Howdy all. I re-installed WoW and joined some discords but I haven't resubbed yet. My friends were about to resub but they both bailed. The problem is I'm very much on the fence. I've played every tank spec in at least heroic raids and level 15 M+ keys. I tanked mythic raids in legion on prot pally, BFA on prot warrior, and Shadowlands on guardian druid and a little vdh.

My questions are more so about tanking in general in Dragonflight (especially in M+) rather than specifically prot warrior. If I were to start playing again, I'm not sure what tank I'd want to play, but prot is in the running.

1. How is the M+ pugging scene for tanks? I remember being able to at least get my +15s done in Shadowlands just by pugging, but I've heard that keys can deplete again now? Is that true? Either way, what's it like finding a group and successfully pushing keys on tank?

2. I heard they got rid of necrotic and made affixes more fun. I haven't looked into this too much, but can y'all share your personal opinions on the M+ affixes? I remember bolstering and the one that made you generate less aggro were really annoying to me as well, are those still a thing?

3. If I wanted to purely do M+ and maybe pug heroic raids, how much dps/surviability would I lose from the lack of max ilvl mythic raid set pieces? Would it make my ilvl "too trash" to get a solid M+ group or to stop me from pushing ~+20 keys?

1. If you're a weekly 20 gamer then pugging keys is not that hard as a tank, regardless of class
2. Bolstering exists, it just doesnt give health anymore as of df s2
3. If you are good enough, you can do 20's at 440 ilv - so you're more than fine without mythic raid

tanks are very powerful this season and you can do 20s without much gear. however you wont get invited to them at low ilvl

Deplete is just a word used to mean you didn't time the key. They don't actually deplete Legion-style.
Skittish and Necrotic don't exist. Bolstering does but it no longer increases health, only damage.
You can gear to mythic ilevel without raiding mythic via the great vault, and you can get pretty close with crafted gear (486 where Mythic is 489).

To clarify, keys go down 1 level if you fail to time them. But they don't turn gray and force you to run them for no reward to turn it back into a real key like you had to in Legion.

We've come a long way since then

1. M+ is very fine for tanks right now. Tank balance is in a good spot and you have a lot of control over the key and your own survivability in pugs up until very high keys

2. Theyve removed most of the affixes that were bad, even seasonal affixes, and focused on fewer affixes that feel punishing. Imo affixes are in an okay spot and generally feel pretty low-impact now. My only disliked affix is sanguine. Bolstering is still a thing but heavily nerfed (no hp gain and doesnt last permanently in combat)

3. Because of the great vault you can get mythic ilvl tier pieces through only doing m+. You also have the catalyst that makes it so you can convert non-tier items to tier pieces. So its very easy to get full tier set through only m+. With that said the current raid has weapons and trinkets youd want to get. But in general you will have the same ilvl as a mythic raider by doing m+
