Free healthcare, free food, insanely low loan rates (which btw you can use the loan again if you buy a house and move as long as you lived in the house for two years, which means you can rent out the house when you move), housing allowance which is based on the average mortgage of the area (which means the military is paying for your house if you buy one), laws that make any interest you had prior to joining be capped to 6% after joining etc.
So basically all the pay you do actually get is direct to your pocket without much if any bills so you can invest a lot/have a decent amount of fun money
Most of the super nice credit cards that have benefits like $400 in travel a year/uber allowance per month/entertainment extras all have their yearly fees waived for active duty
TLDR people who are poor in the U.S. military are just really irresponsible/bad with money
