The stones you put in the ring are upgradeable with items that jc can make, the gear you can get from the Forbidden reach starts at 385 and there is a knowledge drop that allows you to upgrade it to 395.

second, you can still sell it instead of using it
so if a recipe is worth for example 100k
even if you get it from drop, you are still 100k behind by not selling it (minus ah tax)
so with crafting from this recipe you still have to overcome this 100k deficit

The difference is in the timing - selling the actual product when supply is signficantly scarcer than demand makes money significantly faster, even if you include the opprotunity cost of not selling the recipe at the time. doubled down by the fact that the recipe can drop for you again, and you can just sell that. codex is sitting strong at like 650k still on my server

The main gripe is accessibility which does not care about whether you can buy it or not.
Generally speaking, it feels bad when there's only one main way of obtaining something pivotal in the game.
