I'm assuming it has to do with the targeting reticle part of Ravager. If you do [@player] before Ravager (which casts it at your feet), or [@cursor] (which casts it where your cursor is), it should work either way

The difference is that's a talent choice and not something we can swap literally every gcd
the damage difference is small enough now that i don't fault someone for not thinking about it while learning
but yknow, free damage is free damage, and if you're under no real threat why not take it

In an ideal world, if you're looking to play as optimally as possible, you would dance-stance as mentioned above. Staying in Battle Stance as much as possible without putting extra stress on your healer, and swapping to Defensive Stance when needed.
That said,staying in Defensive Stance 24/7 is not AS big of a DPS loss anymore.

Most factions have a decent item situated at renown 7-9, and in most cases you get there if you do the quests in a zone. Very little requires dedicated renown grinding after the quests.
The crystals are probably more of an issue.

You just go in and spam Demolish / Revenge and smack everything.
Once the content gets harder (m+ at any relevant level), MT will pull ahead as it's a better middle-ground between offensive and defensive value compared to Colossus.

But tldr is spear interacts better with thane cuz instant burst from TB
Colossus better with roar cuz of dmg amps from colossus that line up frequently with it
There's also the punto of colossus not playing unstoppable force so you get 1 extra talent point for attt
Whereas if you were to play roar on thane, you can't get both uproar + thunderous words + unstoppable force
