You need to place a base computer first if not already, but also, you cdon't need the refiner. Look for some cracked mud type terrain, it contains small rocks that contain chromatic metal.

I'd say that was about the same for me, I did get SUPER lucky at one point where you have to farm enough corvette parts to find/trade for a specific on from the vender. I found enough high value items quickly, That part could take a lot of time if you are unlucky.

Small caveat, once you have finished all the required milestones you can send items back to your primary save by putting items in the terminal then switching to your primary save. You can do this multiple times before you fully end the expedition, in case you have lots of junk to send over.
