You'll probably lose damage trying to get them out rather than maintaining slows, overpowers and mortal strikes.

arms also just works incredibly well with ret and is a favourite comp for most ret players, which could be boosting representation a bit
other very, very strong specs like ele shaman have also disappeared overnight because of how hard-countered they are by ret

The problem I have is that their unkillable, unkiteable juggernauts of death with a ~20sec CD stun, 20yd range on their abilities, better utility than most healers, more sustained dmg than most classes have burst while also having avatar and recklessness as one CD with a 1min cool-down and multiple immunities and 2 1minute walls and an aoe blind and more base HP than anyone but warlocks

you dont really change your playstyle at all - mortal strike whenever you can, and whatever modifiers you get in the meantime are an added bonus
