That true, no all-wheel drive is permanent. But the difference, in my opinion the important one, is that the classic all-wheel drive with all 4 wheels has a proper connection to the gearbox or combustion engine.
For example, with an real all-wheel drive, the gearbox really powers all 4 wheels and depending on how you want to gear it, it can be converted or set to distribute the power to 30/70, 40/60 or 50/50. But if only the rear-wheel drive is permanently connected and the all-wheel drive is generated via electric motors to the front wheels, that's a big different. You can't actually distribute the power generated by the combustion engine here because the electric motors on the front actually always go full throttle if they are needed for the all-wheel drive at that moment, and you can't give more power from the combustion engine to the front wheels.
