Im surprised to see there are 1000 less platinum positions for summits (and now car shows) than there was in crew2. I figured it would be higher because of the additional cross platform players. What do you think? Should it be a little higher? A lot higher? Lower even?

Depends on what platform you were on.
On xbox the summit platinum in TC2 is only the top 2100, so top 10000 is huge in comparison.
I do agree that it needs to be higher though. Currently less than 10% of ranked players can be platinum in TCM
I think an actual improvement would be a set score to reach instead of a set number of players.
You still get the leaderboards for those that value that and you also get more players that get access to the rewards.

Give it time, for now there is less players playing summit globally compare to just only PS.
Just look leaderboards for each race and you can see how many players actually play all of them. Them divide that by half, because not everyone play them for Platinum reward. So you can end up with around 30k players that want platinum reward....

I figured it would sit somewhere around 15000 spots to accommodate the other players, but I agree a different system would probably be better. I liked the system in crew 1 that was a set percentage so more often you'd actually be pushed into platinum instead of pushed out by the end of the week, but then for summits with low turnouts there are less platinum winners as well so maybe if there was a set minimum and it could scale up if needed with the number of players to say leave the top 10% or whatever they want to be platinum winners.

I think 10k is fine enough, the problem really lies on how stupidly hard it is to farm parts, not the summit bracketing itself.
Remember, Platinum isn't supposed to be easy.
