These companies talking about blockchain economies realize that underlying idea and features of blockchains means that there is no centralized broker right? That they would not be able to monopolize transaction fees. If they just want to have a market for game items they just need to build something like the steam marketplace or... diablo 3 real money auction house. Real money game economies aren’t some kind of impossible to implement technologies that NFTs can solve. They are just things that most consumers are wary of and haven’t been popular. I guess the idea that an NFT could have value beyond it’s original issuer could make consumers less wary, but the hope that some one else will make something that preserves the value of an item from the originating product is dubious. The value of an NFT is most likely to crash if its original use is obsolete. No one is obligated to back it up with alternate use. Besides as pokemon home shows. Game items can already be made to work across multiple games with existing means. Any reason a consumer would have no faith in in game items is because publishers have chosen to obsolete your items by not providing systems to moving your loot from one version to the next annualized release of a micro-transaction game. NFTs could be a way to allow these things... but as soon as publishers realize they can’t resell you the same item every year and charge transaction fees, they will quickly and intentionally trash the value of old items in the next iteration of the game, move back to a market they control and tell the people who believed in their promises tough luck, change of plans.

I suspect it's much worse then that. By establishing the normative features of running blockchain systems even as passive as NFTs with consumer consent, developers can capitalize on their entire consumer base, utilizing their own product to leverage processing power for the purpose of both manufacturing and ultimately mining cryptocurrency in a way that people don't get the option of not agreeing to without opting out of their product entirely. Getting to that stage would take time, but I have no more trust in blockchain promoters than I do Electronic Arts when they started pushing for Loot boxes and online only single player games and subscription based single player games.

Beyond the simple impracticality of maintaining NFT valuation in a video game long term, there are nefarious tools to be gained by pushing this narrative into the metaverse.

this is possibly the long-term gamble, that the companies want to use audiences as miners & straddle the line letting them keep some of the crypto but then get them to fork it over with NFTs, so they can then turn around & cash out the cryptocurrency whenever the valuation is high, essentially just adding another convoluted monetization scheme to the mix

probably try to argue something like it's better for the players since they can use the currency earned on these collectibles, completely BSing people into forgetting they could just do this off-blockchain & have done so to varying degrees
