it's only linear for two milestones in each phase: the anchor point, and the memory one. otherwise you can do each milestone free-form like most expeditions

the memory milestones need the anchor planets to work, is all. that's the only reliance on a specific place i saw

hm. as i've said a lot, selling the grey modules you get given from milestones is a good way to earn enough nanites to buy good quality modules!
don't be afraid of taking it slow to avoid dying. for missions that require you to be in danger, like getting storm crystals, try to find a hot world to make use of the extra jetpack time in storms.
the game wants you to tame a hostile creature. the two-legged ones on the starting world are a good bet, get that instantly.
