Yeah they are pushovers if you stick your ground (Assuming you have enough spears to stun lock them or at least do enough damage to scare them away)
King Vulture's harpoons can be trickier but besides that it's mostly the same

Don't worry too much about progressing, just focus on learning how to survive and more importantly thrive in the area you're in
Experiment with movement, note food spawns, get more ambitious with combat
If you feel ready, just go through a gate and do the same thing again
