@gritty bloom

gritty bloom
#

perfect. im not well versedwith the full capabilities of discord.

#

going to get some numbers here and ss some things

oak quarry
#

I barely know what I'm doing either. Joke's on AMD for making me a moderator :P

gritty bloom
#

hahahaha i love amd just hate my loop haha

#

i feel it is a corsair issue more than anything or possibly something clogging my loop but it seems fairly free flowing when i can see the flow

oak quarry
#

Pump is probably fine. When it revs up when you power on your system, does it sound like it's struggling, or is it a nice, linear rev up to full speed?

gritty bloom
#

Ibalso feel having a rad in the bottom doesnt help.

oak quarry
#

Also my project PC that the loop is in right now (my daily driver is all air)

oak quarry
#

Not as much as you'd think it does, anyway

gritty bloom
#

Makes sense I just feel it restricts airflow but likely not like I think it does

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

No weird noise eiehte

#

Either

oak quarry
#

So, one possible reason your temps are so high is that the CPU block you have has the same issue that AIO's have: The water stream comes down into the center, and then splits off in both directions evenly. Since the CCD's are off-center in AMD CPU's, it's basically only getting half of the water flow that it might otherwise with a different block.

Picture is what it looks like under the heat spreader

gritty bloom
#

Oh man so maybe redirecting the cpu block might be a something to try

oak quarry
#

Even when I had my 5800x and 5800X3D under water, they were still pretty spicy. I was using the TechN AM4 block, which is specifically designed to put the incoming water into the core CCD.

I have the one on the left

gritty bloom
#

Like rotating 90 degrees or something so water flow is over the things are off center?

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

Oh that makes sense

#

I was considering buying new optimus block but feel likely a waste because it is likely some other issue

oak quarry
#

Optimus... hah. They are the best, but they also know they're the best.

#

There's... other options :P

gritty bloom
gritty bloom
#

okay so havent crashed yet. have been sitting between 75-80c at ultra maxed settings. not sure if the update they did changed things

oak quarry
#

Do you have anything monitoring your water temperature?

gritty bloom
#

i thought i had a temp proibe in the pump res combo

#

not seeing the readings though so likely now

#

not

oak quarry
#

So do you have your radiator and case fans increase speed when you play games?

gritty bloom
#

noipe just stay on the same speed

oak quarry
#

1200rpm aint going to do it with your CPU and GPU dumping a collective 400W into your loop :P

#

hmmm

#

Do you have an IR thermometer or something else portable that can read temperature?

gritty bloom
#

here is my icue and argus monitor

#

this is me sitting idle in the game

oak quarry
#

Okay, GPU and hotspot temp look good. What game are you running, again?

gritty bloom
#

first decendent

#

new free to play game

#

reminds me of destiny

oak quarry
#

Haha, first google search for that game is a thread of laptop users who say the game is trying to melt their chassis :P

#

Also wait, you have a Corsair Commander Pro. It comes with thermal probes. You can do the poor-man's water temp trick and just affix one of the thermal probes either in the fins of your radiator, or on top of it so that your top exhaust air goes by the thermal probe

gritty bloom
#

okay that might makmore sense it being the game and not my pc

oak quarry
#

Aye, I think it's the game 100%

#

Thread after thread of hot PC's with that game

gritty bloom
oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

i actually have commander pros in my loop haha

oak quarry
#

You could, but I bet you it's fine tbh.

gritty bloom
#

now im rethinking the need to switch back to air cooling

oak quarry
#

If you want

gritty bloom
#

yeah 100% one minute

#

okay i should be ready

oak quarry
#

Oh uh, shoot that was quick. Dinner just got here, I'll be back in a bit

gritty bloom
#

no rush at all i have prints to check on

#

seriously enjoy your food and do NOT rush for this

oak quarry
#

Okay, burger has been conquered

gritty bloom
#

hahaha nice

oak quarry
#

Okay, download the Prime95 Windows 64-bit version. I'll tell you how yo use it in a second

gritty bloom
#

i changed around the fan setting on the rads while gaming and it brought overall temps in the case to 70 avg cpu peak 75 while gaing

#

downloading now

#

granted now my pc sounds like a jet engine haha

#

extracting. setting the kiddo up with paw patrol brb

oak quarry
#
  • The first time you run it, close the "Run a torture test" and/or hit "just stress testing" to get rid of the main popups, don't start any tests yet
  • Under Options, make sure "No Icon" is the only thing that is checked; un-check the other two options at the bottom
  • Click the Test menu, and select "Exit"
  • Make sure that there is no tray icon left behind after you select "Exit". If there is, right click it and close it
gritty bloom
oak quarry
#
  • On the "Run a torture test" screen, Check "Disable" on EVERY SINGLE AVX option at the bottom, until they are ALL checked. Disable AVX every single time
  • Go ahead and pull up your temp monitoring software
  • Select Small FFT
  • Hit "ok" and it will launch the test.

I'm curious to see if your CPU makes it all the way up to 90C right away

#

Once the test is started, you can hit "Esc" at any time and hit "ok" to stop the tests

gritty bloom
#

should i close everything else on my pc before doing this?

#

also how long does this take so i can plan how long to not use my pc

oak quarry
#

It'll run however long we let it. And for Small FFT, you don't have to close everything, but I wouldn't have any games open

#

And any work you'd need to save, I would save it and close the program

#

Browsers are fine tho

gritty bloom
#

okay awesome going to close my 3d printing slicer and whatnot

gritty bloom
#

so what are we looking for with this test?

#

im about to start it

oak quarry
#

Looking for hot lava

#

Just let me know your CPU temp once it's running

gritty bloom
#

84c

oak quarry
#

Give it a minute or so and let it heat-soak

gritty bloom
#

okay im going to set up paw patrol and then see where we are

oak quarry
#

Oh yeah it'll be fine, go for it

gritty bloom
oak quarry
#

Nice. Did you set a manual max CPU temp in your bios?

gritty bloom
#

not that i know of

#

should i keep this thing going?

oak quarry
#

You can stop the tests, then exit. You're good

oak quarry
#

So, look at your CPU temps this way: You didn't even get above 90C on one of the hardest tests that your CPU will ever do. Sure, you probably have power and current limits still in place, but still, I think your loop is okay

#

As for your case fans, the easiest way to do this with a Corsair Commander, if you don't have a thermal probe for your loop, is to take one of the thermal probes, and put it in the warm airflow of one of your radiators, and then base the fan curve off of that.

gritty bloom
#

okay so it isnt the loop

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

okay well then it is for sure the game then and them having issues and it being too intense for some systems

#

you have put my mind at ease there.

oak quarry
#

Yeah 80C in a game is high, especially knowing that Prime95 only gets you up to 84C

gritty bloom
#

i was like WTF IS GOING ON!!!! my system should be able to play this damn thins

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

80 ws admittedly with a bs fan profile

oak quarry
#

But the "temp sensor in front of a rad" works too

gritty bloom
#

i have a water temp probe for the corsiar pump res thing

#

mauby i will install that next time i tear it down

oak quarry
#

Yeah next time you drain the loop, I'd install it

gritty bloom
#

i have a cpu air cooler on the way maybe i will just return it instead

#

i really appreciate all your help for helping put my mind at ease

#

im still tempted to change the thermal paste on the cpu but i also feel sometime best to just leave it alone

oak quarry
#

"If it aint broke"

gritty bloom
#

maybe at least some fresh coolant

#

been 3 years on this round haha

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

well i wont keep you tied up any longer im going to hold off on going back to air for now until i have more signs of a bad loop

oak quarry
#

(Link goes to timestamp)

gritty bloom
#

hahahahahahahaha

oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

yeah it is in real need of help

oak quarry
#

I know you don't have as much free time with the Kiddo, but if nothing else, a drain and flush or three with distilled water wouldn't be out of order, and then new coolant

gritty bloom
#

i just dont have the time to do a deep clean like that right now with the business popping off

#

i will for sure do the distilled flush

#

then pick up some more ek coolant

oak quarry
#

We use the concentrate + distilled, but their premix is the same too

gritty bloom
oak quarry
gritty bloom
#

im also thinking about building a "work/3d printing" pc and leave this one just for gaming

gritty bloom
oak quarry
#

A NUC or an old "Dell Poopbox" from ebay or something would make a good little workstation.

#

And yes, eventually I would separate work and home gear, just for work's uptime's sake

gritty bloom
#

100% would be nice to have a 3d printing pc just in that room. a lot less back and forth

gritty bloom
#

Dumb question. Can I use my pc when I am doing the distilled flush. I'm reading online to basically have the pump run for 30-60 min per run and empty and repeat. They say to use a jumper. Thoughts?

oak quarry
#

Yeah it's fine :3

#

You just don't want to run it with just distilled water for days/weeks is all

gritty bloom
#

okay awesome im going to pick some up tongiht. thank you for all your help. played again last night with the new fan profile and didnt go over 70c

oak quarry
#

Excellent!
