#Possible open loop performance issues
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
perfect. im not well versedwith the full capabilities of discord.
going to get some numbers here and ss some things
I barely know what I'm doing either. Joke's on AMD for making me a moderator :P
hahahaha i love amd just hate my loop haha
i feel it is a corsair issue more than anything or possibly something clogging my loop but it seems fairly free flowing when i can see the flow
Pump is probably fine. When it revs up when you power on your system, does it sound like it's struggling, or is it a nice, linear rev up to full speed?
Ibalso feel having a rad in the bottom doesnt help.
Also my project PC that the loop is in right now (my daily driver is all air)
Nah in an open loop that doesn't matter
Not as much as you'd think it does, anyway
Makes sense I just feel it restricts airflow but likely not like I think it does
Seems fairly even
naw you are 100% fine :3
Good good
So, one possible reason your temps are so high is that the CPU block you have has the same issue that AIO's have: The water stream comes down into the center, and then splits off in both directions evenly. Since the CCD's are off-center in AMD CPU's, it's basically only getting half of the water flow that it might otherwise with a different block.
Picture is what it looks like under the heat spreader
Oh man so maybe redirecting the cpu block might be a something to try
Even when I had my 5800x and 5800X3D under water, they were still pretty spicy. I was using the TechN AM4 block, which is specifically designed to put the incoming water into the core CCD.
I have the one on the left
Like rotating 90 degrees or something so water flow is over the things are off center?
Eh, like I said, 80C is fine, I'm just trying to help you explain the higher temps is all
Oh that makes sense
I was considering buying new optimus block but feel likely a waste because it is likely some other issue
Optimus... hah. They are the best, but they also know they're the best.
There's... other options :P
Yeah for sure are others.
okay so havent crashed yet. have been sitting between 75-80c at ultra maxed settings. not sure if the update they did changed things
Do you have anything monitoring your water temperature?
i thought i had a temp proibe in the pump res combo
not seeing the readings though so likely now
not
So do you have your radiator and case fans increase speed when you play games?
noipe just stay on the same speed
1200rpm aint going to do it with your CPU and GPU dumping a collective 400W into your loop :P
hmmm
Do you have an IR thermometer or something else portable that can read temperature?
Okay, GPU and hotspot temp look good. What game are you running, again?
Haha, first google search for that game is a thread of laptop users who say the game is trying to melt their chassis :P
Also wait, you have a Corsair Commander Pro. It comes with thermal probes. You can do the poor-man's water temp trick and just affix one of the thermal probes either in the fins of your radiator, or on top of it so that your top exhaust air goes by the thermal probe
okay that might makmore sense it being the game and not my pc
yeah i just located the probes actually haha in my bin of cords that i have no idea what they go to haha
I've had and use 2 commander pros for different systems over the years; awesome little dudes.
okay that puts me more at ease that it aint my pc. maybe i should reaspply thermal paste and all that add see how things are then
i actually have commander pros in my loop haha
You could, but I bet you it's fine tbh.
now im rethinking the need to switch back to air cooling
There's some things I can have you run to see if your CPU and/or paste-job is okay. Your GPU seems okay, but we'll test that too to make sure your hotpsot doesn't run away under load
If you want
Oh uh, shoot that was quick. Dinner just got here, I'll be back in a bit
no rush at all i have prints to check on
seriously enjoy your food and do NOT rush for this
I only know fast food
Okay, burger has been conquered
hahaha nice
Okay, download the Prime95 Windows 64-bit version. I'll tell you how yo use it in a second
GIMPS has free software available for Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OSX. Contribute to the effort by using your computer's spare processing power.
i changed around the fan setting on the rads while gaming and it brought overall temps in the case to 70 avg cpu peak 75 while gaing
downloading now
granted now my pc sounds like a jet engine haha
extracting. setting the kiddo up with paw patrol brb
- The first time you run it, close the "Run a torture test" and/or hit "just stress testing" to get rid of the main popups, don't start any tests yet
- Under Options, make sure "No Icon" is the only thing that is checked; un-check the other two options at the bottom
- Click the Test menu, and select "Exit"
- Make sure that there is no tray icon left behind after you select "Exit". If there is, right click it and close it
So, the second time you open it...
- On the "Run a torture test" screen, Check "Disable" on EVERY SINGLE AVX option at the bottom, until they are ALL checked. Disable AVX every single time
- Go ahead and pull up your temp monitoring software
- Select Small FFT
- Hit "ok" and it will launch the test.
I'm curious to see if your CPU makes it all the way up to 90C right away
Once the test is started, you can hit "Esc" at any time and hit "ok" to stop the tests
should i close everything else on my pc before doing this?
also how long does this take so i can plan how long to not use my pc
It'll run however long we let it. And for Small FFT, you don't have to close everything, but I wouldn't have any games open
And any work you'd need to save, I would save it and close the program
Browsers are fine tho
okay awesome going to close my 3d printing slicer and whatnot
Yes for sure
84c
Give it a minute or so and let it heat-soak
Oh yeah it'll be fine, go for it
Nice. Did you set a manual max CPU temp in your bios?
You can stop the tests, then exit. You're good
If you don't remember, you probably didn't
So, look at your CPU temps this way: You didn't even get above 90C on one of the hardest tests that your CPU will ever do. Sure, you probably have power and current limits still in place, but still, I think your loop is okay
As for your case fans, the easiest way to do this with a Corsair Commander, if you don't have a thermal probe for your loop, is to take one of the thermal probes, and put it in the warm airflow of one of your radiators, and then base the fan curve off of that.
based on what we've seen so far, your loop seems fine :3
okay well then it is for sure the game then and them having issues and it being too intense for some systems
you have put my mind at ease there.
Yeah 80C in a game is high, especially knowing that Prime95 only gets you up to 84C
i was like WTF IS GOING ON!!!! my system should be able to play this damn thins
If you ever drain your loop, they make thermal senors for water loops. I have the black version of this Bitspower plugged into the back of my reservoir https://shop.bitspower.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=865
G1/4
80 ws admittedly with a bs fan profile
But the "temp sensor in front of a rad" works too
i have a water temp probe for the corsiar pump res thing
mauby i will install that next time i tear it down
Yeah next time you drain the loop, I'd install it
i have a cpu air cooler on the way maybe i will just return it instead
i really appreciate all your help for helping put my mind at ease
im still tempted to change the thermal paste on the cpu but i also feel sometime best to just leave it alone
"If it aint broke"
This is my duress phrase, by the way
This is more my speed: https://youtu.be/WSxEGgrvhMM?t=47
Teardown Tuesday.
What's inside an office photocopier? Dave only needs a screwdriver to find out...
well i wont keep you tied up any longer im going to hold off on going back to air for now until i have more signs of a bad loop
(Link goes to timestamp)
hahahahahahahaha
Oh wow hehe. I do this about once every year or year and a half, back when I was daily-driving water
yeah it is in real need of help
I know you don't have as much free time with the Kiddo, but if nothing else, a drain and flush or three with distilled water wouldn't be out of order, and then new coolant
i just dont have the time to do a deep clean like that right now with the business popping off
i will for sure do the distilled flush
then pick up some more ek coolant
We use the concentrate + distilled, but their premix is the same too
how long does this take you?
"Never ask a question, that you're not prepared to hear the answer to"

im also thinking about building a "work/3d printing" pc and leave this one just for gaming
way too long... got it haha
A NUC or an old "Dell Poopbox" from ebay or something would make a good little workstation.
And yes, eventually I would separate work and home gear, just for work's uptime's sake
100% would be nice to have a 3d printing pc just in that room. a lot less back and forth
Dumb question. Can I use my pc when I am doing the distilled flush. I'm reading online to basically have the pump run for 30-60 min per run and empty and repeat. They say to use a jumper. Thoughts?
Yeah it's fine :3
You just don't want to run it with just distilled water for days/weeks is all
okay awesome im going to pick some up tongiht. thank you for all your help. played again last night with the new fan profile and didnt go over 70c
Excellent!
