need help w/ it?

#

sure, first I'll need the output of bcdedit

#

from an admin cmd

#

you know that I can't see your display, right?

#

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean

#

sure, go ahead

#

okay, could you send bcdedit of the "not working" state

#

it's literary one command to type

#
bcdedit /copy {current}
#

then bcdedit and send a screenshot 📸

#

then skip to the second step for now

#

is this windows 10 or 11?

#

and H: is?

#

try ```
bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Windows 10 (Copy)"

#

you know step 2 Winksplorer

#

step 2 shouldn't take this long...

#

that was not step 2. but ok

#

what did you use to change it?

#

you must have used a program of some sort to change the C: to H:...

#

alright, you're probably still not done

#

let me see what you've done so far: run bcdedit and send a screenshot 📸

#

interesting turn of events, hopefully that's not about your install on C:

#

alright, try to boot to the original windows, to C:!

#

physically unplug H: and then try to boot to C:

raw rapids
#

and this is the path on the disk?

#

this seems like it should work

#

the only question is whether the H: in your current windows matches the H: when during the bootup sequence

#

right lol

#

update the two lines and you should be good to go

#

well try looking at the log file now

#

and double-check the two paths in bcdedit

#

yeah you could run bcdedit in WinRE

#

it should be the same

#

but there's no harm in trying

#

yeah, it's getting kinda late here as well

#

good night and good luck

raw rapids
#

any updates?

raw rapids
#

why do you actually need it to boot?

#

I mean you already have access to all files...

raw rapids
#

I don't know what's wrong

#

best thing you can do right now is to read log files

#

to narrow it down

#

event viewer, srtTrail

lofty anchor
#

If Boot is the problem, have you tried adding the boot using bcdboot with the new windows installation location?

raw rapids
#

wouldn't hurt to have two pairs of eyes looking at the logs

raw rapids
#

hmm, yeah true

raw rapids
#

good!

#

I think there are BCD tools on linux

#

yeah, and PE has more tools then regular windows for the boot stuff

#

let me know if you run into trouble

#

or if you used a weird way to fix it

vocal jacinth
#

what are you even trying to do now after 260 comments done?ToddHappy

#

ya wanna dual boot?

raw rapids
#

could you post your Disk Management situation, and the current bcdedit configuration

raw rapids
#

Good morning!

#

Do you have a windows installer usb? @glossy basalt

#

In hopes of not breaking your existing system, I suggest you physically unplug your C: disk, and only leave D: plugged in. That way you can run bcdboot D:\Windows without unknowns: (existing bcd database, two systems to target, etc.)

#

I think that bcdboot.exe is only available in Windows PE/WinRE, so you'll need a Windows USB (as I've said in the messages above)

raw rapids
#

All I'm saying is: You can try to run bcdboot with C: connected, but it might not work and may break things.

#

Also, when booted from Windows PE, the disk letters might not match up to the letters that you get in regular Windows. So use diskpart and list disk, list volume to check the letters.

#

I suggest you read the linked article. It should do what you said.

#

I can never be sure until you try it!

raw rapids
#

definitely try dism+sfc scan

whole mortarBOT
#

This utility scans the system for corruption in the system files which may be responsible for irregular operating system behaviour. For more information, check this page (written by Microsoft).

Use DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if SFC fails to properly fix the problem.

👍 good stuff

#

I would boot from a USB.

#

You could create an VHD image with Hyper-V also and copied that to a hard drive and make it bootable. Does require some advanced skills because you would need to adjust the boot manager

#

Let me try to understand the full scenario? Why do you want to boot from another disk? From what I understand you messed up your UEFI? There are some many messages gone back and fourth, sorry it's impossible to read it all back. But if your UEFI is broken, I have my doubts if booting from another disk works. I would put all my eggs trying to repair the broken UEFI. Since UEFI is a bootloader, so if you boot from another disk, your bootloader is still broken. That's why I said booting from a usb stick with the installation media and trying to repair the bootloader https://woshub.com/how-to-repair-uefi-bootloader-in-windows-8/ @glossy basalt

In this article, we will learn how to repair the Windows bootloader on a modern computer that uses UEFI instead of a classic BIOS and GPT disk partition table (instead…

#

this means that UWP apps / apps from the Microsoft Store got corrupted

#

try (temporarily) creating a new user account and see if stuff is broken there as well

#

poke around in Settings -> Apps and see if there's some useful errors

#

maybe Event Viewer logs have something - windows (system) logs and application logs?

slim blade
#

i know this is a long discussion... but what exactly you want to do right now?..and what is your current situation?..

slim blade
#

You cant actually boot windows from external drives... You will need "windows to go" option for that!...

But i didnt get the second part of your issue!..

raw rapids
#

@glossy basalt your problem is no longer "I can't dual boot Windows", now it's "I have booted Windows, but it's corrupted in some way"

#

easiest and simplest way to solve windows corruptions is to reinstall windows, or in your case, don't use it

glossy basalt
#

Booted windows 10 but its corrputed

raw rapids
#

when i copied the system i copied it two times one time there was a lot of files that couldn't be copied and the other one copied most of the files
most is not all

#

and the Windows Store stuff has weird permissions and is really hard to copy and access

#

So your install might not be salvageable...

#

you could try an in place upgrade

#

oh yeah the permissions are probably messed up, and the Windows store stuff is sensitive to permissions

#

the sfc+dism might help for that

#

but I'm not really sure what's the best thing to do here

#

honestly it's pretty messed up so in in place upgrade might work?
https://youtu.be/9BWh0YRmnT8

By performing an in-place upgrade, you will clean up the system which may help resolve some issues. Here's how to install a Windows 10 upgrade on your computer without removing the older version first and without saving any data beyond normal precautions: 1) Download and install Windows 10 installation media
2) Sign into your account
3) Accept ...

#

does the windows version on your USB equal to or greater then the version on disk

#

you can use the usb for the upgrade then

#

just plug it in and double-click setup.exe

#

Maan, ya problem haven’t fixed yet?

#

Installing windows?
Then go ahead

#

Wut?

#

Bro ya not able to tell what ya doing right now
JUST install windows on this windows system

#

And ya will be fine

#

No, it will wipe all and install new windows system
Don't try to fix it

raw rapids
#

not sure what exactly it does, but it fixes problems with system corruptions

#

basically it reinstalls all system files

vocal jacinth
raw rapids
#

deleting everything is not an option for @glossy basalt

vocal jacinth
#

Why?

#

Exactly what own stuff?

vocal jacinth
#

Personal documents mean music files video photos word document

#

There is nothing you can do bro, it is corrupted from within windows system

It has to be wiped and reinstall

Just take backup of personal file of yours

#

Are you dumb?
There is no way you can fix a corrupted system,

You can continue using this messed up system forever
Cause only way to fix it is reinstall

#

Best of luck to ya, cause ya can't do anything even if you take 10 years JoyGonnaAscend

raw rapids
#

Yeah the system might work at first, but you'll run into weird issues quickly I think. Best to try to get it working now, and then copy/backup/export your configurations (for the customisation thing) to a new Windows system.

This is what happens when people Don't know about windows and starts being a stubborn

raw rapids

gonna be afk for the next ~40 minutes water

vocal jacinth
#

I know a lot about windows, Your uwp apps are corrupted, THIS will affect other soon as you use like @raw rapids said

Reinstall is your only option
