My motivation was to be able to play with a buddy so I was racing through regardless; but the story/gameplay/class expression of fun picked up in Heavensward, and a LOT in shadowbringers. Even though I lost my tank external Bard became a DPS mongo in shadowbringers.

That's the best way I can describe ARR, is it's the vanilla wow experience except they gave you real story telling and the focus is on that. The leveling and gameplay is a vessel to get you to the payoff at the end of the story.

Heavensward is easily worth every single hour and more of ARR

Nah, ARR story picks up once you leave the initial starting zone and then lays a lot of important groundwork. It slumps in the middle around the Leviathan thing and then really picks up steam and goes crazy after the Ultimate Weapon is introduced

Stormbloods trials are visually amazing; the..? whatever one where you fly up in the tidal wave and then like fight through the sky and all kinda' shit..and he's like a lightning fire tiger? that shit was legit. When you get to Shadowbringers ..by the end of it you will absolutely LOVE the villain.

The problem everyone likes to forget is how key ARR is in setting everything up. It's also just super overshadowed by the massive effort put into Heavensward and beyond

Don't want to spoil it for you but once the villain in shadowbringers is introduced ALL you are playing through that story for is to see his next cut scene; that dude steals the scenes he's in SO hard it's not even funny.

I really dislike how everyone tries to tell new players that they'll hate ARR and that the story sucks. So many people who I've talked to or watched play through ARR including myself end up really enjoying ARR for what it is and it genuinely is not a bad story.

Yeah but you have to temper that along side the giga-dogshit gameplay of ARR, how clunky and bland classes are for most of it and how looooong the story drags out. It might be an 'ok' story but set along side the other expacs it's dank trash.

Obviously I can't discount your experience with it; I'm glad you liked it. But for me it's "I'm darth vader..check out my mecha dragon..Oh noes..my elemental powerrrssss~" Compared to Papalimo (my bard was a taru..or whatever they were in FF14, in FF11 they were called Tarutaru's..I played one there too)

and? Yshtola's actually kinda' cool character arc and all the other stuff that just made heavensward+ make you just forget about bland ARR.

I had to force myself to just push through ARR; it was after that I began to agree with why people like the 'story' of FFxiv. The mechanical gameplay is solid but I cannot argue that WoW's movement is SO much cleaner and better...and the GCD delay makes wow feel like it plays better too. But there was something about the character movement in FF14 I always fealt WoW did better.

But yeah I think anyone who hasn't tried FF14 if they're into MMO's really should try it. There's a reason it's so successful; unless you like pvp..then uhh..maybe not.

And I'm not talking about "oh if ARR didn't happen then these expansions wouldn't exist" what I mean is that if ARR wasn't written or done in the way it was then it would not have allowed these other xpacs to be as good as they are story wise because the story threads wouldn't exist

I get what you're saying but there's no way around the fact that ARR is just the prologue; and it might start to ramp up into something ok towards the end? but as a whole it just fealt like a drawn out 'start' like instead of the entire vanilla year+ experience that could have been levels 1 to 30 or something. The snazzy stuff happens after that entire 'game', but it keeps going upward..Heavensward was good, stormblood was ? pretty good..then shadowbringers was really good. I almost want to get the new expac but after Shadowlands in WoW I'm done with mmo's for a bit.

If it weren't to the commitment to the guild I made at the start of Shadowlands I'd have already cancelled my WoW sub. If I was just playing mmo's for 'myself' for fun..I'd definitely get the new FF14 expac. But I'm burnt on mmo's.

Excluding the Heavensward stuff the actual ending of ARR and the post content that they did for ARR have huge payoffs
