Corporate mandates tend to be fucked that way. I'm sure on some level they ran the numbers and decided using their inhouse engine should save on costs over licensing other engines, even if they had to rework it for other games, but didn't account for just how damn much reworking it would cost compared to licensing an engine better suited to their devs' aims. .

Its really well made, model is nice animations too, taming is a lot more interactive that you usual vanilla dino, its normally wekaer than a rex but has a defensive mode and a adrenaline mode at low health, has bonus damage to small creatures as well

They later added/adjusted a different mode (storyteller, I think it's called) that drops the roguelike restart from death stuff

Storyteller mode makes it easier to play as a regular open world adventure game, Survival mode (or whatever they call it) is there for a sort of roguelike experience, Eternal Voyage is a sort of roguelike endless mode, where you just keep going after the story ends in chapter 5, Free Sail is like a creative mode where you can experiment with boat builds.
Photo Mode is there to take fun shots of the lovely islands. Oh, and there's New Game+, which I suppose does the usual keep your progress but stuff is harder somehow thing.

Nah, it doesn't work that way for everyone. I started thinking about these feelings while trying to understand exactly how to fill this void, and I ended up creating 2 main categories when it comes to what I look for in games
Progression and Entertainment.
Progression is what keeps me playing until I finish the story, cause everything is still new. It's what keeps me going while I'm discovering new stuff, leveling up, trying to unlock and/or achieve something specific in the game.
But if the game isn't entertaining enough as is, I will only be able to beat it once. Once it's not new anymore, there's no NG+ that'll save it
Entertainment is what keeps me going back to the game everyday after I've already "seen everything". Not because of the story or anything new, but because I enjoy the gameplay, and doing it over and over again feels good by itself.
In the end, I reckon you just gotta find a game that does this for you
Of course, burnout is still a thing, so it's best to have a few of them available to switch when needed
