Both times I've used one so far it sends me to a nearby system, but have been in space when used

If anyone is having issues using the Echo to find the abandoned base that gets you a Multi-Tool and Sentinel Ship location try the following, it worked for me after six attempts.

Restart the game fully, verify game if on Steam, then when you use the Echo make sure it's on a habitable Corrupted Sentinel Planet.
My first five attempts unironically were all on dead and exotic planets and for whatever reason the Echo wouldn't work on them but did work on planets that had NPCs, animals, ect

1. Kill sentie freighter, get the item.
2. Summon your freighter, land and create a manual save.
3. Get onboard your ship, use the item, get to the crash site.
4. DO NOT get out of the ship, hover above and check ceptor's design/colour via photomode.
   5a. Land, repair, well get your ceptor.
   5b. Reload the save, warp your freighter 500-600 l.y. away, repeat p.3

Since, obviously, if you just hopped in, the ship would just kill you. Being part of a hivemind, and all.

But it is extremely lucrative as a moneymaker. Arguably competitive with smuggling, because you're making around 50m units per interceptor you salvage.

Kill the little corrupted sentinel drills or kill the largest corrupted sentinels and there's a off-chance they'll drop a little Echo item that looks like the Warp Anomaly Beacon you get from destroying asteroids.
Then go to a fresh Corrupted Sentinel planet and pop it, preferably on a "living" planet and it'll take you to a abandon camp, that'll start you on the quest.
