"Hey Kimo, how many more ratchet straps did you bring?"

#

Yuo ever worked aboard a ship lol?

sick sleet

and once it is up there, its fucking heavy enough to stay. šŸ˜„

dawn quartz

Everything you do on the ocean is much more dangerous and time consuming

sick sleet
# dawn quartz Yuo ever worked aboard a ship lol?

no. but had an office right next to Hamburg harbor for years. as in, if i dropped out the window, and made it more than 2m away from the wall during the four floors down, i would have ended up in the harbor basin. you get to see a lot of wacky ship antics that way.

dawn quartz
#

Point being, that process you described takes a tremendous amount of human work hours and it's not an every day operation.

sick sleet
dawn quartz

And that isn't a typical load

#

Even stopping a ship that size take planning lol

sick sleet
dawn quartz

Yes, and to suggest the largest vessel of it's kind just pulls in, sinks, and grabs the load is absurd lol

(and jfc. i am getting roasted by a single anklebiter about the BOJO "frontlines" photo op thing. bloody hell? its a) BOJO, b) a photo-op 2500km from kiev being called "on the frontlines", which c) makes it a reasonable 90%+ default to assume everything else said in that context was lies too...)

#

and tbqfh, it doesnt take (b) there. (a) leading straight to (c).

dawn quartz

Seems to me that if one takes an oath to public office, lying under that context should be perjury at the very least.

i like how a lot of companies decided "ok, lets do this, we dont need a UN resolution for it". in comparison, just to shit on BOJO some more ... the UK is blocking RU airlines. which means RU oligarchs with private planes are still welcome. well, yeah, they own like half of london, so...

BP: British oil company BP is the largest foreign investor in Russia with a 19.75% stake in the country's national oil company Rosneft. It also holds stakes in several other oil and gas projects in Russia.

Danone: The French yogurt maker Danone controls Russian dairy brand Prostokvanhino and gets 6% of total sales from the country.

ExxonMobil: The American oil giant has more than 1,000 employees in Russia, and has been in the country for over 25 years.

#

French volunteers are organizing care packages for refugees

#

Ukraine soldiers are wearing 3 ply masks.

#

Which is good

#

Well I suppose it depends.

#

With all the new science and disagreements

sick sleet
#

it matters if you intend to come home.

#

wrt french ... the french authorized ukrainian members of their foreign legion to go home. and take their whole equipment with them.

#

that would have me slightly worried as a green/conscript russian. šŸ˜„

#

at pretty much the same time, the ukrainians announced they are establishing a foreign legion.

#

if the french FL urkainians build the core of that one, the russians are doomed. šŸ˜…

deep saddle
#

Ah yea.

sick sleet
#

as someone put it on reddit ... "You know, individually all of these things are small. But they really add up to one giant Fuck Russia when you put them all together."

#

(which is wrong. its "fuck Putin". with an additional "a" if you are french.)

dawn quartz
sick sleet
#

(there is resonable disagreement about percentages, which is related to situation and mask quality.)

dawn quartz
#

No medical intervention is 100% so that's a red herring

sick sleet
#

exactly.

#

if you take three measures that each are only 80% effective, overall you are still at 99%+ ... the swiss-cheese strategy.

dawn quartz
#

I was doing some napkin math just for kicks a while back.
If the hydrogen sulfide molecule (egg farts) was the size of a tennis ball, the Covid virus would roughly have a diameter the length of a football field.

#

That people were using smells as some kind of proof that a given mesh cant stop a virus is funny in that respect

sick sleet
#

and with filters, "size is less important than how you use it". very much.

dawn quartz
#

To a degree.
You can certainly make things useless

deep saddle
#

And type.

sick sleet
#

even on the purely mechanical level, there is that concept of "mean free path". because even a particle much smaller than a filter "opening" has to navigate a labyrinth of filter fibers. and in general wont make it.

deep saddle
#

But there is more disagreement on masking mandates than actual masks l

#

I.e. politic

#

And how you use it. And everything. Like most people don't get custom fitted to n95

sick sleet
#

and most masks go well beyond the mechanical level. melt-blown masks have a "static charge" thing going on, which drastically reduces the mean free path inside beyond the purely mechanic.

dawn quartz
#

There's a rational argument for medical autonomy, but our lives are constant compromises of personal liberties and public well being.
Public health has long outweighed those liberties that said.

there was an awesome case diagram from korea this month. they have few enough cases that they actually still can do case tracking. and when comparing it to whats going on locally, it was "i facepalmed so hard i got a concussion".

dawn quartz

How so?

sick sleet
#

germany has been running on a mantra of "schools/kindergartens are not a pandemic vector" and "its harmless for children" ... but ... it turns out, these children go home. and there are entirely able to infect their relatives.

#

and that korean chain map showed that quite clearly. single imported index case, carried into a kindergarten, and spreading like wildfire from there.

dawn quartz

Ah, yeah,
Kids are often filthy after all lol

dawn quartz
#

It's always interesting to see stuff like that.
You can clearly see how relatively few people were responsible for most of the spread.

deep saddle
#

Lol like the October expedition.

#

Tho I got a worm egg. So I don't wanna use it if I got a pet

sick sleet
#

(if you have worms that size, you got other problems than masks...)

dawn quartz
#

Haha yes, 10/10 thumbnail

deep saddle
#

Depends on what you mean by a giant worm?and that gives me dune vibes.

dawn quartz
#

But that article is the most thorough piece on the Ivermectin data Ive seen, by a long shot

#

And the author is fair.

sick sleet
#

thing is ... no single measure is going to be 100%. and that just means we stack a bunch of them. in particular the easy ones.

#

and masks are pretty friggen easy if you are not a petulant child about it.

#

wait. thats unfair. children are actualy quite reasonable about masks afaict.

dawn quartz
#

Right, and those are exactly the kinds of things you want to weigh when deciding on a medical intervention.
They are cheap, effective, don't need specialized training in the gen pop, and generally readily available.
Yet people would rather take an untested dewormer.

Better than Zdogg?

#

My allergist has me reading the new england medical journal regularly. But I go to other sources also.

dawn quartz
#

I like Zdogg in general but this is much more academic oriented

sick sleet
dawn quartz
#

If you're reading journals, you'll want to focus on meta analyses/systematic reviews.

#

Individual studies are relatively weak by comparison

sick sleet
#

and while that is certainly not a pleasant experience at all, you probably would know before, will survive without damage, and ... thats still fscking rare? like super-super rare. in particular to have a major relevant allergy and not know about it.

deep saddle
#

So I just got the pneumo Vax last summer. My allergist had an interesting idea for helping with my chronic sinusitis. I had the coughing congestion type of symptoms for 4 or 5 years. Really went downhill with allergies and acid reflux. The Vax with bloodwork before and after showed my body does really well at gaining all the proper antibodies from vaccines. Which doubled my confidence.

I had strep way too often growing up so I had a handful of antibodies already

yeah, but also one that ... doesnt break a deal on its own? you can get by with a lot of guessing and handwaving if the involved parties want to make things work.

deep saddle
#

True.

#

But I dabble in CNN but I barely watch it compared to the old days before I became more invested in independent news and podcasts and self awareness. I take everything I read and hear with a grain of salt as much as I can and do my best to vette it.
But you could literally spend all day every day vetting stuff if you really wanted to.

#

And occasionally I stream French culture news to attempt to to not lose anymore of my vocabulary and language skill development.

#

Like I was listening to France 24 during dinner. To see how much I retained

#

Language is like a muscle you need to workout

sick sleet

i am first and foremost a nerd. which means i am curious about pretty much anything. but (and thats something some people are missing) also means i can defer to people who clearly know more about some topic than me, without me second-guessing them based on half-understood whatevers.

deep saddle
#

Yea deferring isn't something everyone has the emotional capacity to do.

dawn quartz
deep saddle
#

I'm a deep thinker. I question everything and ponder why things work the way they do. And in college I discovered a passion not only for diversity and science or human rights, but social patterns and behaviors through history. And I spend a lot of time studying psychology given my own ptsd and family.
I lost track of how many different subjects we got to learn about in college. And I've spent time in the last 2 years learning more medical and virology stuff and understand DNA better and such. And my primary care is thrilled to hear I'm invested now in better understanding medicine and it's connection to my own health and patterns of thought and behavior in society.

#

Sorry. That was long winded. I'm a talker.

A lot of you are just intellectually on a whole different level than me and with way more knowledge that goes deeper on a variety of subjects. That is something I aspire to continue towards.

sick sleet

@deep saddle did you see the posts by powerdns bert about mrna? that was like very, very epic for me. but also more a "hey, cool to know" than "i now feel entitled to make my own decisions based on this" thing.

dawn quartz

deep saddle

Yea. Thanks I saved it to read another day

dawn quartz
#

As it relates to the current situation, misinformation/propaganda has always fascinated me.
Eg the current re-hashing of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in the US is really strange and disturbing

deep saddle
#

One of the other guys in the honors program with me used to start debates on the credentials and validity on peer reviewed journals for our research papers and how to vetted peer reviewed journals.
The two of us are somewhat rebels in society sometimes and at odds when we think different and challenge the world around us to rise beyond hypocrisy to do better.

deep saddle
sick sleet
deep saddle
#

One of my art professors focused on historical China and art under Mao and she tried interviewing elders who survived Mao and it took a lot of work and digging to find people willing to speak. So she could write a book

#

We read fictional books in Asian Cultures. Like I actually enjoyed Balzac and the little Chinese seamstress. It's fictional but it makes you think about the historical time period and want to get into the real historical documents and evidence of the camps and book burning and such of Mao

dawn quartz
deep saddle
#

I spent a good deal of time better understanding Colonialism in college also. As we went to Morocco and I saw first hand the modern effects of it.

deep saddle
#

So there is less of a need to vette through peer reviewed journals?

sick sleet
deep saddle
#

Ah yea sorry

#

Think I went in 2019. A blizzard in Boston cost us 4 days on the trip as they rebooted the flight.

dawn quartz
#

If you want to refute a paper, you really have to show that the math was off, the methods sucked, and/or they made logical errors.

deep saddle
#

That's valid.

#

Can you identify a potential for bias in the paper? Or are they always biased given we're all human with a lense filter?

dawn quartz
#

The latter.
But you can see if they took the proper measures to account for that.

deep saddle
#

Ah interesting.

dawn quartz
#

In medical research that's usually blinding.

deep saddle
#

Ok

dawn quartz
# deep saddle Ah interesting.

ā€œThe first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.ā€

Richard Feynman

deep saddle
#

Valid.

deep saddle
#

Sometimes I can veer off into so many different tangents of interesting topics, I never go deep enough.

#

Like when my PC broke and I had to figure out a brand new build I discovered there was a gpu shortage. And I dove into understand the crisis and also better understanding computers and parts in general and how to research companies ect.

dawn quartz
#

And when we get into this stuff, we need understand the technical forms of the word validity; ie in logic or as it pertains to testing/data.
Logically valid arguments can be factually incorrect.
A valid test isn't necessarily reliable.

dawn quartz
deep saddle
#

I discovered the shortage in July tho. When it was too late to join the evga que lol. And I began camping bestbuy online and such. It was madness.

dawn quartz
#

It's still nuts out there

sick sleet
#

there are also very different ways to look at the same data. which are useful for answering different questions. one of my coworkers actualy has a microbiology background, but is mostly our "monitoring" person. and while his "i dont get it, explain" questions are bloody annoying, they are also bloody effective in the long run. as in, he is my favorite rubber duck for years now. if i am struggling with a pile of data, i sit down with him over lunch, and try to explain it, and usualy he will ask very good questions even though he knows less about the topic than i do.

deep saddle
#

Yea I got super lucky. My local microcenter began stockpiling gpu's to do full builds on black Friday instead of doing a morning shuffle. So I got a 3080 strix in a full build. With a liquid cooling fee sadly.

deep saddle

Well one of my doctors has two degrees. He got his residency at Tufts. And another residency in Arizona at a holistic location. So he's a functional medicine doctor. And he's concerned about long term affects of the Vax.
He's ambivalent about the vaccine for anyone under 65

#

My allergist at Lahey was on the board that rolled out Vax to pediatrics in Massachusetts. So I leaned more into listening to her and reading for myself.

sick sleet
dawn quartz
#

"Holistic" is often a red flag with regards to evidence based medicine.
Not in all cases, but many.

deep saddle
#

Holistic for me, is working with a doctor that cares to better understand the value of nutrition and stress and lifestyle in relation to health. And he'll write up a pharmaceutical prescription immediately if needed. He's not opposed to medicine. He combines it to nutrition and exercising and mental health and spiritual health

#

Which like I got into yoga and stuff over the years for example.

dawn quartz
#

Any Dr worth their salt does that

sick sleet
deep saddle

But functional medicine doctors go the extra mile to obtain a second degree in nutrition and stuff.

On top of their medical degree.

I think is the main difference. If it matters

what triggers me about the "longterm" part is ... yes, there are "long term" vax studies. but that isnt about time at all. its about number of doses applied. if you have a problem that only shows up on average every 1mil doses applied, with a normal vax that takes years to notice. thats what that term is about. but for c19 vax, we have 10bil+ doses applied now? under the closest / most intense scrutiny for a vax ever?

sick sleet
# dawn quartz Im not familiar with the system, but isn't it modular?

the problem with starlink in its current form is, you need local ground stations. they dont have inter-sat links yet, so the user-terminals in that pic bounce the signal up to a sat, and the sat bounces it back down to a ground station "nearby". as in, both the user and the uplink station need to be within range of the same sat. this can be "some hundred kilometers", but not "thousands".

jagged birch

Being a part of the EU, I thought though one of the benefits was free passage between member states

All he'd need to do was lock down loyalty with politicians.

#

Something he has had no trouble doing

sick sleet
#

as in, if anyone there is going to starve within a week, they probably pissed off every single of their neighbours in some way.

jagged birch

Time to make rock soup

#

I wonder if that's a thing people do

It's a story I know about sharing

Poor families coming together to feed a village

glass wyvern

Nah I don’t think it’s like that. I think it’s that they get fucked over by the mega rich and they are shat on from monumentally great heights by a government that spins huge webs of crap and throws them under busses.

jagged birch
#

I don't know that the megarich are going to be doing so well with no logistics in Russia

#

If companies like Maersk refuse to ship

This isn't exactly harvest season

sick sleet
glass wyvern
#

Of course

sick sleet
#

the sanctions right now are sure drastic and meant to send a message. but in practice, i expect it to be mainly that: a message.

glass wyvern
#

But why does it need to get worse continuously?

#

The sanctions will result in the ultra poor being so demoralised with life they take theirs or rebel perhaps, the trouble is they don’t see the gains from rebelling maybe because they don’t see how they can make a difference.

jagged birch
#

Farmers are going to get screwed hard this year

In Russia, that is

This is what makes me feel very sorry for them

The mega rich, I couldn’t give a fuck about them.. they probably paid for this shit

#

I mean what sort of a bell end needs a yacht that costs 1m€ to refuel each time…

jagged birch

War is ugly. There are a lot of not so rich people fully aware of the long term consequences of living like this in russia. As a result protests are faster becoming violent

sick sleet
jagged birch
#

There have been so many arrests in russia that Human Rights Watch have taken notice

#

Between February 24 and February 28, according to figures collected by OVD-Info, an independent human rights project working to protect freedom of assembly in Russia, authorities arbitrarily detained at least 5982 anti-war protestors across Russia. On February 27, the Prosecutor General's Office published a warning that any persons determined to be providing financial or any other support to foreign state, foreign or international organizations to the detriment of Russia's security and defense capacity will be prosecuted on ''high treason,ā€ punishable with up to 20 years' imprisonment.

jagged birch

A numbers station is a shortwave radio station characterized by broadcasts of formatted numbers, which are believed to be addressed to intelligence officers operating in foreign countries. Most identified stations use speech synthesis to vocalize numbers, although digital modes such as phase-shift keying and frequency-shift keying, as well as Mo...

sick sleet

sick sleet
#

it is, and it started weeks ago.

jagged birch
#

Oops. You can't broadcast on your numbers station?

#

I find it silly someone would still be using numbers stations. They're all monitored.

#

Even if they aren't decrypted right away, that doesn't mean that their use won't result in future consequences.

#

Even if those consequences are never published as they appear

sick sleet
#

the whole point of a properly run numbers station is you can not decrypt it at all.

#

note the "more than a month ago" timestamp there.

#

it has been ongoing in the last days.

jagged birch
#

Wouldn't be able to take over a frequency anyway. Just provide a more powerful transmission on that frequency.

Though maybe thats what they mean

Though it's dumb to flood the frequency with a specific message

If the message is too specific, it can be parsed out

sorry, i know everyone understood, im just trying to educate myself as i dont know too much about Ukraine. figured youd have a better perspective than i do as i sit in the US. i read an article that said that Ukranians spell it Kyiv and want ppl to spell it that way. didnt know Kiev was also the german spelling. researching now i found this wiki article about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KyivNotKiev

KyivNotKiev is an online campaign started by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) together with the 15 member centre for strategic communications "StratCom Ukraine" on 2 October 2018. Its goal is to persuade English-language media and organisations to exclusively use Kyiv (derived from the Ukrainian language name ŠšŠøŃ—Š²) instead of Kiev...

Though Canada for over a decade used to import parts from China, and to get around laws about "made in Canada" labels, companies would assemble Chinese products in Canada

Gave the impression products were Canadian, that were actually only assembled in Canada

Ultimately a failing venture as Canadian inspection standards caught up to the poor quality - resulting in so many products failing inspection flatout, companies would just move inspection to China

sick sleet
# civic swift You think Russia would try and take satellites out of orbit?

they actualy demonstrated targets ASAT capability a while back. but "orbit broom" is an older, much lower-tech concept with much more devastating overall effect. you dont need targeted ASAT tech. you really just need an orbital launch capability, and launch a bag of gravel into an orbit retrograde from what you want gone.

civic swift

But again

Could be seen as an act of aggression

#

Y’know

Taking out satellites would be on par with attacking a countries military or infrastructure

Depending on who owns the satellite

i have seen a news item or three that could be interpreted as ... an act of aggression.
