Tell your group to not touch anything and to run all the way to the miniboss with you (like they should all go to melee, at least initially)
A lot of pugs will stop mid-platform (especially if ranged) and start casting and some of the mobs take forever to come in, so then those people are in the way and just get steamrolled
But it's kind of like the Mechagon first pull. Don't do it unless you won't time the key without doing it, because it doesn't have a very high success rate in pugs

For PUGs, I like to pull it up to just past the bridge, maybe grab the 1st caster on the right and get a ranged to kick it if that. Chain pull into mini.

If you're trying to do 1st pull all the way to 1st mini:
- Tclap at the end of group 1.
- Charge to group 2, Avatar + SB mid charge, hold Demo Shout. Thunderblast.
- Heroic Throw group 3. The social aggro on this pack is weird, and I sometimes just strafe up and thunderblast it with 2.
- Heroic Leap to group 4. Thunderblast.
- Heroic Throw group 5.
- Charge into group 6 (mini + casters). Use disrupting shout for first set of cast lockouts. Shockwave 2nd set of attendant casts. And hold your kick for the fear. If you run double shield wall you can shield wall charging into 6. If not, I would just send an early demo shout and hold wall for the gather to finish.

Usually 1 caster and the mini boss is fine in my experience but if I pull the first caster to the mini boss often times the other caster gets aggro'd and then it just goes very poorly

Defensive trinkets are generally pretty easy to identify as good or bad based on their effect and are only used if you need to use them

Why are sims unreliable?
Sims are reliable tools for optimizing DPS in particular scenarios and are useful data tools for such. For tanks and M+, sims are less useful for a myriad of reasons.
- you get rage from being hit.
- sim / stat weights will generally skew away from haste for damage, but you need a particular amount for SB uptime / rage gen
- sim will just execute / revenge ad infinitum in lieu of pooling / spending rage for mitigation

The answer to why x streamer uses anything is to ask x streamer. This happens a lot with Yoda and Kira, but we aren’t them and can’t speak for them

You should never trust sims blindly, but you should use them to be as informed as possible before making a decision. There are scenarios where what is best for you may not fit what the sim says. A great example is the recommendation to craft a shield before a weapon. Clearly not going to give you the highest dps, but knowledge of the spec tells you that shield is your biggest defensive gain from gear, so most of us would recommend crafting that first
Or as Fonkee alluded to, haste may not be your best stat for damage, but you may still need to prioritize it for survival

This. IP is not your main mitigation. It's mostly just there to give you an off-the-GCD way to not overcap on rage, which is the real thing you need to worry about
