and once it is up there, its fucking heavy enough to stay. š
Everything you do on the ocean is much more dangerous and time consuming
no. but had an office right next to Hamburg harbor for years. as in, if i dropped out the window, and made it more than 2m away from the wall during the four floors down, i would have ended up in the harbor basin. you get to see a lot of wacky ship antics that way.
Point being, that process you described takes a tremendous amount of human work hours and it's not an every day operation.
it isnt, but its also very much the special move of that particular ship. š
it does, but again, for the blue marlin, its ... like ... average? not that i have seen any stats, but that ship is built for silly stunts like that. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/Dockwise_HLV_BLUE_MARLIN_preparing_to_offload_OCEAN_MONARCH.jpg
Yes, and to suggest the largest vessel of it's kind just pulls in, sinks, and grabs the load is absurd lol
pft. ok. they were probably chanting "ho, ho, and a bottle of rum" while doing it. š
Balancing the USS Cole on there must have been interesting
I suppose it would make for a great pirate vessel lol
(and jfc. i am getting roasted by a single anklebiter about the BOJO "frontlines" photo op thing. bloody hell? its a) BOJO, b) a photo-op 2500km from kiev being called "on the frontlines", which c) makes it a reasonable 90%+ default to assume everything else said in that context was lies too...)
and tbqfh, it doesnt take (b) there. (a) leading straight to (c).
source/ref for the 90%+ number ... "only 9 per cent of us believe PM ātells the truthā" ... https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/half-the-cabinets-seats-now-at-risk-reveals-new-poll-gtktx2r0w
Seems to me that if one takes an oath to public office, lying under that context should be perjury at the very least.
Guys
Kadyrov said that he'll sanction the West if they don't lift the sanctions on Russia , We're fucked
meanwhile, onlyfans and twitch also imposed a block/geofence on RU. afaict that going to be a lot more effective than anything Kadyrov might do. š
Didn't p-hub do the same?
yeah. and steam.
Oh that reminds me. Some of my wish list is currently on sale again
Funny how united the world can be
Kadyrov also claims thereās been no loss of their forces and that the Russians could take the cities anytime they wanted but they are trying to limit the loss of life.
Steam?
i like how a lot of companies decided "ok, lets do this, we dont need a UN resolution for it". in comparison, just to shit on BOJO some more ... the UK is blocking RU airlines. which means RU oligarchs with private planes are still welcome. well, yeah, they own like half of london, so...
Really?
lemme find the source on that one ...
Yeah reminds me of some covid responses, private vs public
I gotta wonder what this war is going to end up being called a couple years from now
The Sanction War? The Ukrainian-Russia war?
@dawn quartz also the private jet that I tracked landed in Moscow
Ukrainian-Russo war
I'm rooting for "The fall of Russia"
Why the facepalm?
See aion's post above.
Exactly
@sleek river ok. wrong on that one. it was valve, not steam (pc gaming is a mystery to me) and apparently not true. sadness. https://www.talkesport.com/news/csgo/is-gabe-newell-banning-russia-from-csgo/
it's a demonstration of the loophole, because those people have those resources
I knew it was false because Russian kids and guys were screaming when I played cs:go
@dawn quartz quick delivery
CNN has an article on the affect of the invasion on Wallstreet, European security firms and investors.
but while looking for the steam/valve thing, i found the/a source for this one: https://twitter.com/CITeam_en/status/1497573785414901760
The Russia-Ukraine war so far has had both heroic and horrific episodes.
This is perhaps the strangest of them: the story of how a Russian riot police convoy went to conquer Kyiv on its own. https://t.co/mWYWjIKkwj

How stupid are they?
It could shake up where the business deals happen and who with. So even if the invasion is a failure it could be a long term power move maybe.
I wanna say the r word but that breaks the rules
BP: British oil company BP is the largest foreign investor in Russia with a 19.75% stake in the country's national oil company Rosneft. It also holds stakes in several other oil and gas projects in Russia.
Danone: The French yogurt maker Danone controls Russian dairy brand Prostokvanhino and gets 6% of total sales from the country.
ExxonMobil: The American oil giant has more than 1,000 employees in Russia, and has been in the country for over 25 years.
It's affecting McDonald's oreo and Cadbury also. The sanctions I mean
So inflation can happen in western society from it.
Ah we have them everywhere.
I do my best to avoid mobile and BP for gas anyways.
I mean exxon/mobile was caught hiding climate change evidence anyways.
And BP had the oil spill
Well I only pay 0.0646$ for public transport
Why it affecting Oreo of all things
All those companies have workers factories or resources coming from Russia
Ah
Also wheat and corn price inflation
In some ways I'm lucky in that we have a lot of local farms here and I can source locally. But it can be more expensive.
I'm gluten intolerant.
I was not one of those pandemic people to learn to make bread lol
We eat it everyday here
Ah sorry
Np
I consume more rice these days or lentils and quinoa.
The fuck I'm gonna eat instead of bread now
Flour prices will shot up
Nah , don't like Rice
Almond flour easier to make gluten free bread if you can still consume eggs
I can't have eggs either which makes it extra challenging to navigate.
I can consume anything consumable by the human body , don't worry
Also anonymous brought down Belarusian banks
BREAKING: EU fighters jets offered as military aid to Ukraine will arrive within an hour

How many?
Not sure but that was talked about in the press conference earlier today, so that was quick
Did Putin ready nuclear weapons?
US called it a bluff
The US's intelligence is pretty good so I'll trust them on that
I called it a bluff. Guess he's as mentally unbalanced as Kim after all
Kim is more mentally stable than him lol
That's a frightening thought.
ā”ļøBelarus will renounce its non-nuclear and neutral status, allowing Russia to place nuclear weapons on its territory, as a result of the referendum held today.
65.16% of citizens allegedly supported these constitutional amendments.
Belarus is cute with its trying to be an adult.
I really don't think Belarus knows what's coming to them after Russia is put down
Yeah... I thought at the start, when they first gave support, that it might make sense for them if they assume Russia is going to win... now, seems much less sensible.
Ruble just dropped by 6% in 4 minutes
Last chance bluff?
let me see if i can find that prediction for this week ... it didnt seem reasonable to post at the time, but by now ...
How did they do a referendum in like 2 days anyway
belarus? referendum? there is a questions-to-radio-eriwan joke in there somewhere, yes?
"""My predictions for the next days:
Monday: Bank Run in Russia begins. No more Cash available.
Tuesday: Beginning of Food-Looting in bigger cities
Wednesday: Widespread Looting in Russia, Police forces stops to prevent Looting, because they are hungry too and cant buy Food
Anytime between Tuesday and Friday: Putin has a "medical Emergency" and it will stay unclear for multiple days if he is still alive.
Oligarchs will then frame the situation as "We are so sorry and have been blackmailed by a madmen" - this will be the confirmation that Putin is dead.
Next Week: Putins successor offers to give the Krim back, to smooth things over with Ukraine"""
https://twitter.com/ijonberlin/status/1497980132233027587
Will they give Georgia our stolen lands back too?
Putin won't die. He'll agree to let Ukraine go and withdraw to the eastern border as a measure of showing "good faith", then never leave in the hope people ease pressure on Russia. Then the EU will fold like a cheap suit as "peace talks" continue and Russia pushes the line through sabotage and hacking
China was bound to think with their wallet eventually.
China trade with US alone = 583 bil $US.
With Russia, it's a mere 84.
And now that Russia's money is worthless even more so
They'll re-evaluate their movements in Belarus and set up a strategy that includes cutting off the western border so Ukraine can't use the Polish border
China is still staying out of this or voting no.
Russia did the same thing in Syria, when facing the US in direct conflict
They play nice until they can move their forces, then act like dicks again
if you had asked me a month ago, i would have said putin is like way, way, way more rational/sane than lukashenko ... currently, i am less sure.
Putin is old and he wants to be the statue that re-united the USSR
The Russian Federation is abhorrent to that troll
I just got out of box proposal how to end the Russian aggression. West announces that every Russian soldier which surrenders to Ukrainians will receive asylum in the West! I think its victorious idea from artist Aigars BikŔe. Countries which do not give weapons to UA give asylum.

This sounds more believable than the other thing, sadly
Putin had a good bluff during the last 4 or 5 years on his rationality and grip on reality.
French volunteers are organizing care packages for refugees
Ukraine soldiers are wearing 3 ply masks.
Which is good
Well I suppose it depends.
With all the new science and disagreements
it matters if you intend to come home.
wrt french ... the french authorized ukrainian members of their foreign legion to go home. and take their whole equipment with them.
that would have me slightly worried as a green/conscript russian. š
at pretty much the same time, the ukrainians announced they are establishing a foreign legion.
if the french FL urkainians build the core of that one, the russians are doomed. š
#Ukrainians from the #French Foreign Legion will be able to go to #Ukraine with full combat gear. https://t.co/BwWogYDsTB

Ah yea.
as someone put it on reddit ... "You know, individually all of these things are small. But they really add up to one giant Fuck Russia when you put them all together."
(which is wrong. its "fuck Putin". with an additional "a" if you are french.)
There is no real disagreement that masks work.
(there is resonable disagreement about percentages, which is related to situation and mask quality.)
No medical intervention is 100% so that's a red herring
exactly.
if you take three measures that each are only 80% effective, overall you are still at 99%+ ... the swiss-cheese strategy.
I was doing some napkin math just for kicks a while back.
If the hydrogen sulfide molecule (egg farts) was the size of a tennis ball, the Covid virus would roughly have a diameter the length of a football field.
That people were using smells as some kind of proof that a given mesh cant stop a virus is funny in that respect
and with filters, "size is less important than how you use it". very much.
To a degree.
You can certainly make things useless
And type.
even on the purely mechanical level, there is that concept of "mean free path". because even a particle much smaller than a filter "opening" has to navigate a labyrinth of filter fibers. and in general wont make it.
But there is more disagreement on masking mandates than actual masks l
I.e. politic
And how you use it. And everything. Like most people don't get custom fitted to n95
and most masks go well beyond the mechanical level. melt-blown masks have a "static charge" thing going on, which drastically reduces the mean free path inside beyond the purely mechanic.
There's a rational argument for medical autonomy, but our lives are constant compromises of personal liberties and public well being.
Public health has long outweighed those liberties that said.
but ... i will appreciate someone wearing a crappy clothes mask over someone going maskless because "masks are useless" any day. play the percentages game. a 50% reduction is a whole lot better than 0%.
Last I checked ~10% of infected were likely responsible for ~80% of transmissions
there was an awesome case diagram from korea this month. they have few enough cases that they actually still can do case tracking. and when comparing it to whats going on locally, it was "i facepalmed so hard i got a concussion".
How so?
germany has been running on a mantra of "schools/kindergartens are not a pandemic vector" and "its harmless for children" ... but ... it turns out, these children go home. and there are entirely able to infect their relatives.
and that korean chain map showed that quite clearly. single imported index case, carried into a kindergarten, and spreading like wildfire from there.
Ah, yeah,
Kids are often filthy after all lol
(ok, so the two kindergartens were not the main hubs. but you might get the point anyways. š )
I had to try and debunk a friend a month ago on invermectin. He was citing Croatia I think
It's always interesting to see stuff like that.
You can clearly see how relatively few people were responsible for most of the spread.
It works, on populations you'd expect to have worms.
https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/ivermectin-much-more-than-you-wanted
Lol like the October expedition.
Tho I got a worm egg. So I don't wanna use it if I got a pet
(if you have worms that size, you got other problems than masks...)
Haha yes, 10/10 thumbnail
Depends on what you mean by a giant worm?and that gives me dune vibes.
But that article is the most thorough piece on the Ivermectin data Ive seen, by a long shot
And the author is fair.
thing is ... no single measure is going to be 100%. and that just means we stack a bunch of them. in particular the easy ones.
and masks are pretty friggen easy if you are not a petulant child about it.
wait. thats unfair. children are actualy quite reasonable about masks afaict.
Right, and those are exactly the kinds of things you want to weigh when deciding on a medical intervention.
They are cheap, effective, don't need specialized training in the gen pop, and generally readily available.
Yet people would rather take an untested dewormer.
sigh
This channel is great for anyone interested in virology btw

He covers some other topics as well
I'm Vincent Racaniello, Earth's virology Professor. It's my goal to teach virology to the world. Better than Zdogg?
My allergist has me reading the new england medical journal regularly. But I go to other sources also.
I like Zdogg in general but this is much more academic oriented
thing is ... if you are actually allergic to a vaccine, that will show up within low-single-digit minutes. thats why after vaxx shot you are put 15 minutes in a waiting area here. and if you show a reaction, which is fscking rare but happens, they will have the crew, staff and meds on site to get you through that.
If you're reading journals, you'll want to focus on meta analyses/systematic reviews.
Individual studies are relatively weak by comparison
and while that is certainly not a pleasant experience at all, you probably would know before, will survive without damage, and ... thats still fscking rare? like super-super rare. in particular to have a major relevant allergy and not know about it.
So I just got the pneumo Vax last summer. My allergist had an interesting idea for helping with my chronic sinusitis. I had the coughing congestion type of symptoms for 4 or 5 years. Really went downhill with allergies and acid reflux. The Vax with bloodwork before and after showed my body does really well at gaining all the proper antibodies from vaccines. Which doubled my confidence.
I had strep way too often growing up so I had a handful of antibodies already
š on four levels there. a) listening to your doc (because, lets face it, they may know a thing or two more about the topic than internet warriors do), b) overcoming whatever fears/inhibitions you might have had about it, c) getting things checked before/after because thats how science works, and finally d) talking about it here.

Been watching Newsmax constantly since last Tuesday. Ukraine is outnumbered but still holding USSR back. But now there are several countries in the area discussing the nuclear option as USSR deploys nuclear deterrent measures. š¦
if i may ask, where in the area are you?
in put(a)ins mind, the last weeks? USSR certainly is what its about. š
i am less than 1k km from ukraine, we have several members here who are even closer to ukraine or russia.
At the least seemingly trying to recreate the territorial claims of the USSR
But I suppose going back to the USSRās form of government would be helpful to Putin as he would no longer need to create rigged elections anymore
Not saying the citizens are happy about it, they don't seem to be, and the Russian army is a conscripted army so they aren't happy either.
Honestly a big piece of the Vax can be overcoming all the politics and divisiveness and grounding yourself in the science fir a lot of people
From what iāve heard a good portion of the Russian invading force didnāt even know they were going into Ukraine until they were in Ukraine
I remember it's a Beetles song.
Exactly
If I lived closer to a border I would likely find a way to volunteer. But I'm in the US also
Almost nobody involved supports the war
Which might explain why Ukraine has been kicking Russia's ass all week.
The troops themselves are pretty much completely unprepared
Sure, they have the equipment
i still dont know what to think about that one. if its true, its ... bad. if it isnt true, it means ukraine is dominating the infoscape against the russian troll armies in a way that plain up ... hilarious.
I have much respect for Zelenskyy.
But they werenāt expecting to be a part of an invasion force
Same
some people were wondering why zelensky might be the way he is. like, grounded, reasonable, and connected to base reality compared to so many politicos. and, uh, it might be pretty simple. turns out the guy is ... younger than me.
How old is he?
44
Dang
Yeah 44
That is young compared to most politicians tbh
He is worlds better than our U.S. president!
Uh oh
yeah, its not young-young, but ... uh ... go find me a president who is younger?
As soon as he came into office he started cleaning up their corrupt government
These words are guaranteed to start a fight at a family reunion lmao
(it also makes me feel old/useless once again, but i wont blame him for that...)
If you donāt mind answering, how old are you, aion?
Well anyone who thinks Biden is an effective president has been blindfolded and kept in a cellar for the past year+.
300? You got the wisdom of an ancient.
Still probably best if we try to limit politics and focus on the current events
Biden is the reason for the current events.
Well I know someone with that perspective. And he would rather Trump as he's tougher on China than Biden is his claim even though he hates both sides.
But yea
Just out of the virtue of not accidentally starting an internet argument, okay?
I⦠guess?
I don't guess
Ok then
@glad jay note its still more about the ... immediate situation. while i am not aware of any actual ukrainian members of the community, ranting about "how did it come to that" is largely out of scope unless you can do it on an awesome academic/scholar level. š
Yea there are professor historians who specialize in looking at patterns in history that lead to major events like this. Or that give way to the rise of a so called "strongman".
I am not an academic. I can't tell you what I do, but this is the same as what the U.S.'s view before WWII and we ended up dragged into the conflict.
By the way, with the U.S.;s (Trump's ) help, the Ukraine have been preparing for this a long time.
Is the only reason they have survived so far
Especially the stinger missiles, which they used yesterday
as an older-than-zelensky german, i think i am somewhat qaulified to have an opinion on ww2-related matters, and ... thats not my immediate concern there. the unholy overlap/alliance between the far-right and the current "antivaxx" troops give me quite a bit of headache in general, but ... thats not what ukraine is about?
i dont see that. trump is the guy who got impeached for withholding support for ukraine.
I didn't realize you were German. Which part are you from may I ask? I found the countryside beautiful
It's not about Ukraine at all. THe ultimate target of Putin, and he has stated this many times over the last 5 years, is the U.S.
YOu are a CNN watcher I see. That never happened. BIDEN was caught on mic as threatening to withold funds from Ukraine if they didn't fire the attorney investigating his son's crimes.
varied. western. i was born in a part where as soon as anyone tried to dig deeper in their garden than "planting tulips" we had bomb/ied scares. i lived in various places over the years. anything from "400 humans and 4x that in livestock"-rural to major cities. currently (and for the last 20+ years) in berlin.
TRUMP called Zelenskyy to congratulate him. But if you were watching the mainstream news, that was never told
@glad jay sorry, but i do not subscribe to your version of alternate/contrafactual reality.
It's on audio! There is an on-going investigation to go after those that were trying to defame Trump! My god man! Stop watching MSNBC, CNN, etc!
Already proven they lied and law suits are pending!
Where the hell have you been?
@glad jay i do not watch CNN or MSNBC, and afaik the "on audio" shows the exact opposite of what you claim.
No they don't
Okay, Apparently I am the only one that knows anything. You all need to do your research. Until then, I don't speak with idiots.
later
Wow sorry about the scares. My French professor in college also taught German. She was from Bavaria. Dad used to work for a dental company that had a division in France and Germany and took us on a trip to Europe for my 12th Birthday. So I saw some of the German countryside in the south and we took the train to Berlin. And took the Rhine castle tour. Dad had a cousin stationed nearby at the time.
@civic swift
Eh?
you were right. About things escalating with politics
Think it just burned itself out.
nothing to be sorry about there. i see the points that had to be made, but i personally also do not feel responsible for anything my grantparents generation did. i look at this, and say "not going to happen again on my watch if i can do anything about it". just tried to provide some context.
Yea I agree with not carrying generational shame. And learning to move forward without being tied to history from guilt or shame. shame. Spent too much time studying emotional trauma and patterns of thought and behavior lol
You're not responsible.
I barely remember any German vocabulary BTW. Been a long time. We had so many business men visiting when I grew up. So that's partly why we had a family trip abroad. I used to have some basics.
languages are a tool. english is my third language. one i entirely sucked at in school. i only learned it later, when it became relevant to my interests.
Ah nice.
I love languages. But yea it's a tool to reach goals or communicate
I had 4 semesters of French, 1 of darjiba to prepare for Morocco and 1 in Italian.
yeah, but also one that ... doesnt break a deal on its own? you can get by with a lot of guessing and handwaving if the involved parties want to make things work.
True.
But I dabble in CNN but I barely watch it compared to the old days before I became more invested in independent news and podcasts and self awareness. I take everything I read and hear with a grain of salt as much as I can and do my best to vette it.
But you could literally spend all day every day vetting stuff if you really wanted to.
And occasionally I stream French culture news to attempt to to not lose anymore of my vocabulary and language skill development.
Like I was listening to France 24 during dinner. To see how much I retained
Language is like a muscle you need to workout
i am first and foremost a nerd. which means i am curious about pretty much anything. but (and thats something some people are missing) also means i can defer to people who clearly know more about some topic than me, without me second-guessing them based on half-understood whatevers.
Yea deferring isn't something everyone has the emotional capacity to do.
Starting to smell like q-anonsense in here
I'm a deep thinker. I question everything and ponder why things work the way they do. And in college I discovered a passion not only for diversity and science or human rights, but social patterns and behaviors through history. And I spend a lot of time studying psychology given my own ptsd and family.
I lost track of how many different subjects we got to learn about in college. And I've spent time in the last 2 years learning more medical and virology stuff and understand DNA better and such. And my primary care is thrilled to hear I'm invested now in better understanding medicine and it's connection to my own health and patterns of thought and behavior in society.
Sorry. That was long winded. I'm a talker.
A lot of you are just intellectually on a whole different level than me and with way more knowledge that goes deeper on a variety of subjects. That is something I aspire to continue towards.
Sounds like you're doing a commendable job.
If only more people were that curious.
@deep saddle did you see the posts by powerdns bert about mrna? that was like very, very epic for me. but also more a "hey, cool to know" than "i now feel entitled to make my own decisions based on this" thing.
There is a ton of great, free educational material out there for anyone willing to take the effort.
Yea. Thanks I saved it to read another day
As it relates to the current situation, misinformation/propaganda has always fascinated me.
Eg the current re-hashing of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in the US is really strange and disturbing
One of the other guys in the honors program with me used to start debates on the credentials and validity on peer reviewed journals for our research papers and how to vetted peer reviewed journals.
The two of us are somewhat rebels in society sometimes and at odds when we think different and challenge the world around us to rise beyond hypocrisy to do better.
Propaganda is a whole interesting rabbit hole on it's own
dont get me started. i love a good conspiracy theory really. like the RAW books. as long as everyone involved is aware we are AR larping.
One of my art professors focused on historical China and art under Mao and she tried interviewing elders who survived Mao and it took a lot of work and digging to find people willing to speak. So she could write a book
We read fictional books in Asian Cultures. Like I actually enjoyed Balzac and the little Chinese seamstress. It's fictional but it makes you think about the historical time period and want to get into the real historical documents and evidence of the camps and book burning and such of Mao
I'm involved in some pain neuroscience/rehab groups that do just that.
Learning to read and deconstruct that kind of stuff is really useful.
But that said, you're veering into ad hominem.
While sure, some journals are trash, that's not actually a logically sound rebuttal if you want to be fair.
Validity is something else entirely.
I spent a good deal of time better understanding Colonialism in college also. As we went to Morocco and I saw first hand the modern effects of it.
I'll consider that.
So there is less of a need to vette through peer reviewed journals?
i was on my way to a nerd conference in marocco in early 2020 when things went to hell. š¦
Ah yea sorry
Think I went in 2019. A blizzard in Boston cost us 4 days on the trip as they rebooted the flight.
If you want to refute a paper, you really have to show that the math was off, the methods sucked, and/or they made logical errors.
That's valid.
Can you identify a potential for bias in the paper? Or are they always biased given we're all human with a lense filter?
The latter.
But you can see if they took the proper measures to account for that.
Ah interesting.
In medical research that's usually blinding.
Ok
āThe first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.ā
Richard Feynman
Valid.
Tho that escalation of politics earlier makes me question this lol.
Jk
Sometimes I can veer off into so many different tangents of interesting topics, I never go deep enough.
Like when my PC broke and I had to figure out a brand new build I discovered there was a gpu shortage. And I dove into understand the crisis and also better understanding computers and parts in general and how to research companies ect.
And when we get into this stuff, we need understand the technical forms of the word validity; ie in logic or as it pertains to testing/data.
Logically valid arguments can be factually incorrect.
A valid test isn't necessarily reliable.
That's a great way to understand things imo
I discovered the shortage in July tho. When it was too late to join the evga que lol. And I began camping bestbuy online and such. It was madness.
It's still nuts out there
there are also very different ways to look at the same data. which are useful for answering different questions. one of my coworkers actualy has a microbiology background, but is mostly our "monitoring" person. and while his "i dont get it, explain" questions are bloody annoying, they are also bloody effective in the long run. as in, he is my favorite rubber duck for years now. if i am struggling with a pile of data, i sit down with him over lunch, and try to explain it, and usualy he will ask very good questions even though he knows less about the topic than i do.
Yea I got super lucky. My local microcenter began stockpiling gpu's to do full builds on black Friday instead of doing a morning shuffle. So I got a 3080 strix in a full build. With a liquid cooling fee sadly.
But it kept me from going crazy. Cuz I used to stare at live streams and que's and stock alerts 13 hours a day in the summer
(pc gamers. snorts and pets his ps4)
Yea none of my doctors can agree on the vaccine or covid and many can interpret data differently.
I got a white rgb pc build now. It's so much better than my old pc.
That's strange, the supporting evidence is very compelling and there is wide consensus about that, in the actual medical community
do they agree on the basics? mainly "go get your jabs, doesnt matter which, while we discuss academic details which dont matter to the general population"? š
Covid data is very robust because of the large numbers involved.
The cohorts for even the early stages of testing are very large.
Well one of my doctors has two degrees. He got his residency at Tufts. And another residency in Arizona at a holistic location. So he's a functional medicine doctor. And he's concerned about long term affects of the Vax.
He's ambivalent about the vaccine for anyone under 65
My allergist at Lahey was on the board that rolled out Vax to pediatrics in Massachusetts. So I leaned more into listening to her and reading for myself.
my red flag there is "long term effects of vax". that is ... imle a very unfortunate misinterpretation by civilians that should happen with a med person.
"Holistic" is often a red flag with regards to evidence based medicine.
Not in all cases, but many.
Holistic for me, is working with a doctor that cares to better understand the value of nutrition and stress and lifestyle in relation to health. And he'll write up a pharmaceutical prescription immediately if needed. He's not opposed to medicine. He combines it to nutrition and exercising and mental health and spiritual health
Which like I got into yoga and stuff over the years for example.
Any Dr worth their salt does that
that sounds reasonable, indeed.
But functional medicine doctors go the extra mile to obtain a second degree in nutrition and stuff.
On top of their medical degree.
I think is the main difference. If it matters
Is it breakfast time for you? Lol
Well yea I get full bloodwork panels done every few months. And we try and balance my systems via understanding my vitamin and mineral levels
what triggers me about the "longterm" part is ... yes, there are "long term" vax studies. but that isnt about time at all. its about number of doses applied. if you have a problem that only shows up on average every 1mil doses applied, with a normal vax that takes years to notice. thats what that term is about. but for c19 vax, we have 10bil+ doses applied now? under the closest / most intense scrutiny for a vax ever?
SBM under the helm of Drs Gorski and Hall are at the spear tip of promoting science based medicine.
Their takes are well worth delving into.
Dr Hall's "Tooth Fairy Science" lecture is excellent as well.
I'll take a look sometime.
I got diagnosed with hemochromatosis over a year ago. So some of the bloodwork is to monitor the phlebotomy.
Feynman's "Cargo Cult Science" address is excellent as well
(and the "cargo cult" problem is ... widely applicable. well beyond medical.)
on my nerd/tech level, its a problem closely related to "scenario fullfilment". as in, you are always going to put todays problem into the context of something you debugged last week. sometimes thats good. sometimes its very bad. mainly you need to know you are going to do it, even if you dont mean to.
lol
Reminds me of this, we really are a mess lol
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/Cognitive_bias_codex_en.svg
thats a ... very verbose way to put it. š
(shit. i perhaps recognize 10% of the details there?)
Oh and my friend calls me a nerd mainly cuz, I'm a little Harry Potter obsessed lol.
And the video games.
Not really cuz of my constant research and self education
Nerds pretty much rule the world rn
i wish. there are still also the whackos with the nukes.

True that

I channel my inner Sasha fierce when I'm more confident. It's rare these days.

(wanted to paste this in work chat, and google chat doesnt provide a reasonable preview, and ffox wont let me scrape it either. it certainly is a global conspiracy behind that...)
Lol
lmao, no clarity for the dirty masses
Who needs clarity? When we have people to think for us.
Yes, line me up
yes? because if the collective open-source cryptography nerds out there tell me "this is currently the best crypto for your webserver", i am not going to "but i saw an 8yo webforum post out there with a different opinion", i am going to put whatever magic openssl cipher string they recommend into my ssl.conf. and then i am doublechecking it worked with sslscan.
Oh I have a sarcastic sense of humor sometimes. Like I was thinking about how some people just parrot what they hear on fox news.
(since snowden, a LOT of "internal" IT got upgraded to current state-of-the-art levels. and sometimes, the results are hilarious. on public endpoints, i agree we shouldnt lock customers with (idioticly) retro setups out. we should offer better, but dont block old stuff. but on internal, i am "state of the art or error" all the way. the fallout from that is rare, but if it happens, its ... educational.)
So the US Embassay in Russia is urging Americans to depart from the country it sounds like.
yup, and many others are too, as of ... yesterday.
Cuz Europe already closed it's flights to planes.
Makes sense. Leave before you get stuck
Apparently interest in the Ukraine's proposed foreign legion is so strong they are only accepting those with combat experience now.
sauce?
All the embassy contacts are up and people are trying to join over on stack's history server

And random fun fact Tokyo is moving towards a same sex partnership system before the rest of Japan.

Yea. But it doesn't surprise me.
So does an invasion like this risk Russia's eligibility to remain in the UN?
And a Ukranian Woman is offering sunflower seeds to Russian troops in town so a flower blooms when they die. Not sure if the YouTube video has been vetted yet.
lots of cases like that over the last days actualy. the sunflower curse. the sunflower is the national flower of ukraine.
i looked as 2-3 cases of this, and while i understand fuck-all ukrainian, what impressed me was these persons were all very non-hostile about phrasing a very fuck-you thing.
Yea. It still takes balls.
as in, even without understanding the language, and getting the "sunflower" aspect of it only through translations, just listening to the voice made it very clear that they were telling them to fuck off, and if they dont, and die here, they could at least do something mildly useful by acting as a sunflower nutritent source.
I mean I'd feel lots of them would understand lots of the Russians don't really want to be fighting there, like that video of the guy joking around about towing a Russian tank
Yea I understand what you mean
Also might have been fake (probably is) but I saw something about some fighting around the Chernobyl that they stopped to just kinda keep an eye on it
yeah, and thats why it works? if you are 20, shanghaied into an invasion and someone who by all properties could be your mom goes "hey, put this in your pockets so you will not be entirely useless if you die", thats ... uh ... some of the strongest non-kinetic impact i can come up with.
the chernobly part is more problematic, but aiui both sides on the ground dont want to glow in the dark, and found some localized truth thing around that common sentiment.
Man I don't wanna be a glow stick for my kids, let's be friends
This is so true, and agreed about the apparent "niceness'.
Serious question since I've been seeing some people around freaking out
Do y'all think we'll ever see a nuclear war in our lifetimes?
Personally I think we won't
Honestly that is a difficult question to answer. I don't know.
Yāall know the war going on with Russia and Ukraine right?
Putin said if any other country interferes he will unleash consequences greater than anyone has ever seen
And that genuinely scares me
I believe we discussed that a little earlier in the day. And some people felt like the US was calling his bluff.
Buy saying that heās is threatening nuclear warfare
It has best escalating rather quickly. And he doesn't seem rational.
I'm sorry you're dealing with it all right now.
Iām not in Ukraine but have just random nuke being dropped is not good either
Launching a nuke at anyone means nukes fly at him, which is the end of the world. Realistically, I think nukes are way out of the question, now that basically everyone has them.
I donāt think Putin is bluffing
I'm not the best person to rationally help you through it with logic and fact sorry. But I can validate how you feel.
Putin isnt a bluffer, but heās also not an idiot
I have very extremely high doubts weāll see nukes
What other consequence would he unleashed then
And it's possible Belarus is allowing him to bring the nuclear weapons into their country.
But again it might be a show for politics.
One nuke being launched means all the nukes are being launched, and that would destroy the planet
so eh
You're demonstrating why that kind of ambiguity is powerful
Ah good Bob is here. He can help
It wouldnt destroy the planet. It just cause a really long nuclear winter
Super Bob
We kinda canāt handle that
Our atmosphere is already shredded
I just dont think nukes are realistic, though they are imposing
Technically the global cooling via particulate could help
Oddly enough we might enter an ice age from climate change at some point.
Well not entirely natural if the cause is partially greenhouse gas emissions and such
It would help the planet and the atmosphere because it would destroy everything that produces C02 and life would come back
Without humans existing we already had many
I wonder how the planet would balance itself without humans. It probably did before we existed. And for us to try sometimes might be an ego thing.
Weāre just kinda speeding it along
Humans are the most dangerous animal on earth
There was an old video on national geographic I believe that forecasted with computer graphics how cities would look reclaimed by nature after humanity was gone.
That would look awsome
Was interesting
but yeah, nukes? No. Thatās idiotic. Hitting our power structures and shutting us down? Now thatās imposing.
We saw how well just Texas handles not having power
A lot of experts are focusing their talks on cyber war instead
Or you could release and uncurable desiese
"Ruin porn" is a thing
Giggity

There are bunkers out there with the most dangerous and uncurable desiese out there
Anywho, ye, this is all just sounding like fear mongering more than āwhats gonna happenā
Yea. It's easy to fall down the rabbit hole.
FUD
Especially now that everyones comfy and ignorant
I've had days where my anxiety disorder got the better of me with racing towards irrational fear over covid.
So. I can sympathize with how difficult it can be to ground yourself in present day facts.
Try a meditation.
āThe only thing we have to fear is fear itselfā - Franklin D. Roosevelt
Fear, uncertainty, and doubt (often shortened to FUD) is a propaganda tactic used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics, polling and cults. FUD is generally a strategy to influence perception by disseminating negative and dubious or false information and a manifestation of the appeal to fear.
Also dementors teach us that.
I have a book to read on fear one day. It's in my bookshelf. Too many books to get to
We are wholesome like a lalafell fishing.
any significant news since yesterday?
Not that I know at the moment.
The peace talk invitation in Belarus was yesterday maybe?
Happening today, Belarus tweeted that they have prepared the meeting room and showed a picture
So it's still moving forward. I wonder if Putin is stalling while the rest of his troops head in.
He already had crews on boats. And another band in the north
Talks are due to begin at 9am GMT itās been reported

I said before I don't think we'll ever see true nuclear war
But God damn I won't lie, I'm absolutely terrified Putin is going to do the unthinkable
supposedly russian news website TASS was hacked, displaying anti-war messages; russian defense ministry denies it
Anonymous, apparently
interesting, didn't see this before, TSMC is halting semi conductor exports to Russia
AMD and Intel as well
Yeah pretty sure Anonymous claimed they were gonna target Russian websites
Not surprising. Just about everybody is halting exports to Russia.
Nobody wants to deal with them
Just saw a video of some Ukrainian farmer towing away a tank with their tractor.
Guess he now owns a tank
thick
Switzerland going to apply sanctions as well, freezing assets
sounded like he was losing support from some Russian billionaires too
he being pootin
Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea FC in London was approached by a Ukrainian film maker to ask him to use whatever influence he has to try and help get stop out to the attacks and he has agreed to try. But did suggest his influence wasnāt that great in that sphere. Hopefully he does manage something, small ripples can make big waves over time
You know youāve screwed up if Switzerland stops being neutral
ikr I really hope this works out
sucks that india is taking a neutral stance
but then again its hard to convince otherwise
Ukrainian soldiers can be seen firing several rounds of gun shots in the air and beating up Indian students sitting quietly on the floor.
Video taken by students of Lviv National Medical University, who witnessed it at the Ukraine Poland border. https://t.co/Ez4aoApxgG
when we have shit like this happen to us
and strategically we are more dependent on russia
Yeah that wonāt help. While I donāt condone that, it is a small number Iām sure. You get a minority people like that in many forces unfortunately.
I should add, I sincerely hope the students are ok.
People should remember that the views of a government is by no means the views of all its citizens.
there were also reports of portuguese afro descendents being blocked from passing the Ukrainian border over to ~~ other countries~~ edit: sorry, it was just poland.

just read a report from a german who left ukraine via romania ... basicly all border buerocracy completely removed, if people want to get out of ukraine thats enough for the moment. and very strong support from the civilian population as soon as you are in romania, like people distributing coffee, food, simcards, and holding up signs with drawings of bathtubs / beds ...

The world is a mess. Like I wake-up to read about thousands missing in Pakistan.
even though we're on the other end of europe, here in portugal we have a pretty reasonable ukrainian community, so it's only natural that our doors will be open for any refugees from the war, many family members i'm sure will be coming asap

I still think Putin could be buying time until more troops arrive.
Itās crossed my mind also. Itās just very hard to tell and also not to be suspicious with that guy due to track record unfortunately.
Wait and see.
Well in the past with refugees coming in across the border even Biden wanted to tighten down on it and properly vette them for security.
Idk what Romania is doing. This is an emergency situation
Wait Ukraine is going to/trying to join the EU? Is that good after all this Brexit crap?
the impact of that goes well beyond ukraine. many german wind-power turbines use ka-sat for telemetry and control ... and are currently offline because of it.
I mean if Russia can invade and remain in the UN, what's keeping Ukraine's paperwork held up?
Russia
Brexit was a successful propaganda campaign.
Ukraine have started procedure to join EU.

My understanding is that was a citizenship issue, not a race issue, like some people are baiting/pandering with.
my understanding is they werent checking papers
They honestly self identified as foreigners, not sure what papers would change?
@dawn quartz poland at least was checking papers, but seems to have ... changed procedures by now.
Yeah it's old news essentially, but the racism angle panders to the Russian denazify nonsense a bit
Which is hilarious when the head of Wagner group has SS tattoos on his neck
not sure how poland being crassly xenophobic as usual would support putins storyline there. š
"Nazis, all of them, except us!" is pretty much their stance lol
Here's the Wagner group's namesake:
š¤¦āāļø
Dmitri Utkin
well if theyre not checking papers why would they be denied because of some citizenship issue?
They were giving citizens priority, and if you self identify as a foreigner, you don't get priority
But it's past tense now anyway
ah i see - not sure why they wouldn't identify themselves, if they're portuguese citizens, right?
Of course, point being it wasn't racially motivated as some sources are suggesting
i wonder if they lost/had no portuguese papers, yeah, that's bad
yeah yeah, for sure i agree
Russia's whole stance is "denazifying" the region (while employing that dude with the ss tattoos lol)
BP and Shell have pulled out of that pipeline project now.
Kudos to them.
This is pretty heartbreaking

yeah, its pretty sad
im not well learned on the history of war, but Ukraine having to set up an international legion for people from other countries who want to volunteer to fight is pretty interesting
pootin is so hated that thousands of people from other countries are volunteering to fight against the invasion
can be a bit problematic too. ukraine has been an "adventure travel" destination for actual nazis wanting to play war in the past.
hmm i see
Yeah there is Azov, but I guess at times you can't be too picky about allies lol
i was actualy thinking of cases a few years back, i think it was about fighting in donbass at the time.
Unfortunately. Like our fbi or Cia has been keeping tabs on the proud boys that get official military training in Ukraine and bring it back to the US for rallies and marches
They've basically been making a militia around Texas in the last 4 or 5 years or so. Lisa Ling did a documentary on interviewing militia members a few years ago.
Get well soon
They wouldn't ID themselves probably so they wouldn't get dropped to the back of the 8km line

That said, can we acknowledge the limitations on the strait
Lets say shit goes to hell. Russia would need to take on Turkey to even defend itself from the EU
Because that strait is the only way out of the black sea.
At least for heavy vessels
That also means russian subs may find themselves without safe harbour

for 3days?
It's an 8km+ long line
still wondering about the ground station for that though.
they spoke with multiple officials already
There are almost a million ukrainian nationals entering
one of them didn't even know that portugal was a member of the EU
Im not familiar with the system, but isn't it modular?
I can understand poland setting standards for who can come in as a refugee to the crisis. These people could also go back to their own country by appealing to their own consulate in poland
Not like Portugal doesn't have an embassy in Poland no?
the problem with starlink in its current form is, you need local ground stations. they dont have inter-sat links yet, so the user-terminals in that pic bounce the signal up to a sat, and the sat bounces it back down to a ground station "nearby". as in, both the user and the uplink station need to be within range of the same sat. this can be "some hundred kilometers", but not "thousands".
Being a part of the EU, I thought though one of the benefits was free passage between member states
(thats one of the reasons why "starlink for tonga" after the volcano went pop was ... not the most feasible idea)
(I'm Canadian so my understanding of EU passport system is limited)
Ah ok thanks, that clears it up
well, most probably we do have an embassy in poland, and this is getting traction so eventually these nationals will be in portugal by the end of the week
its also still something i have only heard of on the polish side of things. f.ex. romania the situation sounded more like "let everyone get over the border, under a roof, some dry clothing, and we will figure out the buerocratic details once they had their first sleep in three days".
Looks like Russia is moving military equipment in Belarus toward the Polish border. Probably going to cross into Ukraine to try and sever supply lines before they're established
there is also talk again about belarus troops getting involved in ukraine
Belarus needs to get the exact same treatment as Russia right now
yeah and belarus's military is basically made of all of russias old stuff afaik
belarus really needed to get that treatment as of 10 years ago, but yeah, better now than not.
I mean in terms of sanctions and such.
You know what would really crush the Russian advance in Ukraine
The destruction of Sevastopol.
The absolute obliteration of the entire city.
Give them time to leave. after destroying the port
uh, lets not go there, ok?
Russia has been using Sevastopol as a staging ground for decades.
It's their subhub
currently, it still seems possible there are other options than "global thermonuclear war", really.
apparently EU is going to mirror sanctions applied to Russia and apply them to Belarus
When Maersk is considering no longer shipping to your port, you gotta think twice
That's one of, if not the largest shipping giant on earth
Several shipping lines are involved in intermodal freight transport as part of international trade.
They are Danes, they will try to do the right thing generally
That would be like Walmart saying they won't sell your products.
Hardly
I mean obviously not a direct 1:1
I have lived in both the US and Denmark, you are way off, with all due respect
Wouldn't that be like every major store refusing you?
In canada walmart has destroyed all the small brick and mortar stores.
Walmart has very predatory business practices, but we're veering into ot, apologies.
It's bigbox bullshit everywhere.
It's still a serious topic that's tertiarily linked to trade practices

Interesting.
I saw a video earlier that was showing how to start a tank in case you find one.
Internet is wild in the middle of a war.
i really wouldnt call "drive-by molotoving military convoys from civilian cars" a sane strategy either (in particular try not to set your own car on fire next time!), but its also the kind of thing that really will do a number on troop morale ...
Surprised they let them drive up like that at all.
Seems seasoned soldiers would have shot them before they got that close.
i dont think they are in bad-day-in-kabul every-car-is-an-ied mode ... yet
Also not seeing too much IED stuff, though I suppose they could be stockpiling for those convoys
As an occupying force, you'd think they be more wary of their 6
waiting for creative uses of drones/rccopters for IEDs.
"This is my molotov dropping crane drone"
I would hate to see that
It's hard enough as-is to get a drone legal
Operation of drones here is ...not very straight forward.
Saw a video today where people weren't so lucky. Russian troops opened fire on an approaching car, killing a father in front of his son who was taking the video. The son was also killed later (unconfirmed).

that is pretty wow.
That last sentence has me grinning

a childhood friend had dual de/fi citizenship, and when we reached draft age he did his mil service in finland to keep his fi citizenship. and i got half a year of letters (on paper) largely complaining about the (lack of) temperature of his balls. and that mil service in fi was also credited in de because of some kind of agreement... i dont even think fi was in eu back then.
I don't get what that picture is supposed to say
that smoking is probably not going to have a significant impact on his life expectancy

Kiev is russian spelling of Kyiv right?
Yeah I struggle to see a way he can save face in any way, which may not be good.
Ukranians spell Kyiv i think
nonono. in a very different way. "The Russian central bank has ordered market players to reject foreign clients' bids to sell Russian securities from 0400 GMT on Monday, according to a central bank document seen by Reuters." ... which, from an international point of view, instantly turns the value of these papers to nada/zippo/zero/zilch.
@finite sail i have no idea what transliteration that is at this point. its Kiew in german. i am pretty sure everyone understands which city i meant there. š
Ukrainians spell it ŠŠøŃв
Russians spell it ŠŠøŠµŠ²

Yes but there are people in Russia that could barely afford to eat, a large number, and where will they be with all thisā¦
It would be nice if putin just up and quit, but here's the thing. The legislature in russia changed such that even if the man wasn't in power, he'd have already consolidated it by redistributing power to the different regions, which strips the power of the presidential office
All he'd need to do was lock down loyalty with politicians.
Something he has had no trouble doing
i have moderate confidence in the civilian population there. much more than in the elites.
as in, if anyone there is going to starve within a week, they probably pissed off every single of their neighbours in some way.
Time to make rock soup
I wonder if that's a thing people do
It's a story I know about sharing
Poor families coming together to feed a village
(which is certainly unfortunate for that person, but i will leave that up to everyone direct peers, really...)
Nah I donāt think itās like that. I think itās that they get fucked over by the mega rich and they are shat on from monumentally great heights by a government that spins huge webs of crap and throws them under busses.
I don't know that the megarich are going to be doing so well with no logistics in Russia
If companies like Maersk refuse to ship
This isn't exactly harvest season
but that part has been going on for ... years? decades?
Of course
the sanctions right now are sure drastic and meant to send a message. but in practice, i expect it to be mainly that: a message.
But why does it need to get worse continuously?
The sanctions will result in the ultra poor being so demoralised with life they take theirs or rebel perhaps, the trouble is they donāt see the gains from rebelling maybe because they donāt see how they can make a difference.
This is what makes me feel very sorry for them
i agree ... iff this keeps up for a long time. months. years.
The mega rich, I couldnāt give a fuck about them.. they probably paid for this shit
I mean what sort of a bell end needs a yacht that costs 1m⬠to refuel each timeā¦
War is ugly. There are a lot of not so rich people fully aware of the long term consequences of living like this in russia. As a result protests are faster becoming violent
the mega rich are unhappy about being unable to use their private planes to get to warmer places, and their yachts being scuttled by disgruntled ukrainian staff (that was a case in spain today), and they will off putin. if that works, the impact on the "masses" will be ... a brief inconvenience.
There have been so many arrests in russia that Human Rights Watch have taken notice
Between February 24 and February 28, according to figures collected by OVD-Info, an independent human rights project working to protect freedom of assembly in Russia, authorities arbitrarily detained at least 5982 anti-war protestors across Russia. On February 27, the Prosecutor General's Office published a warning that any persons determined to be providing financial or any other support to foreign state, foreign or international organizations to the detriment of Russia's security and defense capacity will be prosecuted on ''high treason,ā punishable with up to 20 years' imprisonment.
Iām not sure it is going to be as brief as you suspect but letās see. Iām not saying your wrong or Iām right or anything. Just saying how I see things potentially panning out and sharing the fact that I have lots of sympathy for those who simply want to live a peaceful and happy life and distance themselves from all this but cannot. On both sides
thats one of the things leading to my guesses above. they absolutely know they will be beaten up, gulaged, disappeared. yet they keep coming.
My main sorrows are for those being invaded and killed of course.
What a dumb prosecutor
How did he get that job?
Oh wait...Putin
Empty headed threats about high treason
You know a prosecutor is blowing hot air when they say things like "any other support"
i very much agree on that point. and i also dont know. i am not anything like russian, or know much anything about russian internals. but just seeing the protests in RU makes me keep guessing in that direction. while playing "we're not gonna take it" in the background.
The definition is so broad that it's completely without teeth
They made threats that as they have had their European council membership suspended that they would bring back the death penalty for serious crimesā¦
Donāt be surprised if that starts happening soon enough
its probably happening already? russians gonna russian. but again, they keep protesting.
Russia demands foreign media platforms stop restricting russian state media lol
All foreign media platforms respond: You have no power here
My wife is Slovakian and grew up under communist regimes. Her father was once arrested because her mother took a photograph of a factory to show her local council in Bratislava the fumes and how they were affecting my wife as a child. In the background was the Austrian border and because she had caught that on film her husband was accused of being a spy.
(my pick of "we're not gonna take it" there wasnt random. did you people see the dee snider comment on it?)
Like anyone would care about Austria
Russians always looking for spies
I wonder if they're still running numbers stations
i certainly can not recommend getting austrian expat politicians
Paranoid people will always find fault in places there are none because they cannot relax
A numbers station is a shortwave radio station characterized by broadcasts of formatted numbers, which are believed to be addressed to intelligence officers operating in foreign countries. Most identified stations use speech synthesis to vocalize numbers, although digital modes such as phase-shift keying and frequency-shift keying, as well as Mo...
hehehe. seen the recent jamming/disruption of uvb-76? š
No but that would be amusing
it is, and it started weeks ago.
Oops. You can't broadcast on your numbers station?
I find it silly someone would still be using numbers stations. They're all monitored.
Even if they aren't decrypted right away, that doesn't mean that their use won't result in future consequences.
Even if those consequences are never published as they appear
the whole point of a properly run numbers station is you can not decrypt it at all.
the "taken over" part is bullshit, its someone just transmitting on the freq. https://twitter.com/IntelDoge/status/1486152120478879747
This is incredible. Hackers have taken over the Russian buzzer station, UVB-76, and are advertising their Telegram via the waveform. https://t.co/3yrosmvVVf

note the "more than a month ago" timestamp there.
it has been ongoing in the last days.
Wouldn't be able to take over a frequency anyway. Just provide a more powerful transmission on that frequency.
Though maybe thats what they mean
Though it's dumb to flood the frequency with a specific message
If the message is too specific, it can be parsed out
That would be the smart decision
we are really just back at "sending a message" and "we're not gonna take it" there. š
Lmao ok ok Dee we get it
People are asking me why I endorsed the use of "We're Not Gonna Take It" for the Ukrainian people and did not for the anti-maskers. Well, one use is for a righteous battle against oppression; the other is a infantile feet stomping against an inconvenience.

and if you dont know the song ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xmckWVPRaI
I mean TBF itās a good song
Is it tho
its far from my regular playlists, but i get the point. š
Yeah you know you love it even though itās a brain worm
We didn't start the fire. Best song ever. Most appropriate for everything.
It was always burning
That is a good track. I agree. Anyway I fear we digress from topic
Sorry
Give it a couple years. We'll have a song for these times soon.
we sortof do, but otoh, the context was random every russians figuring out how many middle fingers they have, and then its on-topic.
Context was random every russians figuring out how ma...wot?

Remember the video I mentioned the other day about the guy stopping next to the Russian soldiers in their tank and asking if they wanted towed back to Russia. Did you see that one?
A Ukrainian citizen confronted Russian soldiers after their armoured vehicle broke down on a country road in the Sumy region, close to the border with Russia.
Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube āŗ http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub
After spotting the hapless soldiers, the driver pulled alongside them, and asked: 'Can I tow you back to Russia?' Fu...
LMAO, love that
This seems to be common. So many didnāt know where they were headed and for what
Tow a tank in a lada?
I don't think a lada can tow a tank
We had a tiny Lada in DK, but it seemed like it weighed double what it ought to lol
Maybe it just handled that way
we had a lada as a temp replacement for a subaru 4x4 in repair, and oh god, yes, beast. well. BEAST. because thing is huge.
Ladas are smelly
Yeah they are like cast iron or some shit haha
Jiguls too
Imagine electric lada
Even where I grew up in Scotland on the farms there were a few guys with Ladas because they ran and were cheap
Isn't there one already?
No idea
Trying to find liveua
We are down(almost completely), soon will be back

If you scroll down on that tweet⦠the image of Stalin at the door and Putin playing the computer nearly made me spit my drink out. I wonāt repost so as not to violate the channel rules but take a look
Itās on the comment from Daz B
Ya know...Zelinsky may inspire future American politicians. I've heard a lot of pretty poignant arguments coming out of comedians
I mean in the US
They are largely against politics though, being fully aware of how much of a game it is
I have said it to my wife several times. Heās a fucking better leader than the majority of those that have been in power worldwide over the past 50 years
Putin looks like Chevy chase
I mean considering his background, heās a true leader and risen to it like he was doing it his whole life
Poor Chevy lol
Chevy may do the movie
Anyway, weird thought. Was thinking about future biographies
#BREAKING: International Criminal Court prosecutor @KarimKhanQC to open probe into possible war crimes or crimes against humanity in Ukraine

for sure
certainly. but its also more of a "we're not gonna take it" thing. a message.
Iām starting to think aion is really Dee Snider
I'd rather see a "So-and-so russian commander arrested on a warrant from interpol for war crimes during invasion of Ukraine"
what gave it away? the haircut?
I don't think Dee snider would be subtle about anything
I was going to ask "Is that Twisted Sister?", then I looked at "Music Groups"
I have the Twisted Sister music album
It's ....
I mean Christmas album
sorry, i know everyone understood, im just trying to educate myself as i dont know too much about Ukraine. figured youd have a better perspective than i do as i sit in the US. i read an article that said that Ukranians spell it Kyiv and want ppl to spell it that way. didnt know Kiev was also the german spelling. researching now i found this wiki article about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KyivNotKiev
KyivNotKiev is an online campaign started by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) together with the 15 member centre for strategic communications "StratCom Ukraine" on 2 October 2018. Its goal is to persuade English-language media and organisations to exclusively use Kyiv (derived from the Ukrainian language name ŠŠøŃв) instead of Kiev...
Don't they use a Cyrillic alphabet?
Yes
yeah but this is the translation
Then it's not Kyiv or Kiev
Mumbles don't
It's a pointless fight
i used to have a nickname based on something cyrillic ... and ... and ... its complicated. even if you dont go into different languages using cyrillic. š
What is the national food in Ukraine that isn't in Russia?
That is to say, that isn't self identified as
yeah im sure its complicated, i know nothing about the language.
thank you for digging it up, i will try to adjust to kyiv (just as i did from kiew to kiev), but no promises on getting it right from the start or all the time.
youre welcome and no pressure, mostly curious
I'm trying to put pressure on the Canadian PM to drop Canadian imports of Russian oil.
I suspect I'm not alone.
tru tho
They did that already
It's driving up the cost of oil
Oh hah
Good!
what about refined tho
Confused. Is that even an issue?
They probably do that locally
Or are you just taking the piss š
We go through a giant tanker of crude per week on Oahu.
Crazy stuff.
piss
wait no, refined exports is totally a thing
in 2012 Russia exported 70.6 Billion
I get its a thing but I doubt its an issue
USD
Not exactly the money making corner cutting I can see someone exploiting to get around import restrictions
Though Canada for over a decade used to import parts from China, and to get around laws about "made in Canada" labels, companies would assemble Chinese products in Canada
Gave the impression products were Canadian, that were actually only assembled in Canada
Ultimately a failing venture as Canadian inspection standards caught up to the poor quality - resulting in so many products failing inspection flatout, companies would just move inspection to China
Used to work for a company as a QA inspector. Chinese products were nice looking hot shit.
Looked nice, but didn't have the muster
broke easily
yeah not necessarily china but, anyway this is off the topic
It's a serious topic. Is this channel exclusively for talking about Russia and Ukraine?
Foreigners willing to defend Ukraine and world order as part of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries. Together we defeated Hitler, and we will defeat Putin, too.

no prob homie
I think that was in the news earlier today with a list of instructions how to join
I can't see that going over well for prevention of any escalation
I imagine if you volunteer, they require you to abandon any securities with your own nation
Expect no safety
i posted a more detailed step-by-step howto earlier. š
That's the invasion force
the real question is: are they moving or all out of gas?
Hopefully the latter, and sooner rather than later.
Sounds like Ukrainian pilots are starting to get the first of the promised fighters now
I bet Russia isn't happy about the US spying on and reporting their entire front line
Maxar is a US satellite company
europe as well. there is an official order for european sat/sig intel to be turned over to UA in bulk.
that was meant to go in #off-topic-bond-james-bond
Well Russia can go and cry about it
the part that has me worried (in particular with elons starlink angle) is ... russian orbit broom
You think Russia would try and take satellites out of orbit?
If they did that could be seen as an act of aggression
they actualy demonstrated targets ASAT capability a while back. but "orbit broom" is an older, much lower-tech concept with much more devastating overall effect. you dont need targeted ASAT tech. you really just need an orbital launch capability, and launch a bag of gravel into an orbit retrograde from what you want gone.
But again
Could be seen as an act of aggression
Yāknow
Taking out satellites would be on par with attacking a countries military or infrastructure
Depending on who owns the satellite
i have seen a news item or three that could be interpreted as ... an act of aggression.
Fair point
But none that iāve seen have been to the point of an actual attack
Which taking out satellites kinda is
Or would be
How to clean the junk out of the atmosphere. Get russia to shoot it down.
By releasing even more junk?
Honestly better if we keep the junk as relatively intact satellites rather than releasing gravel to destroy it or blowing it into a million pieces
And yea me neither
Imagine being an intelligent person in Russia right now. Guaranteed they're not asking "Are we the baddies?"
It would be enough for a smart Russian to say fuck this and denounce the country
War support is very low in Russia
So obviously a lot of people have already done just that lol
Russian sympathizers in canada now are trashing the homes and vehicles of people with ukrainian flags
After analyzing the situation quite a bit I still have yet to find a reason that might make you want to sympathize with Russia
Anger
They likely don't feel anything for russias situation so much as they may have dead relatives that they loved who died fighting in ukraine
Anger is blinding
I suppose
Speculation of course. They could just be sleeper cells for all I know.
Stir shit up to give the notion russia can touch anyone anywhere
@quiet oyster
Alright
I love edgelords
Itās the same guys attacker native fishermen, and supporting the trucker convoy
While blasting godsmack in their F150ās
I donāt get people
Because Canadaās far right-wing population (notice I didnāt say conservative here because theyāre fully different things) is such a minority, now that they have any voice at all theyāve been extremely violent
Itās the anger people make fun of when they wanna be ironically edgy
But itās like, fully genuine
Like raging against the machine in a 60,000 dollar truck, speeding away from a 100k job
Most people Iāve met that āstand with Putinā were already pro Putin to begin with because they like āstrong anti-leftist leadersā
And all of them managed to make this about Trudeau somehow
Politics class sucks
I hate my major lol
Of course. Didn't you know, Trudeau is <insert> <insert> <insert>?
I hate the game of politics
I swear, that fuck Trudeau crowd will manage to make anything and everything about him
Donāt like Doug Ford? Itās Trudeauās fault
Somehow
If you do like Doug Ford....Trudeau's fault...
Despite them being in fully opposite political parties, and pre-pandemic Doug Ford was a far-right āheroā
Removing gays from sex ed
And rolling back the education budget
And rolling back emissions standards and carbon taxes, and all that stuff
Rolling back education funding is hands down the dumbest thing to do in this day and age.
