Woot
spider-man dies in rings of power
So basically I just kind of want to get people's opinion on what they think of rings of power cuz I watch the first few episodes and I thought it was pretty good. But a lot of people apparently are all pissy saying the show is like woke and I don't understand how I mean personally I liked it. It's a definitely a different take on Lord of the rings
i enjoyed it, doesn’t live up to the movies tho
if it was it’s own show/universe people would love it
No, it doesn't live up to the movie but it's like I was mentioning to me. It seems like a different take on it. You know before the rings were actually forged so I think it's I think it's pretty good and I feel like it's going to be a good story

To be fair, I've only watched episode 1 and 2 and I think episode 3 and 4 are out or whatever but I only watched the first couple that came out
I still want to know who the dang meteor man is
Maybe he turns out to be radicass the brown
Super annoyed about the "woke" narrative in so many production reviews. They did the same shit with The Sandman. Imagine that. The Sandman, of all things. Kind of almost ironic given the premise of The Sandman.
def gandalf
Radigast
looks just like him
Sorry I was respelling what voice to text spelled
Well and that's what I don't get red what's so woke about the damn show I don't understand it. And besides if being woke is being with the times and ever-changing you know social norms then I'll always be woke
Is it because of the African American actor playing an elf?
At least I believe they're African American. I hope I not being offensive by assuming that
He's Puerto Rican
But yeah, right now everyone's up in arms about characters from old franchises no longer being primarily represented by old white male characters. Same shit with the new Game of Thrones on HBO. Racists and misogynists are always gonna try to poop on everyone's party cuz their narrative is no longer fully supported by modern day television or films.
Jesus fucking phrase whatever The guy seems to be doing a pretty damn good role so far, at least from what I've seen of them

i like his character, gliadriel or whatever idk tho
Some folks are apparently not race color blind and they show their true colors in their perspectives and in turn online reviews.
Yeah he seems very steadfast and stoic?
I mean, it's a fantasy. not a historical documentary.can't imagine it's not just white people in it? maybe someone's imagination has a little problem then
anyways I did watch the first two and while I love the look and feel, the pacing seems quite slow, jury's still out
ik it’s for character arcs or smth but i just don’t like her attitude
Man I just said thank you to my assistant device by the alphabet company and it said you're welcome lol
lol
as to galadriel, this is a chance to see her before she was wise and experienced, to see what shaped her
I had to double check to think that I used stoic correctly so I asked it. And yeah it gave me a response and I told it. Thank you!
which to me is more interesting than a character once they have reached their destination
That is true. I really like how they're portraying Galadriel so far, especially since like in Lord of the rings she's kind of seemed as a little bit mysterious in a way and I don't want to say conniving but I'm not really sure the right way to say it. And then in The Hobbit she's portrayed. As you know a fighter you know in the scene where they're in. I think it's or whatever the abandoned castle.
At least that's my opinion and it just it feels cool to get the backstory of how she became a badass
in lotr she wields one of the Three, she is a guardian, is entrusted by the Great Powers (so to speak) with this responsibility, she isn't going to evolve or change, just play that role
so origin story for galadriel? yes please
did you guys continue watching the series?
so annoyed, i wrote a whole paragraph explaining my take on it and i accidentally closed the window and lost what i wrote lol i'll try writing it up again later. smh.
I saw up through episode 5. somewhat aggravated with the dialogue which is often "I can fill in the rest of what this character is going to say ahead of time". Pacing remains a problem. I reaize the first season can be hit or miss with many series so willing to cut them a lot of slack. But not indefinitely
Although I'm not all caught up yet (ngl I feel the story's been dragging a bit for me), my rating for the series right now is max 6/10.
Galadriel annoys me quite a bit. And I don't believe it's the actor's fault. I'm assuming it's how she's being portrayed via script and direction. I saw some reviews commenting on how the character doesn't sit well with them either. She definitely feels too immature...carrying a level of ignorant arrogance one could only believe or understand from a MUCH younger character -- not one that's lived as long as she has, and having been through her struggles.
yuuup
gotta say, the pacing sure picked up in episode 6. still not sold in terms of character development but willing to wait and see
i appreciate the update. i'm trying to get caught up but i'm really struggling. the script isn't convincing me. i'm not sure if the direction carries greatest responsibility with the unconvincing depiction of a number of characters, or if casting was also weak. i'm still not sold with Galadriel. sigh. my rating's dropped to a 5/10
I get that we are basically seeing Galadriel's origin story, so we should expect her to be sort of all over the map in terms of choices and consequences. But it would be nice to have a cohesive narrative, and that's not been established for me yet. I don't mean "oh, it's almost there" but rather "hmm right now this is thoroughly mediocre". But, again, first season can often be really hit or miss, willing to see what happens
Man it pisses me off. Well I guess pisses off as the wrong word. It just kind of annoys me One of the streamers I watch. He was mentioning that he watched rings of power and whole bunch of people in twitch chats like oh the show's to woke and blah blah and you know I think it's stupid. You know the same people I complain about. It being woke are the same people that would be upset that a black person's president
I really don't understand what's woke about the show and I haven't seen any of the new episodes other than I think episode 4
@rich crypt if you wanna share spoilers here of any kind
(even if we started it by discussing a specific series)
Oki, ty for the ping, Discord mobile wasn't letting me view the other threads attached to off topic
I wish Discord made threads a little easier to navigate
I'll say, I went hunting for this one and had to resort to searching for some word I knew had been used in here
So I don't know what episode of rings of power I'm on but I seen the volcano erupt and I'm wondering if they're getting close to the Balrog
The Balrog is under the Misty Mountains, a completely different area
in the last episode of the season we get some questions answered (I won't discuss the specifics here, many people may not have seen episode 8 yet). one of them seemed clear to me all along, the other I didn't guess but makes sense. still some ham-fisted dialogue, and they're going to have to do better about character development if they want to keep me. you can't keep a series afloat on fan service and visuals alone. but the story is no longer dragging its feet as to the pace, so there's that.
I dislike that one of the reveals doesn't follow lore, but I can get over it.
heh I had that same... I mean I'm like "but they don't show up until.... oh well whatever." 😄
like of the things that are big negatives that need to be fixed, that's low on the list in comparison
and honestly, stories being reshaped is ok in storytelling as long as the substance remains the same
No, I know it's under the Misty mountains but like I seen partial spoilers of the balrog being in the same episode of the volcano erupting sorry I worded it poorly

Reopening Spoilers thread for any spoiler discussion, but especially HBO's The Last of Us
Yooo
woohoo
omg --- now all of Hawkeye is ruined..
I am glad that TLOU has started off with such rave reviews, it gives me confidence something DRASTICALLY surprising would have to occur, to prevent us getting into later plot
I really liked the first game, but what cemented my love of the franchise was actually the roller coaster of the sequel.
I'll paste what I was talking about with someone earlier:
TLOU 2 - Abby's arc
They brought me to pure hatred of her throughout the title, then to pure pity and empathy for her strife.
To enable the player to actually go from hatred, to pity, to caring for someone who has taken someone from you, (assuming your emotionally invested on both sides of the story telling) ---- is truly impressive redemption
And in the meanwhile at the same time they were doing the opposite with me for ellie
And by the end they got me, emotionally - where I assume they wanted me
that mindset of -"why are we even here -- if we don't stop this ... who will"
That's awesome! It's refreshing to see that level of character development in a video game. I'm now getting acquainted with the franchise, and I'm so impressed with Neil's process with these stories and characters. It's also been super exciting getting to hear him discuss his work on the series with Craig (Chernobyl) as he also talks about the small differences between the show and the game. He explains the hows and whys. How he only agrees to deviations that add to the original story in a meaningful* way. They're both super meticulous and seem to have an awesome dynamic working together.

More insight into Episode 3 and story's deviations from game, which Druckmann also touches on in the podcast... https://kotaku.com/last-us-hbo-show-bill-frank-neil-druckman-craig-mazin-1850048289
“Are we better in this version of the story, in this other medium, or are we worse?” he said. “If we’re better, we should embrace it fully. And this was such a beautiful story. It was very easy for me to say, ‘Let’s do it. Sounds amazing.’”
I'm most of the way through the first episode of the podcast this is now mandatory listening.
Looks like within the last couple hours Elon even made a positive comment about the show. Generally people that blindly defend and follow him have a political idealogy that is railing against the show for episode 3's content... so it's gonna be interesting.
(speaking in generality - I know everyone is an individual though)
Yessss!!!

Nick talks about his widely loved episode of “The Last of Us,” TikTok reactions to the episode, Jeff Bezos tweeting about his performance, how he would do in a post-apocalyptic world, working with Murray Bartlett, singing “Long, Long Time” by Linda Ronstadt in the episode, doing three comedy tours, going around to various college campuses, and p...
Btw, you should check this one out, so funny @coarse rapids
@runic oxide
Oh we know you didn't. Just in case you wanna discuss here, since episode, well, series is so good
The humanization of the opposition has always been what makes me love this franchise
Wait, which one's Bryan?
The kid that got paralyzed by Ellie and then stabbed in the heart by joel @snow urchin
Ellie shot him when he was choking joel during eps 4
Also, TLOU eps 3 almost had me bawling. Almost needed to stop the episode to cry lol. It doesnt help im a huge fan of Nick Offerman. Felt a little strange seeing him in a gay role, but i soon got over it. And by the end, i was crying
He's so talented. Apparently his background is theatrical performance (per an interview of him I saw recently). Started doing standup after Parks & Rec.
Must've been this interview actually
Highly recommend

Little girl who played the clicker. So badass
https://twitter.com/NaughtyNDC/status/1624438173412601857
Also, some background on the bloater and other clickers
Adam Basil, a 6’6” U.K. stuntman who worked on “Game of Thrones” with Gower, had the perfect “build, girth and fitness” for the bloater.
...
Gower estimates the entire bloater suit weighed 40 kilograms or more, roughly 88 pounds
...
It took a team of 65 prosthetic artists five hours to finish all the makeup. Since the clicker attack takes place at night, the makeup process would start around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. to begin shooting at 9:00 p.m.
https://variety.com/2023/artisans/features/the-last-of-us-bloater-makeup-1235518138/amp/
that bloater thing was really cool, great scene
The bloater in EPS 5 looked fantastic
The Mandalorian Season 3!!!
Is it amazeballs?
It's a pretty good start, nothing too wild but it was good
I'm super excited to watch it when I get Disney+ again.
I like to wait till a large chunk's come out before I resub.
When they get to ||Mandalore|| is when i imagine it will go nuts.
Makes sense
Can't wait, lol
I just realised
Pedro's basically playing two "dad" roles right now, lol
Lol das true. he makes a perfect dad
damnit, they made David in TLoU really ||dark and rapey at the end||

thank you, Super. i'm excited. i'm glad you enjoyed it
Oh my goodness I’m so mad at ||Joel for lying!!! Ugh!!!|| and no I did not play the game, I’m gonna once it comes out on steam tho, I wanna see how it compares to the show
||I get that he killed a bunch of people and Ellie would probably blame herself for that and it’d be a total drama fest but still!! Come on Joel!!! Do we not know better yet???||
same! re: game on Steam. i haven't played it. and holy hell, Joel lying
that's gonna come back to haunt him, right? it's gotta
Oh it’s for sure gonna
exaaaactly. i mean, he could've come up with a more creative way to skirt around the truth. but yeah, the whole, || i swear || bit. oof!

Yeah goodness she clearly knows something’s off don’t do that to her
especially cuz mannnn, breaking the trust of the person you love the most is risking it all even worse than having just told her the truth i think
Yeah the longer he lies about this the worse it’s gonna be when she finds out
oh my god that david episode was so good
and i caught troy baker i think his name is in that episode
(he voice acted joel in the video game, also the one that got ||smacked right in the neck with that butchers knife||)
Yessss
That was him
He talks about it in the behind the scenes bit that plays after the credits
Dope, I’m not gonna lie I watch it on a website
He also runs the podcast they do with the two directors, Mazin and Neil
So I don’t see that but I listen to their podcast when I can
And yeah, that was wild
||GIRAAFFFEEEEEE|| ep9
You guys are gonna have a blast playing it if you do.
Definitely one of my favorite Story games
It’s very close, I’ll just say that
With a bit more added into the show actually.
i'm looking forward to it!
now, did they use real giraffe?
oh yes, yes they did
I have fed a giraffe before, it has been so long though lol
i was licked by a real giraffe at my local zoo a few times
he would peak over the fence and play with people passing by
unfortunately they later fenced most of it off and added a little area where you can pay to feed them
Ellie from the game played as ||Ellies mom|| in the show
I don’t know how I didn’t catch that
Just troy
I love grogu lol
Most recent Mando epsiode is pretty good
They brought Jar Jar Binks’ actor back for another role in SW.
||As a Jedi||, which is pretty cool.
||was he the main jedi in that flashback?||
||yes, yes he was||
||huh, never would have realized that, cool that they brought him back||
OH YES
The Mandalorian brought back another actor for Star Wars, though not from so long ago
Really cool
From Star Wars Rebels.
Even if it was for a quick second, that was neat.
Just to know that he’s somewhere existing rn.
