I’d probably take helm if only to run it through the catalyst later if you find you’ve got one to spare. You can always craft rings that come with sockets and better stats later in the tier, but you can’t craft a helm for catalyst.

And if you find yourself needing to pick a socket for a bad vault week, you can drop it in your helm without worry of replacing it

If you intend to do raiding and M+ the helm is very strong. It’s not a vers/mast helm, but it’s close. The benefit is that if you do care about that crit and exclusively run M+ you can catalyst the helm and get a BiS tier helm, effectively.

And you still have the benefit of crafting rings to fill whatever secondaries you need to, and they have the benefit of coming with a socket, and flavor pocket

It’s just a quirk involved with getting the highest ilvl pieces possible from vault. If you were doing race to world first then you’d get whatever gave you the most immediate DPS gain, but there’s nothing wrong with taking it a little slower. Some vaults come with an opportunity cost, and you have to weigh each selection against the odds you will replace a piece you didn’t pick/would want now against pieces that you will very likely run five, six, etc weeks from now
