#System crash while playing Diablo IV: Lord Of Hatred

Hi,

While playing the game, the system crashed completely and had to reboot and after rebooting, Windows freezes when I sign in...

I was able to enter safe mode and ran DISM commands, sfc /scannow, chkdsk c: /f /r to no avail.

I removed the display drivers using DDU one time and the AMD utility in another and after rebooting again, Windows was able to sign in and is running normally but if I try to install the latest Adrenalin Software and drivers, for some reason even though it was completely removed, it the AMD Crash Utility recognizes a previous driver crash. If I try to send the report the system feezes and if I don't the installation completes but after rebooting, system freezes again when I sign in.

For now I'm running a driver that Windows installed with version 31.0.22030.2, to be able to work but this driver is very limited and my monitor is not recognized and also there's a warning sign and says that there's a problem,

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

To help us assist you better, please upload a screenshot of the HWiNFO64 Summary screen. You can download the software from the following link: https://www.hwinfo.com/download

After downloading (Installer - Local US option), launch the software, select the Summary-only option from the dropdown menu, and then upload a screenshot of your system specifications.
(See example below.)

Hi,

Here's the screenshot

Hi,

Here's the new screenshot:

#

gotcha

#

try performing a clean driver install following the pinned guide in #tech-help

Hi,

Thx for the help but I've already done DDU but to be fair ddin't stop windows update from installing a driver.... I'll try again

Hi,

I've done it all, even ticked the Factory Reset option and it only freezes at 100% when installing the Adrenalin Software... no issues prior when is installing the drivers.

#

Any other thoughts?

grand path
#

is that a new GPU?

#

when did that start occuring?

leaden aspen
#

No... I've had it for almost 3 years and it was just this evening when I was playing Diablo IV when it crashed...

#

Had driver crashes but it seems to be the norm with Adrenalin but nothing this serious

grand path
#

post a screenshot of your windows settings -> windows update -> update history -> driver updates

#

also, disable any overclocks and tuning you may have applied currently, including AMD EXPO / DOCP (currently enabled)

leaden aspen
#

here's the new screenshot

#

but updates are suspended

#

At the moment Windows is using its generic driver

grand path
#

tried following the guide pinned in #tech-help to stop windows update from enforcing driver overrides?

leaden aspen
#

yes

#

I was thinking of installing only the drivers and not Adrenalin Software since it seems to be the part that is causing the system to freeze

grand path
#

have you tried installing 26.1.1?

leaden aspen
#

Actually no... I grabbed the latest drivers from AMD website, version 26.3.1

#

And those were also the ones I had installed

#

I'm going to download 26.1.1

grand path
#

please give that a try!

leaden aspen
#

Same issue…

System froze at 100% with version 26.1.1

grand path
#

take a screenshot of your control panel -> system and security -> power options -> choose what the power button does

Back after DDU

Don't mind me asking but I don't see the correlation between that option and the symptom but here's the screenshot:

leaden aspen
#

Actually it has been a few years but it has been updated/upgraded from windows updated...
If my memory serves me right I installed from a USB drive using Windows creation utility

grand path
#

what was it upgraded from?

leaden aspen
#

Windows 10

grand path
#

i think it'd be best to perform a clean windows 11 install

leaden aspen
#

Is it possible that something is wrong with the card that may be causing the isue?

grand path
#

no, if anything it looks like your windows is messed up.

#

dont use any "optimization" or "debloat" scripts and tools. they often remove core parts of the OS, which then results in problems like these.

leaden aspen
#

are there any registry entries that may be left by the Adrenalin Software that I may remove?

leaden aspen
grand path
#

no i think its really just a messed up windows install

#

give these commands a try, as admin in the terminal

#

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

sfc /scannow

#

post screenshots of the "answer" message you get once each of em is through

leaden aspen
#

If that was the case, I would have had this before and never happened... only with the new expansion of Diablo IV

grand path
#

yeah issues like that can creep up at the most random times

leaden aspen
#

para o /scanhealth:

#

para o /restorehealth

#

para o sfc /scannow

grand path
#

restart the PC and try installing 26.1.1 again

leaden aspen
#

same issue.... installed drivers only option but it seems to also install a part of the adrenalin software but it installs sucessfully even though on reboot it freezes and goes again. On reboot the issue arises again but something new...
I have a Plex server with windows which is monitored by Uptime Kuma which I have it setup to send me a Telegram notification whenever its status changes and weirdly enough I received a notnificiation that the server is up which also means that even though the image is frozen, Windows sign in correctly in the background

grand path
#

im pretty sure your windows is really messed up

#

the upgrade from 10 alone is bad enough to warrant a proper clean install pain5

leaden aspen
#

ok but since I made that upgrade several years ago and this is the third GPU on my system since then...

grand path
#

even more reasons

#

😅

leaden aspen
#

I think I found the issue even though I still have to verify.. I have Powertoys installed and the new version has a new function called "Power Display" which seems not to play well with RDNA3 cards

leaden aspen
#

@grand path after messing with regedit to remove windows video profiles, disabling fast boot in windows and BIOS, resize bar in BIOS and changing the PCI-e 16x to gen3, disabled Freesync Premium Pro on my monitor, change DP cable to another port, shutdown the PC and removed the power cable and pressed the power button for 30 seconds to remove power from the capacitors. After all this I was able to install the 26.1.1. drivers without adrenalin

#

ok it was a "pain in the @ss" but it would be even more if I had to reinstall Windows from scratch

#

I'm going to re-enable everything, one at a time leaving resizable bar for the last after updating the drivers to the latest version with Adrenalin to see if everything is alright

#

Ah.. I forgot to mention that I also uninstalled Microsoft Powertoys since the 0.99 may caused the "panic" that led to everything or not but will test it

leaden aspen
#

I will try to put it back as it was pre-crash but that is something for tomorrow or another day.. I'll keep ypu posted... Thx for everything @grand path 😀

#

considering the wide variety of a mess of things done, at this point a windows clean install is DEFINITELY needed.

leaden aspen
#

@haughty needle probably yes but the card is still under its 3 year warranty and reinstalling Windows to find out that the card has an issue, would be even worse because I would loose even more time to put the system as I want with all the software and its settings. So, a clean install is always the last resort that I'll ever use.
