#Idle power usage

Me and you.
Idle power usage
You've helped me before.
Sooo, I found out what's the cause of it.
I do not know how to explain it, but I'll do my best.
It did not get fixed btw
So in AMD Adrenalin acts like VRAM Clock Speed is at 0, but power usage & temps are elevated. Which does not seem right, so I went and opened hwinfo64 and here I found that:
Elevated memory wattage while idle + the VRAM clock speed is stucked completely, and it's not even moving - like it's gray.
Also another issue is that, my GPU is rated for VRAM clock speed about 1750mhz, it goes above that - as you can see it went up to 2,208MHz - but I have never overclocked my GPU.
These all connect together so perfect, that I just now need help from experienced staff.
Temporary workaround: turning off and on my display, enabling/disabling freesync
but after a few minutes it's back, I tried differnent ports, differnent cables, using stock display settings.
This behaviour is likely part of the "deep sleep" mode that the GPU has, or even BACO (Bus Active, Chip Off) if your computer is that idle and nothing is happening on screen
This is normal boost behaviour, and shouldn't be worried about
Ye, but it's locked still... even while playing
Also, while I am "staff" on this server, I am not an AMD employee. Only red-names with "AMD" in the name are employees, the rest of us are volunteers.
it's not moving
Innnnteresting. This may be a driver bug, or a HWINFO64 bug, not sure which.
My bad, I hope I am not bothering you at all.
Even HW Monitor
Not at all, I do enjoy helping people when time allows ;3
Not at the moment, still nibbling brekkie, then I need to do some chores around the house
Ahh ic.
Anyway so if I started playing / or streaming on Discord it should change the VRAM clock speed value right?
because if yes, then sadly no
No matter what I do it no longer updates, and wattage stays like that forever
Yes. Activating the encoder should bring the memory speed up to probably half of its max speed (if the PC is at complete idle the rest of the time)
All softwares show like memory is dead
Aside from Adrenalin and HWINFO64, do you have any other programs that monitor hardware, like MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z, ASUS Armoury Crate, MSI or Gigabyte's own equivalents of Armoury crate, etc?
Nope.
Should I try MSI afterburner and see?
And it all goes to normal as soon as I disable/enable freesync - turn off/on monitor
That's so weird, right?
Nah, I wouldn't no
Which driver package is this on right now?
Latest rn
24.5.1 started doing the same.
Also, don't change drivers from whichever one you're on, I'll see if anyone can repro it.
So 24.4.1 and earlier work normally, and 24.5.1 is where things went wonky?
yup
I do have MPO disabled also.
Might that be also the cause?
And this is an... RX 7600 you said?
6600
By the way, make them try streaming / watching stream on Discord if it bugs like that.
If you're running single-monitor, possibly. Disabling MPO isn't necessary anymore. It was a workaround for a few very specific issues that were fixed long ago
Oh, wait.
I do know that I was running MPO disabled since 24.5.1
I hope it aint that 💀
I will be SO SO SORRY for wasting time of y'all.
Go enable MPO (nuke the registry key that disables it), restart, and see what's up
And no worries. My friend, I have caused MUCH stupider issues by my own hand, you are fine if this is all it is <3
😄
Thank you so much, give me a moment.
So also I should not be worried about memory clock going up sometimes to above the rated value right?
I never overclock my stuff, I am worried.
I believe that this is normal too
I think
My friends with same GPU never go above 🤷 but I will see.
Rebooting my PC, just deleted the entry.
Aight, I am gonna try and reproduce it.
No rush
Yeah, I'll let you know as soon as possible.
Seems fine now, I'll keep streaming for another like 3-4 hours... I'll tell you before I go sleep if it happend or no.
Sadly @vale solstice still happening.
Also noticed one thing, when it does that it kinda bugs freesync completely - when I go inside Settings > Display and I disable Freesync while this happend it'll like completely lag for 2-3 seconds.
Seems like Freesync just stucks.
I can not seem to replicate it, it's so random.
I am trying to find the root cause.
All I know is that
Always when it happens and I try disabling freesync it like completely lags out the display.
Does it matter if I reinstalled the drivers while MPO was off?
On the video I am just going to send you'll see exactly what I mean
Grey values in sensors window mean HWiNFO is unable to read a valid value from the sensor.
Which means, I somehow crash it 🤷
I will try to confirm it's caused by Freesync itself by disabling freesync and running 120Hz
@vale solstice Good and bad news, good thing is that I seem to have replicated it and the bad thing is that it's probably just caused by Freesync + with Discord stream enabled.
I tried differnent refresh rates, all did the same.
Okay, thanks for sleuthing that out. Do you mind submitting another bug report and mention that it is a follow up to your earlier one
I did not file the report yet, as I wanted to make sure it aint a me being dummy.
I'll do it soon tho, rn testing if disabling freesync for Discord itself fixes it
Thanks!
Sadly I do not think I can directly disable freesync for Discord.
Id have to try gaming and doing stuff without Discord on to confirm
I can play games no issues while calling on Discord, but as soon as I start watching stream or streaming it goes down.
Isn't it also strange that my other friends don't have such issues?
@vale solstice I have just sent out the Bug Report, I am going to try 24.4.1 right now and see if it fixes, if not then it must be a Discord issue but hopefully you guys will manage to fix it.
I am not an AMD employee, just a PC technician by hobby and trade who volunteers here :3
But yes, hopefully AMD can sort things out in the future
I was just letting you know. As soon as I try 24.4.1 we can close this.
Isnt it odd that my friends with basically same setup have no such issues?
Sadly even 24.4.1 so I am going back to 24.7.1 and will try running my PC without Discord, if it happens then I am going to disable Freesync and see.
You can close that thread. Sorry for wasting ur time.
No time wasted at all, you're good!
I've got worse news, seems to be global. It just happend while being only on youtube and downloading game.
I got no idea what to do, it was never happening to me before - and my gpu jsut keeps working with no issues except that.
So, to recap, the GPU power usage is sticking at 15W instead of like 8W at idle, correct?
- VRAM sensor get's stucked - AMD shows 0 and hwinfo can not read it
- Idle wattage is like +10W instead of 3-4W
- The GPU memory alone is using +6W while doing nothing.
Ah right the VRAM sensor. So even when you go play a game after it gets stuck, both Adrenalin and HWINFO64 still show 0 for the VRAM clock?
Yeah.
Even when I go stream on Discord right now, it's still unable to read.
Until I refresh the driver.
Oh right it goes blank in HWINFO64
Yup.
You putting in the bug report should give AMD everything they need.
I mean it must be something else, if even 24.4.1 is doing it.
No matter what I do it just bugs out anyway, sometimes in a longer time sometimes not. My system does not crash or anything like that, a way to fix it is turn off and back on the display or reenable Freesync or just like refresh the driver.
I bet you've seen the video I sent, the lag while Freesync is being disabled but as soon as its refreshed and back to normal it is no longer lagging while disabling Freesync.
I've stress tested and tested all my components, everything seems fine.
Do I report it via the Bug Report Tool?
Yes please
Nah, but send another one, it's fine :3
Drivers are usually telling what is the VRAM usage etc right?
It's almost certainly a bug in the drivers, looking at your symptoms
Can like latest drivers break it for even previous ones?
That shouldn't be how it works, no. The drivers are supposed to be reading the sensors on the GPU.
Well then it shouldn't be the drivers? 🤷
I have always used AMD Cleanup Utility before installing old ones.
24.1.1, 24.4.1, 24.5.1, 24.7.1 - all same issue now
The drivers are also partly responsible for how Windows itself accesses and reads those sensors, too. If you've ever had HWINFO64 pop up when you're between driver installs (when there's no driver installed at all), about 2/3 of the total GPU sensors will be missing.
I'll just update all my drivers and do WIndows Update and I will see.
So when I say this, look at it as: there may be a driver issue going on that only reproduces with your hardware combination, and since nobody else has reproduced/reported the issue your problem is just "there" and it won't go away until AMD figures out what's going wrong and fixes it.
Could bios play role in this?
Probably not
What if the issue wont get replicated by AMD itself?
Reseated everything, flashed back BIOS and it's still doing it. I guess I am hugely borked.
I do not really understand why is it even now in the old versions of drivers.
I tried running even 23.12.1 where I NEVER had this issue and it's still doing it.
I guess you can close this thread.
It would be funny if it was my cable the whole time
@vale solstice Aight, close this. It is no longer needed, I have confirmed by myself that it is caused by Freesync itself, once it happens all you gotta do is like refresh freesync and it'll become normal again.
