For example, I split them all into 2000ish stacks and put them into my medium and large refiners in my base and ship so I can get about 40k per 12 mins (thereabouts)

It can be done with one refiner, but 20k per 12 mins, will not happen unless you put the tainted metal into at least 5 refiners

@versed venture you need to hatch the egg first by getting the stuff. It's like a week's time for it to hatch unless you do the time thing on your system. You won't get living ships to spawn until you get your first one by completing the quest.

With the starbirth mission there are several things you have to do for the egg to be ready to hatch. Once it's ready to hatch you it will give you some weird pattern. The hunter, the reflection and so on. At the end of the mission on hovering over the egg it will say Euclid 3 times. Those are coords you need to put into a portal while in the Euclid galaxy and it will continue the mission after you pulse drive in that system.

You will have to have done the missions to make the consciousness bridge, pulsating core, impossible membrane, and the seeds of glass for that part of the mission to show up. Once you hatch your first egg on a save you no longer have to do the whole mission to get another one. You just acquire a void egg and pulse while in a living ship ( other ships have a chance to spawn other things like traders.)

@fast path no. Where you get the egg doesn't matter. I have 200+ still and I've been giving them away to people who want them. It depends on what planet it tells you to go to. There are over 300+ different combinations to the living ships.

@timid pulsar you only are suppose to have 1 on you at a time. More than 1 will bug it out and prevent you from getting a living ship. Any more than 1 you need to put in your freighter storage container. Not your freighter

If you have any combination of more than 1 on you ( 1 on you, 1 on your starship or freighter or 2) the mission bugs.

That's why I tell people to only have one on them. Put the rest in your freighter storage container.

If that doesn't work..... you will have to restart the whole mission over again unless you have a manual save from before the egg was given to you. That will also fix the mission as well. But you will lose progress aka all the time since your manual save.
