#Perfomance way below expectations with a RTX 5070

Ok so guys, I recently bought a new PC with an RTX 5070 and a i7 12700KF CPU. Before that, I was playing SE in a gaming laptop with a GTX 1650 and a Ryzen 5 4600H.

In that old pc, I used to get fps between 80-120 in medium settings. When I got the new PC, SE was the first thing I installed on Steam and straight way I booted up the game however, it caught me by surprise that the fps are way below what I was expecting. Currently, also in medium settings, I'm getting 60-40 fps when I get close to planets, but sometimes it increases to 150 when I'm exploring outside the galaxies.

I would like to know if anyone also with a RTX 50 series GPU is having bad performance, because there is absolutely no way a 5070 can perform worse than a laptop GTX 1650.

Important to mention: this is the only game where I've been struggling with performance, any other game I have installed, from Steam and Epic Store, run perfectly fine.

Thanks for posting in the support forums, jp01!

Guidelines and First Steps:

  1. Please include your se.log file located at <Steamapps>/common/SpaceEngine/system/se.log.
-# ^ This step is not optional for 95% percent of issues. If you need to know how put "!p log" into the chat below and i will give you a step-by-step
  2. Is your installation modded? Not all mod authors keep up with updates, and old or buggy mods can cause many issues, even those that may not seem related.
  3. Are you on the latest version? Older versions of SpaceEngine are not supported. Check your Betas tab in Steam to make sure you are on the current version.
  4. Have you updated your graphics drivers recently? We only test against up-to-date drivers. Old drivers can cause a plethora of issues.
  5. Does your PC meet the system requirements? (Windows 10, Dual core Intel i3 3rd gen / AMD FX or better, 6 GB RAM, GeForce 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 460 (4 GB)).

Did you set it to ultra?

honest peak
#

hi! just booted up the game and I set the graphics to Ultra
as expected, I go from 36fps to 160 from one second to the other, it's very inconsistent
but the average rn is around 40 to 50

other details I forgot to mention: my gpu drivers are updated, everything is up to date

Even on my RTX 4090 I keep LOD around 0.4 and loading speed around 8 for performance reasons.

#

Also, turn MSSA off. It's a performance hog for little visual gain.

honest peak
#

will check that out now thanks

#

Ok so even in the lowest quality graphics preset I'm still getting poor and unstable fps
Landscape is already set to 0 and loading speed to 1

Could you post a screen of your graphics settings?

Graphics settings and visual style

The graphics settings are almost identical to what I had in my old pc

Turn compress textures on. Btw, 3D stones should be fine for you to turn on as well.

#

You'll probably want to lower nebula resolution and gravitational lensing a bit too. Those are performance hogs.

#

Motion blur stars can also cause stuttering. (But I also personally just like them as points)

#

Planet shine medium can also fix some stuttering as well. Though I thought that was fixed awhile back.

Ok I've done some adjustments

The lowest the fps can be are when Im looking at nebulae yeah, for exemple helix nebula, when I got there I'm getting between 30-40fps, I've I stay static, no mouse movement, the fps increase to 88

grand agate
#

Yep, when still Nebula become skyboxes to save perfomance.

#

I upped the allowed skyboxes to over 20 in the main-user.cfg so I could crank the standing still resolution. Default skyboxes is 2 for some reason.

As for black holes, right now I'm looking at Holmberg 15A* and in some perspectives and running at 90-161fps

grand agate
#

I assume that it has no accreation disk?

honest peak
#

Quasar

grand agate
#

So it does have one? Not bad then. If I'm running max I'll dip into the 40-50s near them on an RTX 4090.

#

I'm now at ton 618, 169fps but there are way less stars around in this galaxy, the screen Is almost clean of shiny dots

grand agate
#

Yeah, the lack of stars is due to an engine limitation and Galaxies over 326kly in size.

honest peak
#

But yeah, maybe there's some kind of compatibility problem of the newer Nvidia GPU cards and the simulator
Because once again, I was getting almost the same performance with a low end GPU (gtx 1650) in a laptop pc

grand agate
#

Not sure how because I can definitely feel a big difference between the three GPUs I own.

#

Then again, I don't have a 5000 series to compare too though. Just 4090, 3080 and 960m (it tries it's best).

Btw other important thing I've noticed, when I get into a different stellar object, the initial frames are bad, barely reaching 60fps, but some minutes after they start to increase up to 100, it's another thing that did not happen to me previously in the old pc

Can you post a log file?

Locate the SpaceEngine Directory:

Open the file explorer on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where your Steam games are installed. The default path is usually:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEngine\system\

If you have installed Steam or your games in a different directory, navigate to that directory instead.

Find the se.log File:

Inside the SpaceEngine folder, go to the system subfolder.
Look for the file named se.log.
It may appear as just "se" if you do not have windows set to show file extensions

Post the se.log File:

Right-click on the se.log file.
Select Copy from the context menu.
In Discord, right-click in the text input area and select Paste.
Click the Send button (or press Enter) to upload and send the log file.

Ok 1sec

grand agate
#

I assume you had the same mods before?

honest peak
#

yep, those were in the previous pc

tawny fractal
#

so you said nebulae were the worst offender. Do other types of objects get good FPS?

honest peak
#

honestly it's just the nebulae that are impossible, always below the 50fps
the rest is simply unstable but I can reach good frame rate sometimes

honest peak
#

ok guys small update..I've been changing some stuff, deleted some workshop mods and the simulator feels much more smooth now
thanks so much for the help and tips
