Every time the game has to do something like check the status of a debuff (unit frames) or process a combat log event (details) or read a proc (weakauras) that is happening on your client. Your cpu is a big brain but much like our big brains, it can only process so fast. If you throw it massive amounts of small things to process then they pile up (cpu time) until eventually it cannot process them fast enough to keep up with how quickly they are being sent and gets overcome - which you experience as frame (moreso frame time) lag. Usually this looks like slowdown/hitching/jitter.

This is why fights with large amounts of events or debuffs (nexus king, dimensius) are far worse than simpler fights (plexus, araz). It’s also why dying mid encounter instantly sees your frames clear up (lots of unit info no longer flowing to your client) and why the x3d processors have a relatively huge impact on wow performance (the faster/large l3 cache alleviates this specific issue massively)

Now someone pin that so we can stop saying gpus are the problem
