dry copper
#

That tobii idea seemed compelling, but I'll be honest...The HMD isn't the selling feature that gets me with VR

It's the hands.

The VR hands.

Tobii + Valve Index controllers would be my ideal situation, if it worked together

Development hell is a place where good ideas go to die.

keen dome
#

Yep

winter yew
#

There’s a small team of Russian game devs that were working on a car combat game in the vein of Vigilante 8 / Twisted Metal that’s basically gone silent. The game seemed like a great modern take on car combat but it’s basically dead at this point.

#

I sent an email to the developers of the Tobii eye tracker, hoping to discuss the prospect of a tobii variant that can track hand controller inputs and positioning in the same vein in which they track eye movements.

#

Probably not something possible with the tracker alone.

#

Perhaps some integration with an independent positioning tracker exclusively for the controllers and positioned relative to track them

#

Though I wonder how disorienting it would be to see your real hands moving while the hands of your character move ingame

#

It would present a problem

lavish obsidian
#

yeah external depth sensing cameras would work well - thinking of the constellation tracking that oculus gave up in favor of built in cameras

dry copper
#

Your hands would get in the way of your view of things ingame

lavish obsidian
#

mmm, so two different overlays? what advantage would that have over simply getting position and applying it to a model ingame

#

because quest games with handtracking simply track your hands and make it available through the sdk without options for irl overlay

dry copper
#

Coding wise they could make it so when you look at your hands irl, the camera offsets a bit to view the character hands without lining it directly with your irl hands. That way the game would know that youre looking at your characters hands and not obstruct the gameplay , while still allowing you to look at your irl hands. I mean, technically it's possible to do but not sure it would feel good

lavish obsidian
#

yeah i'm sure a passthrough+ adjacent could do that, but not sure what benefits that would bring

dry copper
#

Imagine looking at your irl hands and your char looks at theirs, but then you raise your hand up to block your irl view of the game screen and it moves the orientation of the hand to face view so that in order to properly see your hand, now you have to move it out of obstructing your view

#

meh, the more I think about it, the less enjoyable it sound

lavish obsidian
#

yeah the largest issue we have with vr handtracking is.. mostly with haptics. there isn't any feedback for gripping objects or anything like that, so the universal interact action is just denoted to pinching

dry copper
#

Though I suppose you could have more sensitive hand controls that respond more exagerated to hand movements.

#

Then you could look at your irl hands and never necessarily obstruct your char view

What a hot steaming pile of bullshit. After all the complaints Ubisoft got for language barriers playing the Division, The Division 2 has the EXACT same issues, with foreigners flooding the game on every region and the game being full of Russians and Chinese

I am SO glad I never purchased the DLC.

#

Now it looks like someone fond of the original had mental diarrhea.

bronze wind
#

tried Monster Sanctuary on gamepass, actually very fun

winter yew
#

I thought about checking that one out

bronze wind
#

would definitely recommend

#

it's basically pokemon with a bit more strategy and metroidvania-ish aspects

#

every monster has a "field move" that does something outside of battle, letting you do stuff like make small platforms, glide for a bit, burn things, break things, push things, etc

winter yew
#

Oooh

bronze wind
#

you have three battle slots and the monsters always act in order of position, so positioning plays a big role in how the battle plays out. Putting buffers up front to add damage/build up combos and leaving heavy hitters in the back to deal more damage as a result

#

also every monster has a skill tree with mutliple branching paths

#

so you can have two of the same monster with different focuses potentially

Aparently Odyssey could have been a standalone game... but they didnt do that cash grab, they made it a season update instead! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgwhlgzvI5M

Elite Dangerous Odyssey was featured in a recent issue of MCV. The article contained a lot of information we’ve heard previously…however there were a few new bits and pieces, which I will look at here. So, aside from the ability to walk around, one of the things about Odyssey that has interested me the most is the new planetary tech. Dr Kay R...

I can find the date on that shot and look back through my logs if you want to figure it out

glass plinth
#

I always loved the bizzare worlds of ed

#

The two I love the most are on the far rim in a region you really have to travel awhile to get two. Two naturally life sustaining worlds in the same system, with two moons, one moon sustains life.

#

If the game had alien races like the original ED did, I imagine that would be some home world lol

Found a couple of waters orbiting each other but never Earth likes

glass plinth

Yeah the earth likes I found are still listed as some first, I forget what

#

I know it was probably just a first for the region

#

Definitely would make a ideal home for humans

#

one worlds basically earth level biological with near earth atmosphere and temps

#

I say near earth, because its a tad warmer

#

the others more polar-temperate

sleek cloud

Feels good being the first to discover it and can't wait to hand in the exploration data

dry copper
#

I hope that ED's odyssey is so much better than I expect it to be. What are the odds? Do we have any early releases of beta tests or something

#

Maybe some gameplay?

sleek cloud
#

I think there is will be to a select few

austere lance
#

They've shown some gameplay already

sleek cloud
#

These series of videos cover it

glass plinth
#

Honestly, with anything done by frontier for ED, its always take the bare minimum expectations

#

and your pretty close to how it will be

dry copper
#

I wonder if Odyssey will be forced pvp

glass plinth
#

No

#

Definitely not

dry copper
#

So there will be NPC to shoot and respond to?

#

On ground

glass plinth
#

Yes

#

In theory you could say start out at the started space station

#

fly to any world you can walk on

#

and engage in solo merc work

dry copper
#

You can't walk on all worlds?

glass plinth
#

Not all

#

Atmospherics clearly not

#

Anything thin or no yes

#

So what does ed offer, go to planet, kill people in bases

#

Scavenge crashed ships

#

find plants and sell the data scans

#

Thats about the core

#

Essentially it just adds stuff to do on the planets you can walk on, not to to much

dry copper
#

Eventually it will be just another glory hole for microtransactions

glass plinth
#

Well in function its just like mining in space, scanning in space

#

Just a new area to do it

#

Its not bad

#

Also you could in theory just work on planets

#

since you dont need ships to fly between planets now

#

Space taxis

#

It is nice though since I live in one system most of the time

#

Mine there

#

work there

#

Now I can go to planets and explore them for a profit in a new way, it makes the planets feel a bit less barren

arctic sparrow
#

well, here's hoping they won't just have announcements for more announcements

dry copper
#

I can't wait to see what happens with game development integration between AI and story

#

I'd love to see a game that writes a dynamic story in 3D using an AI that impacts content

#

Then you can literally type to a NPC and they can respond and change the game fundamentally

#

A conversation with AI I had today....

Have you played the game Cyberpunk 2077?
No I haven't, I have just seen footage of it.
Do you have any opinions about it?
Id rather be a walrus.
Me too. Me too.

dry copper

AI: Do you mind if I try an experiment?
ME: I do not mind if you try an experiment.
AI: You are not funny.
ME: This is true.
AI: What are you thinking about?
ME: Being unfunny.
AI: You succeeded.
ME: Thank you.
AI: No problem.

winter yew
#

First run took me 81 hours though, I didn't rush it.

dry copper
#

I'm just thinking of all the situations that could arise in a game with an AI you speak to with inputs rather than pre-designed messages

#

Just random text....

#

and the AI can act out based on responses

winter yew
#

I imagine eventually we'll see something similar.

glass plinth
#

Weve seen games like that

#

back in the 90s

dry copper
#

I don't mean muds

#

3D

glass plinth
#

hehe, just saying the tech exists

#

id love it though

dry copper
#

I want a game where the tech manifests in a 3D world and not in the manifestations of a limitless imagined one

#

Hell. The replayability of a game with such an open ended concept...

#

Feels almost endless

#

I imagine there would be limits at least in terms of end-result

#

There's only so many ways an AI can kill off a character....

#

Though, it's possible the AI could bug out and share the results between different NPC meaning a single hive mind might turn into a psychopath with a full on agenda

#

Turns out Agent Smith wasn't a virus...You were. You didn't tip the taxi driver. You were mean to the pizza delivery guy...that shit built up over time...and the AI governing the entire universe started to hate you.

#

ahem Sorry. Fantasizing about game design

dry copper

I wonder if there's still hope after all this time.

#

I mean...Technically it's got a better track record than Cyberpunk

#

So it's got that going for it

#

lol

winter yew
#

The technology in game will definitely lead to new games and scopes of games being born.

dry copper
#

A tech demo

winter yew
#

The render engine is so ridiculously easy in concept that I imagine others will work out their own methods, leading to LoD being a non issue.

sleek cloud

something like that anyway

That City planet would be cool

Anyways, they’re just mobile starports, though best not to log out while docked at one. Some have cartographics.

viral token
#

you don't need to own one, just find one with the UC service active and you can sell your data, although you lose 25% (12.5% to FC and 12.5% to UC service provider) but you can sell data for systems within 20 Ly

heavy zenith
#

I haven’t visited any yet but I haven’t gone very far either

I was heading out to heart and soul but it's obnoxiously far

#

Well selling one system ain't that much

#

Id just like to sell the stuff I acquired 6 months ago or so

viral token

my point is, you normally have to travel >20 Ly in order to sell system data ... not with a FC you don't 😉

full pivot
#

No but that's anathema to what I'm doing

#

I'm taking the slow route to accrue cartographic data

viral token

viral token
#

I was on my way back from Colonia and using the NH and got stuck in a cone and ended up back in Colonia ... when I started the trip home again I didn't use Neutrons at all ... visited more systems though

full pivot
#

Its why I avoided the most recent one

#

It might have let me get to cave faster but no thanks

#

Back when I had my Asp I had 3 months worth of data and got fucked on a supercharge and quit the game for quite a while

#

The problem is I had no intention of going back till I had reached the center, and I had no reason to think id die

crisp sparrow
viral token
#

should have contacted support, a mate of mine had a similar problem been using neutrons for ages then suddenly gets destroyed by one so contacted support and had his rebuy cost refunded and all his data restored, only thing they didn't restore was the system data so if you view the system from the galaxy map it'll say discovered/mapped by you but it'll still show unexplored on all the bodies

full pivot
#

Yeah this was before FSS I think?

#

It was a while ago

#

At least now I know I can hop back to the bubble and stuff

#

As I understand what y'all were saying I could jump back to civilization and then back out to where I left off?

viral token
#

no

full pivot
#

Then its kinda useless

viral token
#

if you die you get the choice of the ship you were in at the last station you were docked at ... or a sidewinder in a system in the bubble (not sure if this is still a thing with the starter systems as you'd require the permit for them, which you lose when you leave them)

full pivot
#

I know how death works

#

I guess I misunderstood the point of FCs then

#

As I said before there's travel distance regardless

viral token
#

A FC is just a mobile station, I took mine and a few people to Colonia to unlock the engineers up there a little while ago ... does 3 jumps per hour so it takes a while to get there

#

Which is weird, since I've never driven a car.

cinder vessel

It may sound stupid, but that phrasing has always thrown me off, "Driving on the [x] side of the road"

Like, you drive on both sides, and either side, you're going forward...

silver sparrow
dry copper
#

@cinder vessel I drive with the traffic.

cinder vessel
#

but the traffic goes either way!

dry copper
#

Try driving on the right side of the road in britain. Traffic will be driving into your face.

#

Two lanes. Relative to your position. Left and Right.

#

Britain drives on the left side, North America drives on the right side.

#

It feels like I'm on the wrong side of the road which sends me careening into traffic

cinder vessel
#

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and I'm saying the phrasing is as confusing to me as that driving situation is to you

dry copper

I just don't prefer to drive backwards.

cinder vessel

dry copper

i don't get some of these maths problems like this. What does solving them accomplish?

I at least somewhat understand solving scientific problems, how they can help solve other problems and/or devise new tech and/or improvements to tech, however general maths problems? Just end up going, so...What?

dry copper
#

I'm really digging this channel

#

@cinder vessel To quote Simons Foundation in summarizing the significance of this discovery

A solution to the Riemann hypothesis — and to newer, related hypotheses that fall under the umbrella of the ‘generalized Riemann hypothesis’ — would prove hundreds of other theorems. In one fell swoop, it would establish that certain algorithms will run in a relatively short amount of time (known as polynomial time) and would explain the distribution of small gaps between prime numbers. In short, a solution would solidify humanity’s understanding of some of the most fundamental objects and relationships in mathematics.

#

The practical application of solving this problem has yet to be found because we have no technology that needs this mathematics to function. The practical application of these problems won't be discovered for hundreds if not thousands of years.

#

That of course depends on how fast our technologies develop.

#

Maybe we'll find a practical use for using this math in formulating technology to unify relativity and quantum mechanics.

#

That's the beauty of mathematics.

#

It's a light switch into nothing but possibility

cinder vessel
#

yeah see that still told me next to nothing

#

mathematics, especially on that level, is a lot like philosophy, just instead of concepts & ideas expressed in language it's a bunch of concepts & ideas expressed in numbers

#

which i suppose for some folks is beautiful, but for me it's just like, what the fuck even is a number really

dry copper
#

Of course....because there are no proofs yet. Once a proof exists it goes from philosophy to psychology.

#

The whole objective is to find a way of applying the math in such a way that it can be used to predict other things without needing to necessarily calculate infinity, which clearly we can't do

#

Lets say for instance you have an algorithm that dictates how your game renders buildings. It would be even nicer if your algorithm could also dictate how the game renders avatars, and light, shadows, etc....The fewer independent mathematics necessary, the less overhead in calculations.

#

I'm using coding as a poor substitute for pure math

#

Application wise, understanding a simplified foundational basis for mathematics just makes everything that uses them more efficient....

And I don't myself understand how the math works. I can appreciate your frustration.

#

As I listen to the complex explanations, my brain picks up on bits and pieces that fit together, but I don't see the whole picture.

cinder vessel
#

Sounds a bunch like sorting out solutions searching for problems to apply to, lol

dry copper
#

Math is way ahead of practicality. Always has been.

#

Because it's not limited to simple utility

cinder vessel
#

ahead of but also sometimes just flatly impractical, lol

Look how far figuring out pi brought us

Even when the og xbox/ps4 came out they could barely hit 1080p, they were never that fast to begin with

Knowing how to calculate circle dimensions and density is huge, and iirc led to trigonometry

dry copper
#

@sariety#3710 Yes, figuring out pi. Pi can be calculated. The fact that it can be calculated, even if it can not as yet be calculated to a common fraction does not diminish the fact that it's figured.

#

and...for the record, it will never be figured to a common fraction. Welcome to the universe of three dimensions.

so, i'm kind of enjoying Rebel Galaxy Outlaw? At least when I can get into dogfights that don't murder me right away.

#

But to get better stuff, you have to do a lot of side stuff, and the side stuff just...Isn't great.

Part of it's that the side missions that might be more interesting seem to inevitably get you ambushed. The others are working with cops, or pirates, both of which screw your rep up one way or the other.

So you end up with bland fetch quests or clearing minefields which are inexplicably strewn about the place.

#

So far, none of these side missions have had any meaningful story associated with them. It's just some filler text that soandso wants whatever done, here's the objective, here's the reward, go at it.

#

I blame Ubisoft for this /s

isn't BDO notoriously slow/grindy as-is? the hell?

i forgot the roguelite side of everspace was bad, help

the progression is slow

and a bunch of other games

i hate progression systems

I keep trying to get back into games that I apparently suppressed the memory of having really bland & annoying progression systems

#

At what point is the satisfaction of "earning" the unlocks not just like some weird sunk cost fallacy thing squinteyes

glass plinth
#

I like slow progressing games

#

probably why I liked bdo

#

Mind you I was running a business making ships

#

I loved the social side of it

#

Not to mention managing my business was rather fun

cinder vessel
#

I like games where I'm not actively put in a screwed position to justify a progression system

#

🦑

cinder vessel
#

The last couple games I've been playing have me feeling that way. Everspace tries to cover it up with being a roguelite, and I dunno what Rebel Galaxy Outlaw's excuse is.

Classic game challenge? 🤷‍♀️ Thing is, I know when I'm facing an enemy on even footing, it's fun. But left & right it tosses up tougher ones or too many and it's blagh

#

Everspace does a similar thing, mainly with enemy count tho

#

lol the squid almost looks like it has a smiley face

charred badge
#

yeah, it's cute

dry copper
#

@charred badge We want to welcome you to....munchkin laaand!

glass plinth
#

Hrmm

#

As far as natural progression I loved Ancestors Humankind. The entire world was always brutal no matter what.

#

Realistically you only survived being more clever then your enemies. Using the terrain and tools available.

#

Overall, I dont have to suspend much belief in areas with inherently more risk though, how games approach it isnt to far from reality, just to artificially used.

#

I suppose I would prefer natural progression, but either way I enjoy most kinds of games

#

I think what irritates me is when people call people out for a design and dont offer any logical means to maintain current game qualities people want, while introducing them to new ones

#

Its very difficult

glass plinth
#

The game does the same thing though

#

Progressive upgrading

cinder vessel
#

I think my frustration point with games & progression systems, at least recent ones, is when they're transplanted in different genres that don't benefit from them and may in fact hurt them

glass plinth
#

Such as?

cinder vessel
#

Everspace is a good example, I think

#

It tosses in this perk system atop classic ship upgrading and sorta bundles them together in a clunky way

charred badge
glass plinth
#

I guess ED does it well

charred badge
#

Oops, I forgot that was up

cinder vessel
#

but also CoD is rife with that crap, lol
Lots of Ubisoft games tack on weird progression systems

glass plinth
#

I mean you start out as a noone

#

Personally I like progression, I like .. ooh shiney

#

Its why I played mario

#

or any game for the last 30 years

cinder vessel
#

There's a difference between repeat boring shit to get thing and hey collect stars tho

charred badge
#

Everspace 2 being permanent rather than roguelite makes some sense. Work on the game controls while players run with minimal content creation

glass plinth
#

Not really

cinder vessel
#

Yes really

glass plinth
#

Since said stars opened up stuff and artifactds and such do as well

charred badge
#

Then make a full game sequel

cinder vessel
#

Imagine if instead of overcoming the obstacles you just sat there farming bowser's minions

charred badge
#

Lol Mario RPG

#

Goddamn Culex

cinder vessel
#

Yeah, there's just a difference between progressing through a platformer and RPG character progression

charred badge
#

Square snuck a FF optional boss into a mario rpg

glass plinth
#

Not to me

#

I mean for me, progression is progression. Which is why I like genshin or say ancestors

#

I dont differentiate

cinder vessel
#

There is to me. In a platformer I'm actively enjoying the moment to moment play. In a RPG I'm tolerating the moment to moment play to get to the interesting places/story progressing moments

#

So then when you say, blend the two, I'm just like whhhyy

#

Legend of Zelda games have sorta strayed into that territory and it kills me

glass plinth
#

Its like say , Im finding treasures because I know there is a known grind to find them all

#

Or defeat all the bosses of a said kind

#

That type of stuff gives me center points to operate around

#

Usually with smaller goals to keep me going which I achieve the big ones

#

Like Zelda as you put it

#

Black Desert was like that to a extent, thogh I found it less restricting

#

Generally if I played well, I could approach most areas with intelligence over brute force

#

Ill admit though, one reason I loved kerbals was, there was no strict goal

#

Just... grow , learn, build

#

No limits except what I could concieve

#

Elite dangerous was a bit like that

#

It honestly thinks your just wired differently Leon. To enjoy your games differently.

#

Which isnt bad. Your just part of a much smaller subtype

#

😄

cinder vessel
glass plinth
#

shrugs

#

Whatever you want to explain it as

#

I think youd probably like some of my more esoteric games though

#

Im huge into organic simulations

#

How do you feel about games like Cities Skylines?

#

Ha, some of my favorite games growing up were Simcity, Simfarm, Simant

#

Basically game toys as wright called them

cinder vessel
#

My main fun with SimCity for awhile was just loading up premade cities and tossing down disasters, lol

glass plinth
#

Hehe

#

Mine was designing cities with really interesting styles

#

Mind you I took a lot of classes for such designs

#

Cities Skylines really took it a step further.

cinder vessel
#

At first I was sorta into them for the citybuilding/design stuff, but I've then lost some interest as it's just tossing down prefabs, and I'd like to design some of the structures to make up the city

Spore almost had that, but it was literally just for that one stage.

glass plinth
#

yeah in simcity 4 I designed buildings for that reason

#

Though if you have capacity to understand how cities really work, there are a lot of systems to interact with
