It's not about applying it to pets, it's about making sure you can apply to multiple players.
If you try to sweeping smash with a ton of pets around, you will most likely sweep onto a pet rather than another player

Bleeds on pets result in healing, and it's also to make sure your smash hits players.

If you try to use blunt vs unholy/windwalker there's a chance you hit a pet with the swept smash.

That sort of thing. Also you can't "whiff" blunt because it won't go off if you won't hit them, as opposed to warbreaker where a mage can shimmer/blink away or a warlock can port during the animation, etc.

In general I think wb is usually the play but if it's an isolated target blunt can be nice.
